Memory research remains focused on just a few brain structures-in particular, the hippocampal formation (the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex). Three key discoveries promote this continued focus: the striking demonstrations of enduring anterograde amnesia after bilateral hippocampal damage; the realization that synapses in the hippocampal formation are plastic e.g., when responding to short bursts of patterned stimulation ("long-term potentiation" or LTP); and the discovery of a panoply of spatially-tuned cells, principally surveyed in the hippocampal formation (place cells coding for positio

BACKGROUND: The insular perforating arteries originate from the middle cerebral artery. They have only been very partially described up to now. In the literature, they come from the M2 segment and three types are listed: the short, medium and long perforators. The first two types supply the claustrum as well as the external and extreme capsules.
OBJECTIVE: We describe the anatomy of long perforating insular arteries and their arterial contribution to the main white matter bundles of the oval center of Vieussens.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: Twenty adult cadaveric hemispheres were studied after perf

A quantitative technique involving serial sectioning and semiautomatic morphometric analysis was used to assess the severity of the reduction in size of the major brain structures in cerebral hemispheres of children congenitally infected with HIV-1. Cerebral hemispheres from 12 children (18-48 months of age) who died of AIDS were sectioned into 5-mm-thick serial slabs and photographed. The cross-sectional areas of grossly recognizable brain structures were digitized, and the volumes were calculated according to Cavalieri's principle. The results were compared with those of an identically proce

Pregnant squirrel monkeys were exposed 5 days/week to mercury vapor at a concentration of 0.5 mg Hg/m3 air for 7 hr/day, or at 1 mg Hg/m3 air for 4 or 7 hr/day. The calculated total mercury absorption ranged between 0.8 and 5.4 mg (range of daily absorption 0.04-0.07 mg). The mercury concentration in the cerebral occipital lobe of the offspring ranged between 0.20 and 0.70 microgram/g tissue, and in the mothers between 0.8 and 2.58 micrograms/g tissue. Mapping of the distribution of mercury in the neocortical layers of the maternal brains revealed that the pyramidal cells contained more visual

Memory formation and storage rely on multiple interconnected brain areas, the contribution of which varies during memory consolidation. The medial prefrontal cortex, in particular the prelimbic cortex (PL), was traditionally found to be involved in remote memory storage, but recent evidence points toward its implication in early consolidation as well. Nevertheless, the inputs to the PL governing these dynamics remain unknown. Here, we first performed a brain-wide, rabies-based retrograde tracing screen of PL engram cells activated during contextual fear memory formation in male mice to identif

Posterior cingulate cortex (area 23, A23) in human and monkeys is a critical component of the default mode network and is involved in many diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, autism, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia. However, A23 has not yet identified in rodents, and this makes modeling related circuits and diseases in rodents very difficult. Using a comparative approach, molecular markers and unique connectional patterns this study has uncovered the location and extent of possible rodent equivalent (A23~) of the primate A23. A23 ~ but not adjoining are

Pain habituation is associated with a decrease of activation in brain areas related to pain perception. However, little is known about the specificity of these decreases to pain, as habituation has also been described for other responses like spinal reflexes and other sensory responses. Thus, it might be hypothesized that previously reported reductions in activation are not specifically related to pain habituation. For this reason, we performed a 3 T fMRI study using either painful or non-painful electrical stimulation via an electrode attached to the back of the left hand. Contrasting painful

Gray matter (GM) lesions are recognized as important components of the pathology of multiple sclerosis (MS), and involvement of the deep gray matter (DGM) is suggested by magnetic resonance imaging. The aims of this study were to determine the frequency and distribution of lesions and characterize the inflammatory and neurodegenerative changes in DGM of MS patients. Histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and morphometry were performed on whole coronal sections of 14 MS and 12 control (6 normal, 6 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients) brains. Demyelinating lesions were frequent in MS DGM;

An epileptic focus was formed in the anteromedial part of the prefrontal cortex in rats by means of intracortical injection of penicillin, and radioactively labeled deoxyglucose was immediately injected intravenously. Auto-radiograms revealed that, in addition to the injected cortical area, a number of formations increased their consumption of deoxyglucose. The labeled formations were the posterior medial and perirhinal cortical areas, the anteromedial part of the neostriatum, the anterior and intermediodorsal part of globus pallidus, the entopeduncular nucleus, the reticular portion of the su

