It has recently been discovered that anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) are present in 50% of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Assays for detecting ACPA have been shown to have very good diagnostic and predictive characteristics, and they may facilitate the identification of patients with early arthritis who need aggressive treatment. In addition to their diagnostic and predictive properties, ACPA have also provided new insights into the pathophysiology of RA. The specific association of certain genetic and environmental risk factors with ACPA-positive but not with ACPA

The presence or absence of antibodies to citrullinated peptides/proteins (ACPA) is an important parameter that helps a clinician set a diagnosis of early rheumatoid arthritis and, hence, initiate treatment. There are several commercial tests available to measure ACPA levels, although it can be difficult to decide what the best test for a given clinical question is. We analyzed literature data in which the diagnostic and other properties of various ACPA tests are compared. The results show that for diagnostic purposes the CCP2 test has the highest specificity, the highest sensitivity in stratif

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a severe, progressive, systemic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. Early diagnosis of RA is important to identify individuals who will develop severe destructive disease, so that effective treatment can be initiated before irreversible damage occurs. Rheumatoid factor (RF) has been commonly used as a serological marker for RA, although RF had a tolerable sensitivity of 75.9% for RA, but low specificity of 78.7% and 75.4% for patients with other rheumatic diseases and chronic inflammatory disease, respectively. Antibodies to citrullinated protein/peptide anti

The production of autoantibodies to citrullinated type II collagen and the citrullination of type II collagen were analyzed in rheumatoid arthritis. Autoantibodies to citrullinated type II collagen were detected in 78.5% of serum samples from 130 rheumatoid arthritis patients. Autoantibodies to native noncitrullinated type II collagen were detected in 14.6% of serum samples, all of which were positive for anti-citrullinated type II collagen antibodies. Serum samples were also positive for anti-citrullinated type II collagen antibodies in 1 of 31 systemic lupus erythematosus patients and 2 of 5

This study aimed for the first time to examine the effects of L-citrulline single administration on the camel testicular haemodynamics, morphometry, steroids (estradiol [E2] and testosterone [T]), nitric oxide (NO) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) under environmental heat stress conditions. For this purpose, 10 adult Maghateer male camels were examined during September 2024 at the end of the non-breeding season. Animals were categorised into a control group (n = 5) and a treated group that received an intravenous dose of L-citrulline (n = 5;155 μmol/kg BW). Testicular length, volume, colou

BACKGROUND: Antibodies binding to citrullinated proteins are a frequent finding in rheumatoid arthritis patients and may precede the onset of clinical symptoms several years. The antibodies are a predisposing factor for bone erosions but their origin is unknown. In this study we analyze in detail the levels of protein bound citrulline and homocitrulline in several tissue samples of a single erosive arthritic surgery patient.
METHODS: Serum antibodies binding to CCP, MCV and citrulline- or homocitrulline-containing type I and II collagen carboxytelopeptides were measured. Tissue samples of a s

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether antibodies binding to citrullinated carboxy-terminal telopeptides of type I and type II collagens (TELO-I and TELO-II, respectively), mutated citrullinated vimentin (MCV) and cyclic citrullinated peptides (CCP) predict the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: A case-control study was nested within a Finnish cohort of 36 000 adults who had neither arthritis nor a history of arthritis at baseline examination in 1966-1972. Among them, 151 subjects developed seropositive (ie, positive for rheumatoid factor) RA, and 67 subjects developed seronegative RA b

BACKGROUND: In addition to anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs), antibodies targeting carbamylated (i.e., homocitrullinated) proteins (anti-CarP antibodies) have been described in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the extent to which anti-CarP antibodies are truly distinct from ACPA remains unclear, and few studies have focused on specific autoantigens. Here, we examine cross-reactivity between ACPA and anti-CarP antibodies, in the context of the candidate autoantigen α-enolase.
METHODS: Cross-reactivity was examined by immunoblotting of citrullinated and carbamylated proteins usin

Salinity stress severely limits cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) productivity by disrupting growth, photosynthesis, and ion homeostasis. This study investigated the potential of foliar-applied allantoin (1 mM) and citrulline (1 mM) to enhance salinity tolerance in hairy cucumber, a salt-sensitive Iranian landrace. A completely randomized design factorial experiment with three replications tested salinity levels (0, 50, 100 mM NaCl) and foliar treatments (control, allantoin, citrulline, and their combination). The results showed that salinity reduced plant height, dry weight, chlorophyll content (

