Prenatal PFAS exposure and outcomes related to maternal gut microbiome composition in later pregnancy.

The composition of the gut microbiome is dependent on factors including diet, lifestyle, and exposure to environmental chemicals, and has implications for human health. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a class of man-made chemicals that have nonstick and flame-retardant properties may impact on gut microbiome composition. Our objective was to elucidate links between PFAS and maternal gut microbiome composition in two geographically diverse sites of the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes program. The present analysis includes participants in the Atlanta African America

The effects of dietary supplementation with lotus leaf extract on the immune response and intestinal microbiota composition of broiler chickens.

This study aimed to assess the effect of lotus leaf extract (LLE) on the immune response and intestinal microbiota composition of broiler chickens. One-day-old birds were assigned to 7 treatments. Two maize-based control diets were each given with or without 50 mg/kg chlortetracycline (antibiotics and blank control groups, respectively). Five experimental diets were each given with 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, or 10.0 g/kg LLE. Average daily weight gain (ADG) was assessed, and the immune organ index was calculated. Serum cytokine and immunoglobulin levels were determined, and intestinal microbiota comp

Characterization of the gut microbiome and resistome of piglets supplemented with low, moderate, and high concentrations of zinc oxide.

UNLABELLED: The livestock sector is standing out for its substantial use of antimicrobials but is also investing in the development of mitigation strategies. Supranutritional concentrations of zinc (Zn) are served to piglets to prevent post-weaning diarrhea. This practice is detrimental to the piglet's assimilation of nutrients and can impact the environment through the excretion of unassimilated Zn, contributing to the persistence of antibiotic resistance by co-selection. In this study, the ileum and colon microbiome of piglets fed low (175 ppm), moderate (953 ppm), or high (2,991 ppm) concen

High-dose dietary supplementation with zinc prevents gut inflammation: Investigation of the role of metallothioneins and beyond by transcriptomic and metagenomic studies.

Although it is known that zinc has several beneficial roles in the context of gut inflammation, the underlying mechanisms have not been extensively characterized. Zinc (Zn) is known to be the primary physiological inducer of the expression of the metallothionein (MT) superfamily of small stress-responsive proteins. The expression of MTs in various tissues is induced or enhanced (including the gastrointestinal tract (GIT)) by a variety of stimuli, including infection and inflammation. However, the MTs' exact role in inflammation is still subject to debate. In order to establish whether or not M

The Impact of Ultra-Marathon Running on the Gut Microbiota as Determined by Faecal Bacterial Profiling, and Its Relationship with Exercise-Associated Gastrointestinal Symptoms: An Exploratory Investigation.

Background/Objectives: This exploratory study aimed to evaluate the impact of an 80 km ultra-marathon trail running event on changes in faecal bacterial composition, and to investigate whether any correlations exist between exercise-associated gastrointestinal symptoms (Ex-GIS) with faecal bacterial profiles. Such events represent a unique physiological stressor and may impact the composition of the gut microbiota. Studying this impact may provide insights into acute (i.e., <24 h) gut microbiota changes under extreme conditions. Methods: Thirteen endurance athletes (n = 7 males, n = 6 females)

Time-series metatranscriptomics reveals differential salinity effects on the methanogenic food web in paddy soil.

Saltwater intrusion and sea level rise (SWISLR) threaten coastal agroecosystems, yet their impact on the methanogenic food web in rice paddies remains virtually unknown. Using "double-RNA" metatranscriptomics (rRNA, mRNA), we investigated salinity effects on the methanogenic community in straw-amended slurries following different preincubation periods. Our results demonstrate that salt stress significantly inhibits methane (CH4) production, with the degree of inhibition varying by the community's successional stage. Salinity fundamentally shifted the methanogenic food web toward Clostridiaceae

Fecal Dysbiosis and Inflammation in Intestinal-Specific Cftr Knockout Mice on Regimens Preventing Intestinal Obstruction.

