Speciation and Antibiotic Susceptibilities of Coagulase Negative Staphylococci Isolated from Ocular Infections.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are frequently occurring ocular opportunistic pathogens that are not easily identifiable to the species level. The goal of this study was to speciate CoNS and document antibiotic susceptibilities from cases of endophthalmitis (n = 50), keratitis (n = 50), and conjunctivitis/blepharitis (n = 50) for empiric therapy. All 150 isolates of CoNS were speciated using (1) API Staph (biochemical system), (2) Biolog GEN III Microplates (phenotypic substrate system), and (3) DNA sequencing of the sodA gene. Disk diffusion antibiotic susceptibilities for topical and

Evaluation of fosfomycin combined with vancomycin against vancomycin-resistant coagulase negative staphylococci.

The pathogenic potential of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) is increasingly recognized worldwide. The aim of the present study was to evaluate different combinations of fosfomycin (FOS) with vancomycin (VAN) or oxacillin (OXA) against vancomycin-resistant clinical isolates of CoNS. Characterization of VAN resistance in selected isolates was also sought. Antibiotic susceptibility of isolates was tested by disc diffusion method, MICs of antibiotics were determined by the agar dilution method, and fosfomycin combinations were evaluated by a time-kill assay according to the guidelines of t

Coagulase-positive staphylococci isolated from chicken meat: pathogenic potential and vancomycin resistance.

Coagulase-positive staphylococci (CPS) cause staphylococcal food poisoning. Recently, these bacteria have received increasing attention due to their potential role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance markers. The present study aimed to evaluate coagulase-positive staphylococci counts, species distribution, enterotoxin genes prevalence, and the antibiotic resistance profile of CPS isolated from in natura chicken meat. Fifteen frozen and 15 chilled industrialized, uncooked chicken parts or entire carcasses were used. Staphylococcal counts revealed that frozen chicken meat samples displ

Methicillin and multidrug resistant coagulase negative staphylococcal nasal carriage in medical students.

Awareness of the virulence of coagulase negative staphylococcus (CoNS), previously regarded as commensals with minimal pathogenicity has steadily increased. CoNS is one of the most important nosocomial pathogen in blood stream infections and in patients with intravenous catheters and implants. CoNS also acts as a reservoir of drug resistance genes for S.aureus. The present study was done to know the nasal carriage rate of CoNS and methicillin resistant CoNS (MRCoNS) in medical students, the effect of hospital environment and patient exposure on carriage rate in medical students and to know the

Devastating coagulase-negative staphylococcal septicaemia in an extremely low birth weight infant.

In developed countries, coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are responsible for the majority of late-onset infections in very low birth weight infants undergoing neonatal intensive care. As a common skin commensal, they are often considered as mere contaminants of peripheral blood cultures or as relatively benign bacteria clinically. We present a case of invasive CoNS septicaemia in an extremely low birth weight infant which had devastating effects.

Determining the clinical significance of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from blood cultures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Coagulase-negative staphylococci are both an important cause of nosocomial blood-stream infections and the most common contaminants of blood cultures. Judging the clinical significance of coagulase-negative staphylococci is vital but often difficult and can have a profound impact on an institution's bloodstream infection rates. Our objective was to develop an algorithm to assist in determining the clinical significance of coagulase-negative staphylococci. DESIGN: A single experienced reviewer examined the medical records of 960 consecutive patients with positive bloo

Persistent bacteremia due to coagulase-negative staphylococci in low birth weight neonates.

During a 6-month period in 1987, 13 low birth weight neonates without indwelling central intravascular catheters had persistent (positive blood cultures for greater than or equal to 6 days) coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia despite adequate antibiotic therapy. Daily blood cultures remained persistently positive for a mean of 13 days (range 6 to 25 days). This group of infants was compared with other low birth weight infants with similar birth weights and nonpersistent coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia, defined as two or more positive blood cultures accompanied by supporti

Microbiologic studies of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from patients with nosocomial bacteraemias.

We studied 50 strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolated from 50 patients with hospital-acquired bacteraemia, identified by prospective surveillance at the University of Virginia Hospital between March 1981 and September 1982. Using the Staph-Ident System for speciation, we found that 37 strains (74%) were Staphylococcus epidermidis, 7 (14%) Staph. hominis, 3 (6%) Staph. haemolyticus and 3 (6%) Staph. warneri. 33 (66%) of the strains produced slime and a higher proportion of the Staph. epidermidis group (75%) than the non-epidermidis group (46%), did so. Bacteriophages from human skin infecting coagulase-negative Staphylococcus: diversity, novelty and host resistance.

The human skin microbiome comprises diverse populations that differ temporally between body sites and individuals. The virome is a less studied component of the skin microbiome and the study of bacteriophages is required to increase knowledge of the modulation and stability of bacterial communities. Staphylococcus species are among the most abundant colonisers of skin and are associated with both health and disease yet the bacteriophages infecting the most abundant species on skin are less well studied. Here, we report the isolation and genome sequencing of 40 bacteriophages from human skin sw

Infective endocarditis secondary to coagulase-negative staphylococcus revealed by endogenous endophthalmitis: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Endogenous endophthalmitis is a rare disease which remains a diagnostic and therapeutic emergency. Infective endocarditis is the first etiology, and coagulase-negative staphylococcus is most often incriminated in endocarditis on prosthesis and rarely on native valve. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 70 year old female patient, who has a chronic renal failure on haemodialysis, admitted to the ophthalmology department in endogenous endophthalmitis. Blood cultures, intravitreal sampling and culture of the haemodialysis catheter were positive for a multi-sensitive coagulase-nega

Vancomycin Heteroresistance and Clinical Outcomes in Bloodstream Infections Caused by Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are a common etiology of serious and recurrent infections in immunocompromised patients. Although most isolates appear susceptible to vancomycin, a single strain might have a subpopulation of resistant bacteria. This phenomenon is termed heteroresistance and may adversely affect the response to treatment. A retrospective cohort study was performed of pediatric patients with leukemia treated at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital who developed CoNS central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI). Available isolates were sequenced and tested for v

Prevalence of methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci among Egyptian patients after surgical interventions.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are frequently isolated from wound infections. There are limited data examining the prevalence of methicillin-resistant CoNS (MRCoNS) among Egyptian patients after surgery. Thus, we studied 208 hospitalised patients, who had skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) due to various causes. Samples were cultured for isolation and identification of CoNS and isolates were screened for susceptibility against 23 different antimicrobials. Out of 241 Staphylococcal isolates, 114 (47.3%) were CoNS. The prevalence of MRCoNS among surgical site infection, diabetic fo

Antimicrobial Resistance of Coagulase-Positive Staphylococcus Isolates Recovered in a Veterinary University Hospital.

The Staphylococcus pseudintermedius group (SIG) is an emerging threat in veterinary medicine, particularly methicillin-resistant (MRSP) isolates, which are frequently associated with multidrug resistance. Reliable identification of SIG members is critical to establish correct antimicrobial treatments. However, information on the molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance patterns of MRSP in some regions is still limited. This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial resistance of SIG isolates recovered from animals at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Complutense University of Madrid

Virulence factors in coagulase-positive staphylococci of veterinary interest other than Staphylococcus aureus.

Coagulase-positive Staphylococci (CoPS) can exist as commensals in humans, companion and food-producing animals, but can cause severe or even lethal diseases. Exchange of these bacteria between humans and animals has been described. Special attention has been focused on Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, but other CoPS can also represent an important threat. In addition to significant antimicrobial resistance, these bacteria may carry a plethora of virulence factors - molecules that allow bacteria to establish on or within a host and increase their ability to cause disease. These vir
