Citizen involvement in research on technological innovations for health, care or well-being: a scoping review.

Citizen science can be a powerful approach to foster the successful implementation of technological innovations in health, care or well-being. Involving experience experts as co-researchers or co-designers of technological innovations facilitates mutual learning, community building, and empowerment. By utilizing the expert knowledge of the intended users, innovations have a better chance to get adopted and solve complex health-related problems. As citizen science is still a relatively new practice for health and well-being, little is known about effective methods and guidelines for successful

Rapid spatiotemporal monitoring of beach microplastics in the Galápagos Islands.

Understanding the environmental fate and behaviour of microplastics across space and time is challenging, especially in remote locations such as the Galápagos Islands. Citizen science can support plastic monitoring by extending geographic and temporal coverage, though concerns persist around data validation. This study evaluated a simple citizen science methodology, aided by a near-infrared portable spectrometer (PlasTell), for the rapid monitoring of beach microplastics (>1 mm) to investigate spatiotemporal accumulation patterns on Tortuga Bay, Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos. A total of 3377 su

Using iNaturalist presence data to produce suitability maps for Triatoma protracta, T. rubida and T. recurva in the American Southwest, Texas and northern Mexico, to identify potential transmission zones of Chagas disease.

There are 11 species of triatomines in the USA, with seven reported in the American Southwest. These species are capable of transmitting Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease, but are generally sylvatic and rarely infect humans in the USA. iNaturalist is one of the most popular citizen science data portals, where users record encounters with any individual organism. As of November 2023, iNaturalist reported 722 confirmed triatomine observations in the American Southwest. Maximum entropy ecological niche modelling and bioclimatic environmental variables were used to predict

Microbial drinking water quality deterioration during distribution and household usage, determined together with citizen scientists.

During transport and storage of drinking water the microbial water quality might deteriorate. Here, we studied the vulnerability of non-chlorinated drinking water produced by two treatment plants to deterioration, by involving citizen scientists. Citizen scientists in Amsterdam sampled their drinking water directly from their kitchen tap after overnight stagnation, after flushing and after storage in containers like reusable plastic bottles. Subsequently, prokaryotic cell counts, ATP concentrations and the prokaryotic community composition were determined in the laboratory. The results showed

Long COVID Citizen Scientists: Developing a Needs-Based Research Agenda by Persons Affected by Long COVID.

BACKGROUND: Long-term health consequences following acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, referred to as post-COVID-19 condition or Long COVID, are increasing, with population-based prevalence estimates for adults at around 20%. Persons affected by Long COVID report various health problems, yet evidence to guide clinical decision making remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to identify Long COVID research priorities using a citizen science approach and solely considering the needs of those affected. METHODS: This citizen science study followed an iterative process of patient needs identif

Flyway-scale migration phenology identifies mismatches between migration timing and European hunting regulations.

The study of bird migration timing is pivotal for the identification of the onset of pre-breeding migration, when, according to the European regulatory framework, the hunting seasons should end following Article 7.4 of the EU Birds Directive. Member States may use different data sources, including citizen science platforms, to determine this onset. Here, we used data from eBird, a citizen science platform, to describe the timing of pre- and post-breeding migration of the Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) across the Western Palearctic. For EU Member States, we compared the onset dates of pre-bree

Walkability in small rural towns: Citizen scientists identify investment in pedestrian infrastructure as key to promoting health and wellbeing.

INTRODUCTION: The evidence base for how the physical environment hinders or supports walking for people living in rural and regional areas, where residents are at high risk for chronic disease and inactivity, is limited. This study investigated the built, physical environmental and spatial characteristics of small rural towns that influence walkability and identified community priorities for action. METHODS: Using a mixed methods approach this study combined spatial assessments of walkability for 92 rural Australian towns with populations less than 6000 and citizen science approaches. Towns w

Engaging citizens to conduct large-scale qualitative research: lessons learnt from a community-engaged research project on queer men's lived experiences of health in Singapore.

Introduction HIV science has made significant progress, but community engagement in some contexts remains suboptimal, with marginalized and key populations being left behind. Discriminatory policies, medical mistrust, stigma and a lack of resources remain key roadblocks. Citizen-led, community-engaged approaches hold promise in subverting power structures that reproduce such barriers and allow us to leverage community resources. Discussion We draw on our experience of a collaborative research project between the National University of Singapore and RainbowAsia, a community-based organization a

Your Family Connects: A Theory-Based Intervention to Encourage Communication about Possible Inherited Cancer Risk among Ovarian Cancer Survivors and Close Relatives.

