Element composition and mineralogical characterisation of air pollution control residue from UK energy-from-waste facilities.

Air pollution control (APC) residues from energy-from-waste (EfW) are alkaline (corrosive) and contain high concentrations of metals, such as zinc and lead, and soluble salts, such as chlorides and sulphates. The EPA 3050B-extractable concentrations of 66 elements, including critical elements of strategic importance for advanced electronics and energy technologies, were determined in eight APC residues from six UK EfW facilities. The concentrations of Ag (6-15 mg/kg) and In (1-13 mg/kg), as well as potential pollutants, especially Zn (0.26-0.73 wt.%), Pb (0.05-0.2 wt.%), As, Cd, Cu, Mo, Sb, Sn

Removal of chloride from MSWI fly ash.

The high levels of alkali chloride and soluble metal salts present in MSWI fly ash is worth noting for their impact on the environment. In addition, the recycling or reuse of fly ash has become an issue because of limited landfill space. The chloride content in fly ash limits its application as basis for construction materials. Water-soluble chlorides such as potassium chloride (KCl), sodium chloride (NaCl), and calcium chloride hydrate (CaCl(2) · 2H(2)O) in fly ash are easily washed away. However, calcium chloride hydroxide (Ca(OH)Cl) might not be easy to leach away at room temperature. The r

Alkali-activated concrete with Serbian fly ash and its radiological impact.

The present paper reports the results of a study on different types of fly ash from Serbian coal burning power plants and their potential use as a binder in alkali-activated concrete (AAC) depending on their radiological and mechanical properties. Five AAC mixtures with different types of coal burning fly ash and one type of blast furnace slag were designed. Measurements of the activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th were done both on concrete constituents (fly ash, blast furnace slag and aggregate) and on the five solid AAC samples. Experimental results were compared by using the acti

An efficient calcium-based sorbent for flue gas dry-desulfurization: promotion roles of nitrogen oxide and oxygen.

The development of sorbents for flue gas desulfurization in a dry mode is essential to control emission of sulfur dioxide. Based on the novel concept of "treating waste with waste", a low-cost and highly activated calcium-based sorbent (ACS) was prepared using coal fly ash, CaO and waste gypsum as the raw materials via the one-step incipient wetness impregnation method. Based on characterization using scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption, the ACS possessed a fibrous and netted structure with high porosity, which improved SO2 adsorption greatly. The SO2 adsorption cap

Chemical Characteristics of Coal in the Yili Basin and Its Corrosion Mechanism on Gasifiers.

The reaction environment within a gasifier is highly complex, and understanding this process is critical for elucidating the corrosion mechanisms of the gasifier. To investigate the corrosion induced by feed coal on gasifier, coal and slag samples were collected from major coal mines and two typical coal chemical enterprises (hereinafter referred to as "Enterprise A and B") in the Yili Basin. These samples were analyzed by element analyzer, X-ray fluorescence, and fluorine chlorine tester. The results show that coals from the Yili Basin are characterized by low to medium ash and low sulfur con

Active methods of mercury removal from flue gases.

Due to its adverse impact on health, as well as its global distribution, long atmospheric lifetime and propensity for deposition in the aquatic environment and in living tissue, the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has classified mercury and its compounds as a severe air quality threat. Such widespread presence of mercury in the environment originates from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Global anthropogenic emission of mercury is evaluated at 2000 Mg year-1. According to the National Centre for Emissions Management (Pol. KOBiZE) report for 2014, Polish annual mercury emissi

Valorization of pyrolysis oils recycled from waste car tires as potential collector in coal flotation: Production, characterization, and collecting mechanism.

The present research study investigates the performance of pyrolysis oils recycled from waste tires as a collector in coal flotation. Three different types of pyrolysis oils (namely, POT1, POT2, and POT3) were produced through a two-step pressure pyrolysis method followed by an oil rolling process. The characteristics of POTs were adjusted using various oil-modifying additives such as mineral salts and organic solvents. The chemical structure of POTs was explored by employing necessary instrumental analysis techniques, including microwave-assisted acid digestion (MAD), inductively coupled plas

Effect of carbon residues structures on burnout characteristic by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy.

Fly ash (-FA) from seven typical power plants in Shanxi province (North China) were collected to explore the effect of carbon residues (-CR) structures on their burnout characteristic. Burnout characteristic is expressed by the loss on ignition (LOI) content in fly ash. Raman spectroscopy and Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy are used to characterize the structure of CR. The structure parameters include Raman parameter (the full width at half maxima (FWHM) ratio of D1 and G, ID1/IG) and FTIR parameter (asymmetric stretching intensity ratio of CH2 and CH3 groups, A(CH2)/A(CH3)). Clarifying source attribution and the scope of health-risk conclusions for rare earth elements in road dust near coal-fired power plants.

The study by Roganović et al. (2025) is, to our knowledge, the first to use road dust to examine rare earth elements in the vicinity of coal-fired thermal power plants and an associated coal-mining area. It reports a pronounced temporal enrichment of dysprosium and evaluates non-carcinogenic hazard through the ingestion pathway. The dataset and the spatial and temporal patterns it documents are a useful contribution to a topic that has received little attention. In this letter we do not question the reported concentrations, the observed patterns, or an appropriately qualified screening-level a

Mercury oxidation promoted by a selective catalytic reduction catalyst under simulated Powder River Basin coal combustion conditions.

