Isocitric and citric acid in human prostatic and seminal fluid: implications for prostatic metabolism and secretion.

Human prostatic secretion is remarkably rich in citric acid but the mechanisms to account for this accumulation are not well understood. One factor may be the extent of citrate oxidation to isocitrate, catalyzed by aconitase. The citrate-to-isocitrate ratio will help characterize the relative significance of this reaction in prostatic production and secretion of citrate. Isocitric acid and citric acid were measured in samples of seminal fluid and expressed prostatic secretion (EPS). A constant ratio between citrate and isocitrate of about 33:1 was found (r = 0.93, P < 0.0001) despite the wide

Human clinical and histologic repair responses following the use of citric acid in periodontal therapy.

Seven blocks containing one tooth each were obtained from two patients undergoing treatment for periodontitis. Sixteen weeks prior to block removal, these sites were treated by periodontal flap surgery. In six teeth a citric acid solution (pH = 1) was applied for 2 minutes to the planed root surfaces. The seventh tooth received identical periodontal therapy except that saline was applied to the planed root for 2 minutes. At the end of the experimental period, the blocks were removed and prepared for histologic study. In five out of six citric acid treated specimens, no evidence was observed su

Multifunctional films of cellulose nanocrystal reinforced polyvinyl alcohol through citric acid crosslinking for efficient freshness.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a promising biodegradable packaging material, but its widespread application is severely limited by several drawbacks, including insufficient strength, poor water resistance, weak UV shielding properties, and poor preservation ability. In this study, PVA/cellulose nanocrystals/citric acid (PVA/CNC/CA) composites were fabricated using a solution blending combined with thermal crosslinking process. The effects of CNC content and CA amount on the structure and properties of the composites were systematically investigated. The crosslinked PVA composites exhibited an enha

Deciphering underexplored rhizosphere processes: root acquisition of citric acid and its metabolic journey in tomato.

Root-exuded organic acids are crucial in mitigating iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies, and their biosynthesis and secretion require significant metabolic investment. Recent studies have shown that roots can also uptake exudates. We hypothesized that citric acid uptake increases under Fe and P deficiencies, declines over time, and contributes to primary metabolism. We investigated citric acid uptake, translocation, and metabolization in Fe- and P-deficient tomato plants grown hydroponically using 13C-labelling with bulk stable-isotope and compound-specific stable-isotope analysis. Combination of citric acid and ferric chloride enhances cadmium accumulation in sweet sorghum facilitating phytoremediation.

Sweet sorghum presents a promising candidate for cadmium (Cd) phytoremediation, combining notable Cd accumulation with the added-value of bioethanol production. To develop an efficient and cost-effective strategy for enhancing this process, we evaluated chemical amendments including ferric chloride (FeCl3), citric acid (CA), polyaspartic acid (PASP), and their combinations. Preliminary screening identified the integrated application of 0.3% FeCl3 and 0.3% CA as the most effective, enhancing Cd concentrations by 1.1-1.5-fold compared to other agents without biomass penalty. This synergistic eff

Integrated bioprocessing of cassava residues for enzymatic starch recovery, citric acid production, and effluent detoxification.

Waste management and effluent treatment in bio-procedures are essential for maintaining a clean environment and enhancing the value of cassava waste. The study analysed effluents for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) content and cyanide concentration (HCN), using activated charcoal, sand, and gravel as filter media. It also evaluated the enzymatic production of starch from cassava peels and fermentation with Aspergillus niger for citric acid production. The charcoal filtration got rid of the most pollutants, dropping BOD5 from 2467 mg/L to 393 mg/L (84.07%) and HCN from 3.63 mg/L to 0.43 mg/L (

Decreased salivary α-amylase activity responding to citric acid stimulation in Myasthenia gravis with malnutrition.

OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition, defined according to Nutritional risk screening (NRS 2002), is commonly observed in patients of Myasthenia gravis (MG), a neuromuscular disorder manifested by varied degrees of skeletal muscle weakness. Because biochemical composition of saliva changes in correspondence to alterations in nutritional status, we tested our hypothesis that a certain saliva component(s) might serve as a biomarker(s) for nutrition status of MG, particularly for those MG patients with high risk of malnutrition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 60 MG patients and 60 subjects belonging to the healthy

Enhanced effect of HAH on citric acid-chelated Fe(II)-catalyzed percarbonate for trichloroethene degradation.

This work demonstrates the impact of hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HAH) addition on enhancing the degradation of trichloroethene (TCE) by the citric acid (CA)-chelated Fe(II)-catalyzed percarbonate (SPC) system. The results of a series of batch-reactor experiments show that TCE removal with HAH addition was increased from approximately 57 to 79% for a CA concentration of 0.1 mM and from 89 to 99.6% for a 0.5 mM concentration. Free-radical probe tests elucidated the existence of hydroxyl radical (HO•) and superoxide anion radical (O2•-) in both CA/Fe(II)/SPC and HAH/CA/Fe(II)/SPC systems. Howeve

Monocarboxylate permease gene SsMP1 regulates Sporisorium scitamineum mating, pathogenicity and absorption and transport of citric acid.

Sugarcane is an important sugar crop, and smut disease caused by Sporisorium scitamineum poses a severe threat with limited control measures. This study is based on transcriptome sequencing data from two distinct pathogenic strains of Sporisorium scitamineum generated in our laboratory. Among the significantly differentially expressed genes, we identified a gene predicted to encode a monocarboxylate permease, which we designated SsMP1. To investigate its biological function, SsMP1 knockout and complemented mutants were generated using PEG-mediated protoplast transformation. Our results showed

Kinetic optimization in green metal recovery: Citric acid vs glycine for sustainable Li-ion battery recycling.

Due to the natural depletion and potential toxicity of some metals in lithium ion batteries (LIB), it is getting important to recover valuable metals such as Li and Co from spent LIBs. This study used citric acid or glycine to leach the valuable metals from cathode materials of these spent LIBs such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or lithium manganese oxide (LMO) batteries. The effects of concentrations of the citric acid or glycine, solid-liquid ratio, and H2O2 on the leaching rate of valuable metals were investigated by a batch experiment. The leached Mn2 + and Li+ in the solution were recov

Citric acid-modified pH-sensitive bone-targeted delivery of estrogen for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Bone targeted delivery of estrogen offers great promise for the clinical application of estrogen in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP). However, the current bone-targeted drug delivery system still has several issues that need to be solved, such as the side effects of bone-targeted modifier molecules and the failure of the delivery system to release rapidly in the bone tissue. It is important to aggressively search for new bone-targeted modifier molecules and bone microenvironment-responsive delivery vehicles. Inspired by the distribution of citric acid (CA) mainly in bone tis

Citric acid modified ultrasmall copper peroxide nanozyme for in situ remediation of environmental sulfonylurea herbicide contamination.

Herbicide residues in the environment threaten high-quality agriculture and human health. Consequently, in situ remediation of herbicide contamination is vital. We synthesized a novel self-catalyzed nanozyme, ultrasmall (2-3 nm) copper peroxide nanodots modified by citric acid (CP@CA) for this purpose, which can break down into H2O2 and Cu2+ in water or soil. Ubiquitous glutathione reduces Cu2+ into Cu+, which promotes the decomposition of H2O2 into •OH through a Fenton-like reaction under mild acid conditions created by the presence of citric acid. The generated •OH efficiently degrade nicosu
