Non-syndromic Cleft Lip and Palate Polymorphisms Affect Normal Lip Morphology.

Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without palate (NSCL/P) is a frequent malformation of the facial region. Genetic variants (SNPs) within nineteen loci have been previously associated with NSCL/P in GWAS studies of European individuals. These common variant SNPs may have subtler effects on the morphology of the lip and face in unaffected individuals. Several studies have investigated the genetic influences on facial morphology using land-marking methods, but these landmarks are sparse in the lip region. The aim of this study is to assess for associations between the nineteen NSCL/P SNPs and norm

Oblique lip-alveolar banding in patients with cleft lip and palate.

We report an oblique lip-alveolar band, a rare banding of soft tissue that involves the lip and alveolus, which we have found in five patients with cleft lip and palate (0.2%), compared with an incidence of the Simonartz lip-lip band of 5.7%). To our knowledge this has not been reported previously. In two patients the bands affected the cleft lip and alveolus bilaterally, with or without the palatal cleft, and in three the bands were unilateral cleft lip and alveolus with or without the palatal cleft.

Correction of tethered upper lip deformity following bilateral cleft lip repair.

BACKGROUND: Shallow upper buccal sulcus, vertical shortness (whistling deformity), and limited mobility of the median part of the upper lip are among the most common secondary deformities following surgical repair of wide bilateral cleft lip. They are often encountered together as a triad of postoperative deformities with a common etiology. To date, there has been no surgical procedure to correct these 3 associated deformities in 1 stage. PURPOSE: In this article, we describe the triad above-mentioned 3 associated postoperative deformities as a single clinical entity, namely the tethered uppe

Cleft lip and palate, lower lip pits, and limb deficiency defects.

Cleft lip or palate and lower lip pits are typical features of the autosomal dominantly inherited Van der Woude syndrome. Limb defects have not been reported in this syndrome so far. A girl with a unilateral complete cleft lip and palate, bilateral lower lip pits, and amniotic deformities of all four limbs is reported and the possibility of chance occurrence of cleft lip and palate, lower lip pits, and limb defects is discussed.

Lip posture and mouth width in children with unilateral cleft lip.

The aim of this study was to measure on photographs the protrusion of the upper and lower lips and demonstrate their relationships to each other, to measure the width of the mouth, and to compare these findings within complete and incomplete cleft groups and with normal controls at the ages of 5 and 10 years. It was found that the lower lip was more protrusive and the mouth width was narrower in 5-year-old children with complete clefts prior to maxillary collapse than in the control children. It is concluded that there is a lack of tissue in the cleft lip leading to less distensibility and inc

Lip pits, cleft lip and/or palate, and congenital heart disease.

Three individuals in whom lip pits and cleft lip and/or cleft palate were found in association with congenital heart disease are described. These individuals did not have the characteristics of previously delineated syndromes in which lip pits occur, including Vanderwoude syndrome, popliteal pterygium syndrome, and orodigitofacial dysostosis. Literature review failed to show any previously reported cases in which pits were observed in association with congenital heart disease.

Oral adhesions associated with cleft lip and palate and lip fistulae.

Three cases of congenital strand-like adhesions between the upper and lower gum pads associated with cleft lip and palate and lower lip fistulae are reported. A consideration of the literature would suggest that this may represent an autosomal dominant trait with variable penetrance and expressivity though a positive family history was found in only one case. The adhesions may have arisen by persistence of the oropharyngeal membrane or anomalous fusion of adjacent epithelial surfaces, the latter seeming rather more likely in the present series. The clinical implications are discussed.

Evaluation of lip force in patients with unilateral and bilateral cleft lip.

