Implicit and explicit self-esteem discrepancies in people with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.

PURPOSE: Self-esteem (SE), or one's sense of competence and worth, is reduced in many mental and physical disorders. Low SE is associated with perceived stigma and disability and poor treatment outcomes. The present study examined implicit and explicit SE (automatic and deliberate views about the self) in people with epilepsy and people with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNESs). Discrepancies between implicit SE and explicit SE have been found to correlate with psychological distress in disorders often associated with PNESs but are relatively unexplored in PNESs. We hypothesized that, com

Providing Adaptation Solutions to the Problems Faced by Adoptive Families.

BACKGROUND: Adoption is frequently viewed as a way to complete the family because of the infertility that some families experience and the desire for kids and teenagers, especially orphans, to have a loving family. AIMS: This work intends to identify and propose adaptation solutions to address the psychological problems faced by adoptive families. By doing so, it is hoped that the mental health and overall well-being of individuals and society as a whole will be enhanced. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the first stage of this study, the grounded theory approach based on Strauss and Corbin's metho

Barriers Associated with Help-Seeking for Stroke Symptoms Despite Public Awareness Campaigns: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The nationally advertised mass media campaign Act-FAST UK, delivered in multiple waves since its launch in 2009, has increased public awareness of stroke symptoms. However, many stroke patients still delay in calling for help and reach the hospital too late to receive emergency treatments. The reasons for this cognitive dissonance between recognition of symptoms and urgent seeking of emergency medical services (EMS) are unclear. AIMS: This study aimed to quantify cognitive, psychological, and knowledge-based barriers to help-seeking in patients with acute stroke or transient ischa

Financial conflicts of interest in science.

This Article proposes a new direction for addressing financial conflicts of interest, which plague biomedical research and threaten scientific integrity. This Article descriptively states the controversy surrounding financial conflicts of interest by explaining how these conflicts arise and the damage that can be created as a result. By describing the scientific process, the Article explains that changes to the academic environment may allow the public-private interaction to proceed, without creating the problems associated with financial conflicts of interest. Financial conflicts of interest

Factors that affect the outcomes of root canal treatment and retreatment-A reframing of the principles.

This paper undertakes a broad and comprehensive synthesis of relevant clinical, biological, biomechanical, technical and healthcare services data to understand the factors affecting outcomes of periapical healing after root canal (re)treatment. The medical and dental evidence-based era (1980-present) is contextualized with the earlier evidence drive in endodontics (1911-1940) triggered by the focal infection era. The current evidence-based approach has a sharper focus on evidence quality and derivation of practice guidelines. Contrary views question whether guideline-driven, or expertise-devel

Effect of persuasive messages on National Health Service Organ Donor Registrations: a pragmatic quasi-randomised controlled trial with one million UK road taxpayers.

BACKGROUND: A shortage of organs available for transplantation is causing loss of life. Increasing the number of individuals on the National Health Service (NHS) Organ Donor Register (ODR) is one way to address the shortage of organs. In Great Britain, new drivers registering for their driving licence are invited to join the ODR. A further 17 million drivers renew their road tax online each year, presenting an additional opportunity to prompt drivers to join the ODR. This trial explores the effect of adding persuasive messages to a prompt to join the ODR at the end of road tax payment transact

Evaluating the implementation of the Diabetes Body Project in a clinical cohort of Australian adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are at increased risk of disordered eating behaviors (DEB) and eating disorders (ED) compared to their peers without T1D, contributing to increased diabetes-related complications, and elevated mortality risk. Despite this, there is a lack of targeted ED prevention interventions specifically designed for adolescents with T1D, within routine clinical care. The Diabetes Body Project (DBP) has demonstrated promising feasibility, acceptability, and reduction of DEB in young adults; however, its application in younger adolescents and real-world cl

The impacts of a justice-focused body image program for early adolescents.

