We identified 22 women with thrombocytopenia of < 100,000/microliters found incidentally during pregnancy and prospectively monitored their platelet count and clinical outcome for a minimum of 6 months postpartum. During the study period, four women became pregnant twice, accounting for a total of 26 pregnancies. The lowest platelet count during pregnancy was 65,600/microliters +/- 19,400 (mean +/- SD), and at delivery 84,500/microliters +/- 32,300 (P < 0.02). The immunosuppressive acidic protein (IAP) has been described as a tumor associated marker in some solid tumors and hematologic diseases. To define the clinical relevance the authors determined the serum IAP levels in 194 patients with malignancies before initiation of therapy, 14 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), 28 patients with bacterial pneumonia, and 23 healthy volunteers. Cytotoxic antibodies were studied in 809 pregnant women's sera. Two kinds of antibody population: HLA-A, B, C and Ia-like, were detected and a correlation was established between their presence and some clinical conditions, such as preterm delivery, spontaneous abortion, pre-eclampsia, neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia and congenital anomalies. An opposite effect of HLA-A, B, C and Ia-like antibodies was observed as far as the first three parameters are concerned. On the basis of these investigations a protective role of Ia-like antibodies for the newborn can be implied.

Of 102 alcoholics admitted to an alcoholism treatment unit one third (33) were clinically rated as having a disabling agoraphobia and/or social phobia, and a further third (37) as having less disabling phobic symptoms of either or both kinds. In man, the main pancreatic duct is normally derived from ventral and dorsal embryological buds of the pancreas. In a minority of people, failure of fusion of the two buds results in separate drainage of the dorsal and ventral pancreas, so that the accessory duct provides the main drainage for the gland. Synovial fluid analysis can provide a prompt and definite diagnosis of crystal-induced arthritis, the most common acute inflammatory arthritis and a cause of chronic arthritis that may mimic rheumatoid, psoriatic, or peripheral spondyloarthritis. In many patients the diagnosis of gout or calcium pyrophosphate arthritis cannot be made with certainty without synovial fluid analysis.