Our aim was to investigate the differences in the dynamics of lip force between a group of participants with repaired cleft lips and a group of patients the same age but without clefts. We evaluated 101 children between the ages of 10 to 15 years (unilateral clefts n=35, bilateral clefts n=15, class I malocclusion n=25, and class III malocclusion n=26). Maximum and minimum forces required to close the lips were evaluated with the Lip De Cum® device (Cosmos Instruments Co Ltd, Tokyo, Japan) for the all groups. We found no significant differences between the maximum and minimum values between bo

[Three-dimensional analysis of the morphology of philtrum and philtral dimple of unilateral cleft lip/cleft lip and palate patients before and after secondary cleft lip and nose repair].

The purpose of this study is to measure the morphology of the nose and lip of unilateral cleft lip/cleft lip and palate (UCL/UCLP) patients with a three-dimensional (3-D) digitizer before and after secondary cleft lip and nose repair, and to compare them with normal adults, as well as to investigate the effectiveness of philtrum plastic surgery. This study includes 21 UCL/CLP patients who received the same operation. We used 12 normal adults as the control group. We took facial impressions at the time of pre-operation and six months after operation, and constructed the models using hard plaste

Gene-Environment Interplay and MicroRNAs in Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate.

Cleft lip (CL) with/without cleft palate (CP) (hereafter CL/P) is the second most common congenital birth defect, affecting 7.94 to 9.92 children per 10,000 live births worldwide, followed by Down syndrome. An increasing number of genes have been identified as affecting susceptibility and/or as causative genes for CL/P in mouse genetic and chemically-induced CL and CP studies, as well as in human genome-wide association studies and linkage analysis. While marked progress has been made in the identification of genetic and environmental risk factors for CL/P, the interplays between these factors

Alveolar band in patients with cleft lip and cleft alveolar deformities.

A complete cleft of the lip is often interrupted by a Simonarzt band. Very rarely, a similar fibrous soft tissue band can be seen interrupting the complete cleft of the alveolus. This alveolar band has not been previously described in the literature.

Oral health of individuals with cleft lip, cleft palate, or both.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the oral health of children with cleft lip and palate. DESIGN: DMFT (dmft) and DMFS (dmfs) were calculated on the basis of visual examination. Periodontal disease was assessed by classical clinical parameters: volume gain, bleeding, probing depth, loss of insertion, gingival recession. and calculus. PATIENTS: Seventy-eight individuals aged 1 to 32 years took part in the study. RESULTS: The dmft was 2.91 (+/- 3.99) in the 1- to 5-year-old age group and 2.77 (+/- 3.15) in the 6- to 12-year-old group. The DMFT averages for the age groups of 6 to 12 years, 13 to 18 years,

Congenitally missing second premolars in cleft lip and cleft palate children.

Panoramic and periapical radiographs of 278 patients with cleft lip, cleft palate, or both (158 males and 120 females), age 5 to 18 years, were examined to determine the frequency of missing second premolars and the possible association between the cleft side and the side from which the premolar was absent. The prevalence (18%) of missing premolars found in this study is significantly higher than is found in the general population. A considerably higher incidence of missing second premolars was found in the maxilla compared with the mandible both for unilateral and bilateral missing teeth. The

Effect of Cleft Types on Outcome of Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair.

INTRODUCTION: It is generally assumed that the major phenotypes of unilateral cleft lip (UCL) represent its extent of severity. There are a few studies on this, but objectivity has been lacking. It was the aim of this study to assess the effect of different phenotypes of UCL on the outcome of surgical repair. METHODOLOGY: This study was a case series of the effect of phenotypes of cleft on the outcome of repair of UCL. Fifteen subjects each were in three UCL phenotype groups. Surgical outcome was assessed quantitatively with anthropometric measurements recorded from a full frontal face photog

Descriptive epidemiology of cleft lip and cleft palate in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: The reported birth prevalence of orofacial clefts (OFCs) varies considerably. This study describes the epidemiology of OFCs in an Australian population. METHODS: We studied infants diagnosed with cleft lip, with or without cleft palate (CL±P), and cleft palate only (CPO) since 1980 and reported to the population based Western Australian Register of Developmental Anomalies. We calculated prevalence rates by sex, Aboriginal status, geographic location, and socio-economic status.
