The Copenhagen case-control study of renal pelvis and ureter cancer: role of smoking and occupational exposures.

Smoking habits and occupational exposures were investigated for 96 patients with cancer of the renal pelvis and ureter (including papilloma) and 294 hospital controls. In comparison with persons who never smoked, significantly increased relative risks were seen for smokers of cigarettes alone (RR = 2.6; 95% CI: 1.0-6.7) and in combination with other types of tobacco (RR = 3.8; 95% CI: 1.3-11.5). Non-significantly increased relative risks were observed for pipe smokers (RR = 2.2; 95% CI: 0.1-97) and for mixed pipe, cigar, and cigarillo smokers (RR = 6.5; 95% CI: 0.4-21.2). A strong dose-effect

Alternative tobacco product use and smoking cessation among homeless youth in los angeles county.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 70% of homeless youth smoke cigarettes, but their use of alternative tobacco products (ATPs) is unknown. This paper reports on ATP use among past-month smokers in Los Angeles County, including whether it differs by demographic characteristics, homelessness severity, past-year quit attempts, and readiness to quit smoking. Given the growing popularity of e-cigarettes, we also report on perceptions of harm and reasons for using this product. METHODS: We surveyed 292 unaccompanied homeless youth who were randomly sampled from street sites. Participants had smoked at le

Little Cigars are More Toxic than Cigarettes and Uniquely Change the Airway Gene and Protein Expression.

Little cigars (LCs) are regulated differently than cigarettes, allowing them to be potentially targeted at youth/young adults. We exposed human bronchial epithelial cultures (HBECs) to air or whole tobacco smoke from cigarettes vs. LCs. Chronic smoke exposure increased the number of dead cells, lactate dehydrogenase release, and interleukin-8 (IL-8) secretion and decreased apical cilia, cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein levels, and transepithelial resistance. These adverse effects were significantly greater in LC-exposed HBECs than cigarette exposed cultures. L

The survival of treated hypertensive patients and their causes of death: a report from the DHSS hypertensive care computing project (DHCCP).

A prospective study has been carried out to determine the causes of death and risk factors for survival in 4994 patients referred with a diagnosis of hypertension to hospital specialist clinics and 457 patients treated by their general practitioners for this condition. At the time of entering the prospective study, 69% of the patients were already being treated for hypertension. Four hundred and eleven patients have died, and their causes of death and death rates have been compared with the rates for the population of England and Wales. Ischaemic heart disease accounted for over one-third of t

Life style and occupational risk factors for bladder cancer in Germany. A case-control study.

A hospital-based, case-control study of 531 male and 144 female matched pairs was conducted in Germany to analyze the role of nonoccupational and occupational risk factors in the etiology of tumors of the lower urinary tract (bladder cancer). Smoking of cigarettes was associated with an odds ratio (OR) of 3.6 for men and 3.2 for women, compared with not smoking and showed a significant dose- and time-response relationship for both sexes. Heavy pipe smoking significantly increased the risk (OR = 1.9 in men), and smoking of cigars did not alter the risk of bladder cancer. Controlling for smoking

Current Tobacco Product Use and Cessation Behaviors Among People Who Use Opioids: Implications for Integrated Harm Reduction Services.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use, particularly cigarette smoking, is disproportionately high among people who use opioids (PWUO). Although harm reduction programs provide trusted, low-barrier, and repeated contact with PWUO, tobacco cessation support is not routinely integrated into these settings. We assessed current use of different forms of tobacco products and smoking cessation behaviors among PWUO and considered implications for integrating tobacco cessation into harm reduction services. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among PWUO attending a syringe service program (SSP) in New H

Depression screening outcomes among adolescents, young adults, and adults reporting past 30-day tobacco and cannabis use.

BACKGROUND: Few studies examine the relationship between depression and use of specific tobacco and/or cannabis products among adolescents, young adults, and adults. We determined whether the odds of depression are greater among those who used specific tobacco and/or cannabis products and among co-users of tobacco and cannabis. METHOD: Cross-sectional online survey of a national convenience sample of 13-40-year-olds (N = 6,038). The survey included depression screening and past 30-day use of specific tobacco and cannabis products (cigarettes; e-cigarettes, vaped cannabis, little cigars, cigar

Examining awareness of tobacco's oral health effects: Dentists' role in smoking cessation among dental patients.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco products are well-known as a major risk factor for systemic and oral diseases. Dentists may play an important role in the prevention and progression of oral problems related to smoking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of awareness about the poor oral health effects of tobacco products and the role of dentists in smoking cessation among dental patients. METHODS: A survey containing 40 questions was prepared, and patients seeking dental treatment between June and October 2019 at the School of Dentistry, Ege University, were asked to participate. The survey

Taking global leadership in banning menthol and other flavours in tobacco: Canada's experience.

