Coronary angioplasty and cancer risk: a population-based cohort study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) has become the reperfusion method of choice in patients with coronary artery disease. This sometimes complicated and lengthy procedure is performed using fluoroscopy and cineradiography or digital imaging, which may result in considerable exposure to ionizing radiation. Possible cancer risks in PTCA patients have been discussed, but never before examined in a population-based setting. OBJECTIVE: To assess the cancer risks following PTCA. METHODS: A cohort study was carried out based on nationwide registration of all coronary a

Acute mechanical valve thrombosis of the St. Jude medical prosthesis.

From 1986 to 1996, 2585 patients underwent valve replacement with the St. Jude medical prosthesis. Sixty experienced mechanical valve thrombosis. Seventeen of 60 patients (28.3%) had isolated aortic valve replacements, 33 had isolated mitral valve replacements (55%), and 10 had double valve replacements (16.7%) (aortic and mitral valve replacement). All patients who underwent reoperation for mechanical valve thrombosis were functional Class III or IV. Against medical advice, systemic anticoagulation with warfarin sodium had been discontinued or used only intermittently. Thus, anticoagulant act

Cineradiographic analysis of respiratory movements in a mouse model for early Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive degenerative disorder of the central nervous system known to cause a typical pattern of motor symptoms. In its later stages, PD is known to cause respiratory alterations including shortening of operational volumes and reduced velocity of respiratory-muscle contraction. It has been proposed that such changes are secondary to changes in posture and osteoarticular degeneration, leading to an alteration in the spinal axis that in turn could affect breathing mechanics. In this study, we examined respiratory movements by using cineradiography on a murine (C5

Neuromuscular diversity in archosaur deep dorsal thigh muscles.

The living members of the clade Archosauria, crocodilians and birds, differ markedly in the morphology of their deep dorsal thigh muscles. To investigate whether this diversity is accompanied by differences in motor pattern and muscle function, the hindlimbs of representative archosaurs were studied by electromyography and cineradiography during terrestrial locomotion. In a crocodilian, Alligator, the iliofemoralis and pubo-ischio-femoralis internus part 2 are both active during the swing phase of the stride cycle. This appears to be the primitive motor pattern for archosaurs. There are four a

Muscle pathology in idiopathic cricopharyngeal dysphagia. Enzyme histochemical and electron microscopic findings.

The structural changes in the cricopharyngeal muscle (CM) were examined ultrastructurally and by enzyme histochemistry in five patients suffering from idiopathic cricopharyngeal dysphagia (ICD). Diagnosis was established by fiberoptic esophagoscopy, esophageal manometry and cineradiography. Cricopharyngeal myotomy was performed with marked improvement in all patients. Intraoperatively, a biopsy was taken from the CM. Additionally, all patients underwent neurological examination for possible generalized muscle disease, and a biopsy was taken from a limb muscle. CM from nine cadavers without kno

A technique for in situ intracranial strain measurement within a helmeted deformable headform.

Despite the broad use of helmets, incidence of concussion remains high. Current methods for helmet evaluation focus on the measurement of head kinematics as the primary tool for quantifying risk of brain injury. Though the primary cause of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) is thought to be intracranial strain, helmet testing methodologies are not able to directly resolve these parameters. Computational injury models and impact severity measures are currently used to approximate intracranial strains from head kinematics and predict injury outcomes. Advancing new methodologies that enable exper

Early endoscopy in systemic sclerosis without gastrointestinal symptoms.

Investigation into the upper GI-tract of patients suffering from systemic sclerosis [SSc] and mixed connective tissue disease [MCTD] without symptoms of GI-tract involvement early in the course of the disease to diagnose inflammatory and motility disorders. We retrospectively analysed patients with SSc and MCTD who underwent oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy [OGD] within a year of the first diagnosis. Patients with a Rodnan skin score above 5, proton pump inhibitors and treatment regimes potentially harmful to the mucosa of the upper GI-tract were excluded. Mucosal damage of the oesophagus was cla

A cineradiographic study of lung ventilation in Alligator mississippiensis.

The skeletal and visceral kinematics of lung ventilation of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) was examined using cineradiography, pneumotachometry, and intrapulmonary pressure recording. The respiratory pattern of A. mississippiensis is intermittent and diphasic. The inspiratory lung volume is retained during the non-ventilatory period through closure of the glottis. The aspiration pump of A. mississippiensis consists of multiple components: visceral movement, pubic rotation, gastralial movement, and costosternal movement, which vary independently in their contribution to lun

The magnum procedure: surgical salvage of end-stage velopharyngeal incompetence.

One of the most difficult problems in cleft palate surgery is the patient who remains velopharyngeally incompetent after previous attempts at surgical correction. The magnum procedure was employed as a method of surgically salvaging these problem patients. The magnum flap is a procedure involving the use of a single or double hemipalatal flap based on the greater palatine vessels and inserted posterior to the hard palate to provide a maximum pushback in these patients. Eleven cases of severe and persistent velopharyngeal incompetence secondary to cleft palate after prior palatoplasty and secon

[The role of the hyoid bone in the act of deglutition after horizontal epiglottic laryngectomy].

Results of ++roentgeno-cinematographic studies of the deglutition act in patients after horizontal supraglottic laryngectomy are presented. The analysis of the material has been expected to provide an answer to what an extent the removal or the preservation of hyoid bone does influence the disorders that involve the swallowing. The entire elaborated material comprises 51 deglutition acts, having been divided into 3 groups. In the I group of studied subjects it was observed that there was a more sizable shortening of the pharynx, as well as a greater upward and forward movement of the remaining

Nasopharyngeal reflux and neonatal apnea.

Although oropharyngeal dysfunction has been reported as a cause of dysphagia in newborns, to our knowledge oropharyngeal dysfunction and neonatal apnea have not been associated previously. We studied two infants in whom apnea and bradycardia developed primarily while feeding. The diagnosis was established by observation of the swallowing mechanism using cinefluoroscopy while the infant ingested a dilute barium meal. Thickened formula feedings and use of a special nipple resulted in complete cessation of apnea and bradycardia. Careful attention to the details that surround episodes of apnea is

Selective movement of the lateral aspects of the pharyngeal walls during velopharyngeal closure for speech, blowing, and whistling in normals.

The frontal and lateral cinefluorographic views of five normal subjects performing speech, blowing, and whistling tasks were synchronized in order to observe where the greatest degree of medial movement in the lateral aspects of the pharyngeal walls was occurring in relation to structures observed in lateral view. The results of the synchronization procedure indicates that for all five subjects, maximum medial excursion in the lateral walls of the pharynx occurred at the level of the full length of the velum and hard palate, well below the levator eminance. It is hypothesized that this observe