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), caused by maternal undernutrition, impairs fetal growth and increases the risk for postnatal metabolic dysfunction. L-arginine can mitigate these effects; however, its use in sheep is limited by ruminal microbial degradation. Interestingly, L-citrulline, the precursor for arginine synthesis, bypasses ruminal catabolism and may be a practical alternative. This study evaluated if maternal L-citrulline supplementation to nutrient restricted ewes from gestational days (GD) 28 to 140 (term = 147) enhances fetal growth in lambs. Gestating ewes were fed 50% of

This study was conducted to determine the optimal standard ileal digestible (SID) arginine (Arg) to SID lysine (Lys) ratio in broilers under cyclic heat stress. Additionally this study tested whether citrulline (Cit) can replace Arg under cyclic heat stress, based on the report that a large amount of Arg is metabolized in the liver while Cit can by-pass metabolism in the liver. A total of 360, one-day-old Arbor Acres broiler chickens with initial body weight of 34.50 ± 0.87 g were placed in 24 pens. The 24 pens were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments with six replicates of fifteen br

L-arginine (ARG) availability is a critical determinant of macrophage antimicrobial capacity, as it fuels nitric oxide production and other immune effector pathways essential for restricting Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB). L-citrulline (CIT), a precursor in the ARG regeneration cycle, can replenish intracellular ARG pools when transport is limited. However, the comparative and combined effects of exogenous ARG and/or CIT on intracellular Mtb control across macrophage lineages and activation states remain insufficiently defined. This study investigate

Non-proteinogenic amino acids, such as L-citrulline and L-theanine, have garnered attention for their potential health benefits, including enhanced immunity, antioxidant activity, and cardiovascular support. The application of natural amino acids in disease treatment and health supplementation is and will remain a research hotspot in pharmaceutics. Plant-derived L-citrulline and L-theanine have demonstrated multifaceted benefits, primarily through mechanisms involving nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability (for L-citrulline) and mitochondrial regulation or immune modulation (for both). Critical gap

BACKGROUND: Arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is depleted in critically ill or surgical patients. In pediatric and adult patients, sepsis results in an arginine-deficient state, and the depletion of plasma arginine is associated with greater mortality. However, direct supplementation of arginine can result in the excessive production of nitric oxide (NO), which can contribute to the hypotension and macrovascular hypo-reactivity observed in septic shock. Pegylated arginine deiminase (ADI-PEG20, pegargiminase) reduces plasma arginine and generates citrulline that can be trans

A novel flame retardant (FR), the ammonium salt of citrulline-penta (methylphosphonic acid) (ACPMPA) based on L-citrulline was synthesized, and its structure was characterized by 13C, 1H, and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The ACPMPA flame retardant molecule contains five ammonium salts of phosphorus acid and one ammonium salt of carboxylic acid, which allowed the covalent attachment of ACPMPA onto cellulose via -P=O(-O-C) and -COOC bonds. The results showed that the treated cotton fabrics had very high flame retardance and excellent durability. The limiting oxygen index (L

INTRODUCTION: Oral L-citrulline supplementation increases serum L-arginine levels more efficiently than L-arginine itself and increases nitric oxide (NO) production.
AIM: To investigate whether oral L-citrulline supplementation improves erectile function in rats with acute arteriogenic erectile dysfunction (ED).
METHODS: We divided 8-week-old male Wistar-ST rats into 3 groups: sham-operated rats (control group), arteriogenic ED rats who underwent ligation of both internal iliac arteries (ligation group), and arteriogenic ED rats receiving oral 2% L-citrulline water supplementation (citrullin

In uterine smooth muscle, the effects of watermelon and its citrulline content are unknown. The aims of this study were therefore, to determine the effects of watermelon extract and citrulline on the myometrium and to investigate their mechanisms of action. The effects of extracts of watermelon flesh and rind and L-citrulline (64 μmol/L) were evaluated on 3 types of contractile activity; spontaneous, those elicited by potassium chloride (KCl) depolarization, or oxytocin (10 nmol/L) application in isolated rat uterus. Citrulline and nitric oxide (NO) are synthesized by NO synthase (NOS) in a 1:1-stoichiometry. In this study, we determined by HPLC arginine and citrulline concentrations by fluorescence detection and nitrate levels by UV absorbance detection in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with acute hydrocephalus that underwent ventricular drainage. We found increased citrulline concentration (50.6+/-17.2 versus 20.9+/-2.0 microM) and decreased arginine/citrulline molar ratio (0.42+/-0.11 versus 1.12+/-0.16) in hydrocephalus patients, while arginine and nitrate concentrations and citrulline/nit