Measures to ban or restrict menthol and other flavours in tobacco products are under consideration or newly implemented in an increasing number of jurisdictions across the world. As one of the world leaders, Canada's experience in successfully developing and implementing such measures can be instructive for other jurisdictions. This paper explores the history of how Canada was able to implement tobacco flavour bans including menthol, examines some of the challenges and presents lessons learnt for other jurisdictions. The crucial motivation for these bans emerged from surveillance data showing

Intragroup Variance in Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Tobacco Use Behaviors: Evidence That Subgroups Matter, Notably Bisexual Women.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging evidence suggests bisexual populations are at increased risk for a variety of negative health outcomes, including tobacco use. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) populations are at increased risk for cigarette smoking, but research on LGB subpopulations' use of tobacco products beyond cigarettes and tobacco use differences across LGB subgroups is in its infancy. This study explores differences in use of tobacco products across LGB subgroups, including gender differences among bisexuals. METHODS: This study reports results from a 2013 nationally-representative cross-sectio

Lifetime Smoking History and Cause-Specific Mortality in a Cohort Study with 43 Years of Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: In general, smoking increases the risk of mortality. However, it is less clear how the relative risk varies by cause of death. The exact impact of changes in smoking habits throughout life on different mortality risks is less studied. METHODS: We studied the impact of baseline and lifetime smoking habits, and duration of smoking on the risk of all-cause mortality, mortality of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), any cancer and of the four most common types of cancer (lung, colorectal, prostate, and breast cancer) in a cohort study (Vlagtwed

Tobacco Product Use Among Adults - United States, 2020.

Although cigarette smoking has declined over the past several decades, a diverse landscape of combustible and noncombustible tobacco products has emerged in the United States (1-4). To assess recent national estimates of commercial tobacco product use among U.S. adults aged ≥18 years, CDC analyzed data from the 2020 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). In 2020, an estimated 47.1 million U.S. adults (19.0%) reported currently using any commercial tobacco product, including cigarettes (12.5%), e-cigarettes (3.7%), cigars (3.5%), smokeless tobacco (2.3%), and pipes* (1.1%).† From 2019 to 2020

Alternative flavored and unflavored tobacco product use and cigarette quit attempts among current smokers experiencing homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Alternative tobacco product (ATP) use is common in the general population; however, few studies have explored ATP among individuals experiencing homelessness. We recruited individuals experiencing homelessness who were current cigarette smokers to explore flavored and unflavored ATP use and its association with past-year cigarette quit attempts. METHODS: Using time-location sampling, we recruited participants from eight service sites in San Francisco, CA between December 2017 and July 2018. We explored type of ATP use and perceptions of product addiction, harm and risk between c

Effects of Exposure to Tobacco and Electronic Cigarette Advertisements on Tobacco Use: An Analysis of the 2015 National Youth Tobacco Survey.

PURPOSE: Tobacco advertising influences youth smoking behavior. Electronic cigarette (E-cigarette) advertising appears to encourage e-cigarette use among youth. Our aim was to explore the combined effect of exposure to both traditional tobacco advertising and e-cigarette advertising on youth's current use of traditional tobacco products and e-cigarettes. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2015 National Youth Tobacco Survey (N = 17,711) in the U.S. Three levels of advertising exposure were assessed: none, traditional tobacco-only advertisements, and traditional tobacco and e-cigarette advert

Tobacco-induced contact dermatitis.

Tobacco and tobacco smoke are strongly associated with various skin conditions, among which contact dermatitis is of prime importance. The aetiological and clinical aspects vary according to the different tobacco production and processing steps. Contact dermatitis is frequent in tobacco harvesters, curers and cigar makers, whereas it rarely affects smokers and, only exceptionally, cigarette packaging workers. The skin sites involved also vary, according to whether the exposure is occupational or non-occupational. Tobacco contact irritation is far more frequent than contact allergy. The sensiti