Rapid eye movement sleep is a state characterized by concomitant occurrence of rapid eye movements, electroencephalographic activation and muscle atonia. In this review, we provide up to date knowledge on the neuronal network controlling its onset and maintenance. It is now accepted that muscle atonia during rapid eye movement sleep is due to activation of glutamatergic neurons localized in the pontine sublaterodorsal tegmental nucleus. These neurons directly project and excite glycinergic/γ-aminobutyric acid-ergic pre-motoneurons localized in the ventromedial medulla. The sublaterodorsal tegm

During the last two decades, our inner sense of time has been repeatedly studied with the help of neuroimaging techniques. These investigations have suggested the specific involvement of different brain areas in temporal processing. At least two distinct neural systems are likely to play a role in measuring time: One is mainly constituted of subcortical structures and is supposed to be more related to the estimation of time intervals below the 1-sec range (subsecond timing tasks), and the other is mainly constituted of cortical areas and is supposed to be more related to the estimation of time

Here we present a novel tracing technique to stain projection neurons in Golgi-like detail by double viral infection. We used retrograde lentiviral vectors and adeno-associated viral vectors (AAV) to drive "TET-ON/TET-OFF system" in neurons connecting two regions. Using this method, we successfully labeled the corticothalamic (CT) cells of the mouse somatosensory barrel field (S1BF) and motor cortex (M1) in their entirety. We also labeled contra- and ipsilaterally-projecting corticocortical (CC) cells of M1 by targeting contralateral M1 or ipsilateral S1 for retrograde infection. The strength

Individuals with a family history of alcoholism (FH+) are at enhanced risk of developing an alcohol or other substance use disorder relative to those without this history (FH-). Recent studies comparing FH+ and FH- individuals have revealed differences in cognition, emotion processing, sociability, and decision-making. These differences suggest possible altered brain functioning in FH+ individuals that may play a crucial role in vulnerability to substance use disorders. In the present study, 15 FH+ and 19 FH- individuals performed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a simulated card game requiring i

A heterozygous T183A mutation in the prion protein (PrP) gene, PRNP, was identified in a patient with histopathologically confirmed spongiform encephalopathy. Clinically, this form of prion disease was characterized by early-onset dementia as the predominant sign, along with global cerebral atrophy and hypometabolism. The age at onset was 40 years and the disease duration was 4 years. Additional neurological signs including cerebellar ataxia and EEG abnormalities were absent until late stages of the disease. The T183A mutation was not found in non-affected family members. This mutation results

All sectors of the human cerebral cortex receive dense cholinergic input. The origin of this projection is located in the Ch4 cell group of the nucleus basalis of Meynert. However, very little is known about the location of the pathways which link the cholinergic neurons of the nucleus basalis to the human cerebral cortex. This question was addressed in whole-hemisphere sections processed for the visualization of multiple cholinergic markers. Two highly organized and discrete bundles of cholinergic fibres extended from the nucleus basalis to the cerebral cortex and amygdala and were designated

A specific receptor for cannabinoids has been characterized at the pharmacological, molecular, and neuroanatomical level. However, less is known of the functional localization in the brain for the behavioral and physiological actions of these drugs. We have examined the effects of delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and its active metabolite 11-OH-THC on regional cerebral blood flow in the rat in order to determine functional CNS sites of action for the cannabinoids. Conscious rats were injected i.v. with one of four doses of THC (0.5, 1, 4, 16 mg/kg). 11-OH-THC (4 mg/kg), or vehicle 30 min pri

Psilocybin is a serotonergic psychedelic drug with emerging therapeutic applications, yet its actions under glutamatergic dysfunction, and relevance to schizophrenia and associated psychiatric disorders, remain unclear. We examined the acute and long-lasting effects of psilocybin (1 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) on behavioral and neural outcomes in the metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGlu5) knockout (KO) mouse model of schizophrenia. The mGlu5 KO mice displayed psilocybin-induced hyperlocomotion, whereas wild-type (WT) mice did not. Additionally, male mGlu5 KO mice showed an amplified psilocybin-

Some patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) develop dose-related fluctuations in mood. This may reflect alterations in dopamine-influenced brain circuits that mediate emotion. However, there is no available information to localize which dopamine-influenced neurons may be most affected. Eight patients with PD and clinically significant levodopa-related mood fluctuations (mania, depression, or anxiety) were compared to 13 patients with similarly severe PD and fluctuations of motor function but not of mood. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured with positron emission tomograph