To address gaps in universal, diversity-focused eating disorders prevention with early adolescents, our team co-created an evidence-informed body image intervention through a community-engaged, participatory research process. The Body Justice intervention and associated research were co-created by a team of middle school students and staff and undergraduate students and faculty in the Pacific Northwest United States. The intervention includes eight brief lessons (six hours total) with culturally-tailored content rooted in cognitive dissonance and media literacy (e.g., cultural appearance ideal

Severe severe psychological repulsion reaction in patient with PAD resulted in natural lower extremity mummification.

This case report describes the very uncommon event of mummification of the lower limb occurring naturally in a patient with peripheral arterial occlusive disease aggravated by severe reactive aversion and serves as a warning that this can happen in cases of untreated advanced critical limb ischemia even in well developed countries.

How fat will it make me? Estimation of weight gain in anorexia nervosa.

This study investigates the subjective estimation of weight gain in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) when being confronted with food cues both in a general (self-unrelated) and in an intent-to-eat (self-related) condition. Looking at the presentation of different snack pictures with different nutrition values (high-low calories), AN patients (N = 24) and age-matched healthy women (N = 27) estimated the weight gain when they imagined eating the presented portions of snack pictures once a day in addition to the normal daily nutrition in the following two conditions: 1) a general condition wit

Mental health issues and associated factors amongst healthcare workers in US forensic-correctional settings: a systematic review of literature since the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals provide essential services to populations in the criminal justice system, often at the expense of their own well-being. This review synthesized literature findings on mental health challenges faced by healthcare professionals working in the US forensic-correctional settings since the COVID-19 pandemic. We investigated the prevalence of mental health conditions, their risk-protective factors, the impacts of these mental health issues on workplace retention, and highlighted relevant recommendations. METHODS: This study followed PRISMA guidelines. A comprehen

Lessons in clinical reasoning - pitfalls, myths, and pearls: a woman brought to a halt.

OBJECTIVES: Limitations in human cognition commonly result in clinical reasoning failures that can lead to diagnostic errors. A metacognitive structured reflection on what clinical findings fit and/or do not fit with a diagnosis, as well as how discordance of data can help advance the reasoning process, may reduce such errors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old woman with Hashimoto thyroiditis, diabetes, and generalized anxiety disorder presented with diffuse arthralgias and myalgias. She had been evaluated by physicians of various specialties and undergone multiple modalities of imaging, as we

Transgender identity development as represented by a group of female-to-male transgendered adults.

This article represents work done in the discipline of nursing to raise awareness about the lives and experiences of transgendered persons, who receive little coverage in our nursing textbooks, professional journals, or student clinical experiences. The findings presented here are from a larger qualitative examination of the lives and experiences of a group of 11 transgendered adults that examined four broad areas: transgender identity recognition, acknowledgement, and development; bodily experiences; relationships with others; and health care experiences. The focus of this article is the rele

Prestimulus Low-Alpha Frontal Networks Are Associated with Pareidolias in Parkinson's Disease.

Background: Pareidolias are visual phenomena wherein ambiguous, abstract forms or shapes appear meaningful due to incorrect perception. In Parkinson's disease (PD), patients susceptible to visual hallucinations experience visuo-perceptual deficits in the form of pareidolias. Although pareidolias necessitate top-down modulation of visual processing, the cortical dynamics of internally generated perceptual priors on these visual misperceptions is unknown. Objectives: To study prestimulus-related electroencephalography (EEG) spectral and network abnormalities in PD patients experiencing pareidoli

Why Are You Keeping a Brachycephalic Dog? Insights from Interviews with Brachycephalic-Dog Owners.

Despite increasing efforts by the scientific community to raise awareness of breed-related health problems through educational campaigns, public information initiatives, and veterinary outreach programmes, brachycephalic dog breeds remain highly popular. As the number of brachycephalic dogs increases, the prevalence of associated health problems rises accordingly. Ethical and animal welfare considerations appear to play a limited role in breed selection. In German-speaking regions, extensive educational efforts have been undertaken in recent years to address the issue of so-called torture bree
