Coal-water slurries containing petrochemicals to solve problems of air pollution by coal thermal power stations and boiler plants: An introductory review.

This introductory study presents the analysis of the environmental, economic and energy performance indicators of burning high-potential coal water slurries containing petrochemicals (CWSP) instead of coal, fuel oil, and natural gas at typical thermal power stations (TPS) and a boiler plant. We focus on the most hazardous anthropogenic emissions of coal power industry: sulfur and nitrogen oxides. The research findings show that these emissions may be several times lower if coal and oil processing wastes are mixed with water as compared to the combustion of traditional pulverized coal, even of

Coal workers' pneumoconiosis and progressive massive fibrosis are increasingly more prevalent among workers in small underground coal mines in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) or progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) among United States underground miners is associated with mine size. METHODS: We examined chest radiographs from 1970 to 2009 of working miners who participated in the National Coal Workers Health Surveillance Program for the presence of small and large opacities consistent with pneumoconiosis, based upon the International Labour Organization classification system. RESULTS: A total of 145 512 miners contributed 240 067 radiographs for analysis. From the 1990s to the 2000

Progression of coal workers' pneumoconiosis absent further exposure.

OBJECTIVES: The natural history of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) after cessation of exposure remains poorly understood. METHODS: We characterised the development of and progression to radiographic progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) among former US coal miners who applied for US federal benefits at least two times between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2013. International Labour Office classifications of chest radiographs (CXRs) were used to determine initial and subsequent disease severity. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify major predictors of disease progres

Coal smoke, gestational cadmium exposure, and fetal growth.

BACKGROUND: Gestational cadmium exposure may impair fetal growth. Coal smoke has largely been unexplored as a source of cadmium exposure. We investigated the relationship between gestational cadmium exposure and fetal growth, and assessed coal smoke as a potential source of airborne cadmium, among non-smoking pregnant women in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where coal combustion in home heating stoves is a major source of outdoor and indoor air pollution. METHODS: This observational study was nested within the Ulaanbaatar Gestation and Air Pollution Research (UGAAR) study, a randomized controlled tri

Failure mechanism and control technology for the surrounding rock of retreat roadways beneath remnant coal pillars in close-distance coal seams.

This study takes the 13,402 return airway of Sunjiagou Coal Mine as the engineering background and investigates the failure and control of surrounding rock in response to asymmetric loading and deformation instability of an underlying mining roadway affected by a remnant coal pillar in closely spaced coal seams. A combination of theoretical analysis, FLAC3D numerical simulation, borehole observation, and field industrial testing was adopted to analyze stress transfer, plastic-zone evolution, and surrounding-rock failure characteristics within the remnant coal pillar-floor-roadway surrounding-r

Coal mine workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP): in vitro study of the release of organic compounds from coal mine dust in the presence of physiological fluids.

Solvents like dichloromethane generally are used to yield exhausted extraction amounts of the organic compounds in coals. Leaching of coal mine dust by dichloromethane yields extracts with comparable amounts of alkanes, aromatics, and phenolic compounds. Dominantly phenolic compounds are leached from coal mine dust by aqueous solutions saturated in lecithin because of their high water solubility. High concentrations of phenolic compounds can be extracted from coal mine dust generated from low-rank coals. Phenolic compounds leached by fluids adapted to physiological conditions correlate with hi

Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis-Associated Deaths - United States, 2020-2023.

Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is a preventable, progressive occupational lung disease caused by inhaling respirable coal mine dust, a complex mixture commonly containing coal, crystalline silica, and other silicate minerals. Early pneumoconiosis can be asymptomatic, but advanced disease often leads to disability and premature death. To describe CWP-associated mortality among U.S. residents aged ≥15 years by industry and occupation, CDC conducted an exploratory analysis of National Vital Statistics System multiple cause-of-death data for 2020-2023, the most recent years that include inform

Miners' return to work following injuries in coal mines.

BACKGROUND: The occupational injuries in mines are common and result in severe socio-economical consequences. Earlier studies have revealed the role of multiple factors such as demographic factors, behavioral factors, health-related factors, working environment, and working conditions for mine injuries. However, there is a dearth of information about the role of some of these factors in delayed return to work (RTW) following a miner's injury. These factors may likely include personal characteristics of injured persons and his or her family, the injured person's social and economic status, and

Small airways involvement in coal mine dust lung disease.

Inhalation of coal mine dust results in a spectrum of symptoms, dysfunction, and pathological changes in the respiratory tract that collectively have been labeled coal mine dust lung disease. Recent reports from periodic health surveillance among underground and surface coal miners in the United States have demonstrated an increasing prevalence and severity of dust diseases, and have also documented that some miners experience rapid disease progression. The coal macule is an inflammatory lesion associated with deposited dust, and occurs in the region of the most distal conducting airways and p

Natural desulfurization in coal-fired units using Greek lignite.

This paper analyzes the natural desulfurization process taking place in coal-fired units using Greek lignite. The dry scrubbing capability of Greek lignite appears to be extremely high under special conditions, which can make it possible for the units to operate within the legislative limits of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. According to this study on several lignite-fired power stations in northern Greece, it was found that sulfur oxide emissions depend on coal rank, sulfur content, and calorific value. On the other hand, SO2 emission is inversely proportional to the parameter gammaCO2(max),

An association between Mycobacterium malmoense and coal workers' pneumoconiosis.

An association between Mycobacterium malmoense and underlying lung disease has been described. The purpose of this study was to further explore this relationship and in particular to identify any relationship between Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) and M. malmoense infection. Patient charts were reviewed of all patients who had a positive sputum or bronchoalveolar lavage for M. malmoense from 1999 to 2006 in a large district general hospital in South Yorkshire, UK. We also performed a literature review in search of this association; one case report was found. Four patients had positive sput