INTRODUCTION: Encouraging family communication about possible genetic risk has become among the most important avenues for achieving the full potential of genomic discovery for primary and secondary prevention. Yet, effective family-wide risk communication (i.e., conveying genetic risk status and its meaning for other family members) remains a critical gap in the field. We aim to describe the iterative process of developing a scalable population-based communication outreach intervention, Your Family Connects, to reach ovarian cancer survivors and close relatives to communicate the potential fo

Hair salons as a promising space to provide HIV and sexual and reproductive health services for young women in Lesotho: a citizen scientist mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent girls and young women in southern Africa are disproportionately affected by HIV and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges. There is a need for more accessible and de-medicalized community spaces to offer HIV/SRH services for this key population. We aimed to assess the acceptability and feasibility of offering HIV/SRH services at hair salons in Lesotho. METHODS: We used an innovative citizen scientist mixed-methods approach, whereby hair stylists were recruited through social media, completed questionnaires, and recruited women clients aged 15-35 years as res

Adolescent-led Our Voice method to promote healthy and active lifestyles and environments in South Africa.

Adolescents' immediate environments, including their homes, schools, and neighbourhoods, have a significant impact on their behaviour, health and development. Fostering adolescents' agency and empowerment can drive environmental and behavioural changes that can lead to improved health outcomes and reduced disparities in current and future generations. The objective of the study was to pilot and evaluate the implementation of a "by the people" citizen science method (the Our Voice method), engaging adolescent high school learners in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa in promoting healthy and

The Food Equity and Environmental Data Sovereignty (FEEDS) Project: Protocol for a Quasi-Experimental Study Evaluating a Digital Platform for Climate Change Preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Despite having the tools at our disposal to enable an adequate food supply for all people, inequities in food acquisition, distribution, and most importantly, food sovereignty, worsen food insecurity. The detrimental impact of climate change on food systems and mental health is further exacerbated by a lack of food sovereignty. We urgently require innovative solutions to enable food sovereignty, minimize food insecurity, and address climate change-related mental distress (ie, solastalgia). Indigenous communities have a wealth of Traditional Knowledge for climate change adaptation a

Development and implementation of IT require focus on user participation, acceptance and workflow.

The study "Online Care" follows a municipal project "Online Welfare" where a nurse's presence in the citizen's own home was replaced by online communication. The paper is based on a citizen's perspective and seeks to develop meaningful workflow for the benefit of citizens with medical problems. The study examines five citizens' opinions on whether online communication in a meaningful way supports the citizens in what they associate with a good life. In addition, relatives and the citizen's nurse were interviewed individually concerning the same issues as the citizens. The study has been approv

Highlights in Medical Entomology, 2019: Familiar Foes and New Frontiers.

The 2019 Entomological Society of America annual meeting was held in St. Louis, Missouri, just blocks away from the iconic Gateway Arch. Representing a 'gateway to the West', this inspired the theme of the Highlights in Medical Entomology to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year as we move into a 'new frontier' of vector biology research. Papers were selected broadly across arthropods that influence public health, focusing on topics ranging from West Nile virus transmission, ticks and tick-borne disease, to advances in genetics and 'big data' studies. This included current perspectiv

Deep Learning-Based Classification of Anopheles stephensi Adult Mosquitoes with Enhanced Solutions for Data Imbalance.

Recently, a number of studies have emerged that demonstrate the power of integrating AI and citizen science for enhancing mosquito surveillance. Typical R&D has focused on detecting multiple species of mosquitoes from image datasets that are balanced. In our paper, we report findings on using AI methods and citizen-science images to detect a particularly dangerous and invasive mosquito - Anopheles stephensi - which is now a critical vector of malaria in both Asia and Africa. Given the practical significance of detecting this one species among many other mosquitoes in nature, we focused on clas

A handmade trap for malaria mosquito surveillance by citizens in Rwanda.

For effective sampling of mosquitoes in malaria surveillance programmes, it is essential to include attractive cues in traps. With the aim of implementing a citizen science project on malaria vectors in rural Rwanda, a handmade plastic bottle trap was designed and tested in the field to determine its effectiveness in capturing adult Anopheles gambiae sensu lato, the main malaria vector, and other mosquito species. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and light were used as attractive cues. CO2 was produced by inoculating sugar with yeast and water. Light was emitted from a torch by light-emitting diodes (LEDs

'Not for me': Reasons for (non)participation in science communication activities on Artificial Intelligence in the Netherlands.

Artificial intelligence operates in a social context and affects everyone. Organizing science communication and engagement activities on the topic for all groups in society is therefore recommendable. However, research shows that mainly higher educated, already engaged citizens participate in science communication activities. To address this gap, our study collected insights from underrepresented citizens in the Netherlands regarding their views on and participation in science communication activities related to artificial intelligence. Using semi-structured interviews (n = 19), we qualitative

Citizens can help to map putative transmission sites for snail-borne diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis and fasciolosis are snail-borne diseases of great medical and veterinary health importance. The World Health Organization recommends complementing drug treatment with snail control and community involvement for disease elimination, but there is a general lack of snail experts and hence snail distribution data. Therefore, we adopted a citizen science approach and involved citizens in the monitoring of medically and veterinary important snail taxa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Snail data was collected weekly by 25 trained citizen scientists (CSs) at 76 sites around south