UNLABELLED: Chronic intestinal inflammation is a poorly understood manifestation of Cystic Fibrosis (CF), which may be refractory to ion channel CFTR modulator therapy. People with CF exhibit intestinal dysbiosis which has potential for stimulating intestinal and systemic inflammation. CFTR is expressed in organ epithelia and in the leukocyte population. Here, we investigate the contribution of intestinal epithelial-specific loss of Cftr (iCftr KO) to dysbiosis and inflammation in mice treated with either of two anti-obstructive dietary regimens necessary to maintain CF mouse models (PEG laxat

The replacement of bacitracin methylene disalicylate with Bacillus subtilis PB6 in the diet of male Cherry Valley Ducks reduces the feed conversion ratio by improving intestinal health and modulating gut microbiota.

In this study, we compared the impacts of Bacillus subtilis PB6 (BS) and bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD) on the growth performance, intestinal morphology, expression of tight connection protein, and cecal microbiota community of male ducks through a 42-d trial. Three-hundred and sixty male Cherry Valley meat-type ducklings (1-day-old) were distributed into 3 groups of 6 replicates: CON group (control, basal diet), BMD group (basal diet + 45 mg/kg BMD, active ingredient dose in the feed), and BS group (basal diet + 2 × 107 CFU/kg BS in the feed). Results showed that supplementing the di

Effects of dicopper oxide and copper sulfate on growth performance and gut microbiota in broilers.

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of two sources of copper (Cu) from copper sulfate (CuSO4) and dicopper oxide (Cu2O, CoRouge) at three levels of inclusion (15, 75, and 150 mg/kg) on growth performance and gut microbiota of broilers. A total of 840 one-d-old male chickens (Ross 308) were weighed and randomly allocated to seven dietary treatments: negative control (NC, a basal diet without Cu addition), and the NC supplemented with 15, 75, or 150 mg Cu/kg from CuSO4 or Cu2O (12 replicate pens/treatment, 10 chicks per pen). Broilers were challenged by reusing an old litter wit

The Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug Ketorolac Alters the Small Intestinal Microbiota and Bile Acids Without Inducing Intestinal Damage or Delaying Peristalsis in the Rat.

Background: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) induce significant damage to the small intestine, which is accompanied by changes in intestinal bacteria (dysbiosis) and bile acids. However, it is still a question of debate whether besides mucosal inflammation also other factors, such as direct antibacterial effects or delayed peristalsis, contribute to NSAID-induced dysbiosis. Here we aimed to assess whether ketorolac, an NSAID lacking direct effects on gut bacteria, has any significant impact on intestinal microbiota and bile acids in the absence of mucosal inflammation. We also add

Bacteria within the Gastrointestinal Tract Microbiota Correlated with Improved Growth and Feed Conversion: Challenges Presented for the Identification of Performance Enhancing Probiotic Bacteria.

Identification of bacteria associated with desirable productivity outcomes in animals may offer a direct approach to the identification of probiotic bacteria for use in animal production. We performed three controlled chicken trials (n = 96) to investigate caecal microbiota differences between the best and poorest performing birds using four performance measures; feed conversion ratio (FCR), utilization of energy from the feed measured as apparent metabolisable energy, gain rate (GR), and amount of feed eaten (FE). The shifts in microbiota composition associated with the performance measures w

High-salt diet induces microbiome dysregulation, neuroinflammation and anxiety in the chronic period after mild repetitive closed head injury in adolescent mice.

The associations between human concussions and subsequent sequelae of chronic neuropsychiatric and cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension have been reported; however, little is known about the underlying biological processes. We hypothesized that dietary changes, including a high-salt diet, disrupt the bidirectional gut-brain axis, resulting in worsening neuroinflammation and emergence of cardiovascular and behavioural phenotypes in the chronic period after repetitive closed head injury in adolescent mice. Adolescent mice were subjected to three daily closed head injuries, recovered for

Early-Life Iron Deficiency and Subsequent Repletion Alters Development of the Colonic Microbiota in the Pig.

Background: Iron deficiency is the most prevalent micronutrient deficiency worldwide, affecting over two billion people. Early-life iron deficiency may alter the developing microbiota, which may or may not be reversible with subsequent dietary iron repletion. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine whether early-life iron deficiency and subsequent repletion alter colonic microbial composition and fermentation end-product concentrations in pigs. Methods: Forty-two male pigs received either control (CONT, 21.3 mg Fe/L) or iron-deficient (ID, 2.72 mg Fe/L) milk replacer treatments from postn