A bench-scale reactor consisting of a natural gas burner and an electrically heated reactor housing a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst was constructed for studying elemental mercury (Hg(o)) oxidation under SCR conditions. A low sulfur Powder River Basin (PRB) subbituminous coal combustion fly ash was injected into the entrained-flow reactor along with sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrogen chloride (HCl), and trace Hg(o). Concentrations of Hg(o) and total mercury (Hg) upstream and downstream of the SCR catalyst were measured using a Hg monitor. The effects of HCl con

Trace elements in two pulverized coal-fired power stations.

Beside major pollutants (particulates, carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen oxides), coal combustion generates emissions of potentially toxic trace elements. The current work focuses on predicting the fate of eight trace elements (As, Cd, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, V, and Zn) in power stations that fire pulverized coal and are equipped with flue gas scrubbers. The core of the study is global equilibrium analysis carried out with the aid of three extensive databases. The first set of equilibrium constants describes conditions prevailing in the furnace and the flue gas duct, while the second set describes reaction

Study on Thermodynamic Characteristics and Heat Transfer Method of Uncontrolled Fire in Coal Mine Gangue Mountain Spontaneous Combustion Based on System Dynamics.

Coal fire disaster caused by the spontaneous combustion of coal has always been one of the serious problems that threaten the safety of coal mining. In our study, we first solved the dynamic parameters and mechanical functions of coal gangue using the Achar differential method and Coats-Redfern integral method. Then, based on the flow and heat transfer mechanism of hot rod vapor-liquid two-phase flow, combined with coal spontaneous ignition conditions, influencing factors, coal pile spontaneous combustion temperature field structure distribution, etc., the heat transfer process of the hot rod

Experimental Study on Catalytic Action of Intrinsic Metals in Coal Spontaneous Combustion.

In order to study the effect of inherent metals in coal on spontaneous combustion, Hongmiao lignite and Hongqingliang long-flame coal were demineralized by hydrochloric acid, the raw coal and demineralized coal were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and synchronous thermal analysis experiments, and the corresponding ash content was detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The results show that the effect of demineralization on the volatile matter of low-rank coal is small, and the change of crystallite structure is not significant. Th

Performance assessment of reclaimed fly ash-slag geopolymers incorporating waste spent garnet and waste foundry sand under different curing regimes.

Fly ash (FA) landfills are overflowing with materials, and unexplored waste streams like waste spent garnet (WSG) and waste foundry sand (WFS) are often dumped in onsite storage spaces, limiting land availability for future use and exacerbating environmental concerns related to waste disposal. Therefore, this research proposes recycling FA to produce reclaimed FA (RFA) as a binder, replacing 40-60 % of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and 30-50 % of river sand (RS) with WSG and WFS to produce geopolymers. The performance of geopolymers was assessed under different curing regimes, i

Environmental investigation on the use of a phosphogypsum-based road material: Radiological and leaching assessment.

The transformation of phosphate ore into phosphoric acid results in the generation of high volumes of phosphogypsum (PG), an industrial by-product largely stockpiled worldwide. This solution, considered as the least damaging to the environment, constitutes a risk for the receiving environment due to the presence of harmful impurities such as heavy metals and radionuclides which hinder its large-scale valorization. This paper presents an environmental characterization of Moroccan phosphogypsum and an investigation on the environmental performance of a new lime (L) - fly ash (FA) treated phospho

Study on the ecological risk of heavy metals during oily sludge incineration with CaO additive.

In order to explore the effect of CaO on the ecological risk of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in Oily sludge (OS), the incineration experiments of OS with and without calcium oxide (CaO) additive were carried out respectively in a horizontal tube furnace at the temperature ranging from 800 °C to 1000 °C. Furthermore, the ecological risk based on Risk Assessment Code (RAC) of Cr, Cu and Zn in OS, bottom ash from OS incineration (OSA) and bottom ash from OS incineration in the presence of CaO additive (OSA-CaO) were investigated in this work. The results showed that most of the Cr and

Thermochemical treatment of sewage sludge ash with sodium salt additives for phosphorus fertilizer production--Analysis of underlying chemical reactions.

Stocks of high grade phosphate rock are becoming scarce, and there is growing concern about potentially harmful impurities in conventional phosphorus fertilizers. Sewage sludge ash is a promising secondary phosphorus source. However, to remove heavy metals and convert the phosphorus contained in sewage sludge ash into mineral phases available to plants, an after-treatment is required. Laboratory-scale calcination experiments of sewage sludge ash blended with sodium salts using dried sewage sludge as a reducing agent were carried out at 1000°C. Thus, the Ca3(PO4)2 or whitlockite component of ra

Mobility of as, Cu, Cr, and Zn from tailings covered with sealing materials using alkaline industrial residues: a comparison between two leaching methods.

Different alkaline residue materials (fly ash, green liquor dregs, and lime mud) generated from the pulp and paper industry as sealing materials were evaluated to cover aged mine waste tailings (<1% sulfur content, primarily pyrite). The mobility of four selected trace elements (Cr, Cu, Zn, and As) was compared based on batch and column leaching studies to assess the effectiveness of these alkaline materials as sealing agents. Based on the leaching results, Cr, Cu, and Zn were immobilized by the alkaline amendments. In the amended tailings in the batch system only As dramatically exceeded the

Solvent extraction separation of copper and zinc from MSWI fly ash leachates.

Fly ash from combustion of municipal solid waste (MSW) contains significant amounts of metals, some of which are valuable and some of which are potentially toxic. This type of ash is most often stabilized and landfilled which means that the metals will be difficult to reclaim at a later stage. In recent years efforts have been made to develop feasible methods to recover selected metals, such as Zn, from MSW fly ash. If this would be possible, a significant amount of valuable metals could be re-inserted in the industrial material loops. This paper describes the development and evaluation of a p
