Exploring the Semantic Structure of WMS-IV Verbal Paired Associates using the Hub-and-Spoke Model.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify a well-fitting and theoretically justified item-level latent factor structure for the Wechsler Memory Scales (WMS)-IV verbal paired associates (VerbalPA) subtest to facilitate the ease and accuracy of score interpretations for patients with lateralized temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). METHODS: Archival data were used from 250 heterogeneous neurosciences patients who were administered the WMS-IV as part of a standard neuropsychological assessment. Three theoretically motivated models for the latent structure of VerbalPA were tested using confirmatory facto

Neuroeducation and Genetics.

Nowadays, more and more educators are turning to neuroscience to be able to discover how children's brains and cognitive development are shaped by their learning experiences. This article discusses the link between neuroeducation and genetics. Several learning disabilities arise from specific genetic characteristics. The contribution of neuroscience is remarkable as it helps to understand the working mechanisms and organization of the brain, from the nerve cell to the integrated nervous system, to bridge the organic bases of behavior with their potential applications. In addition, research in

Refining mechanistic models of hallucinations for enhanced translatability.

Over the past two decades, foundational work has provided key insights into the cognitive and neural basis of hallucinations. This progress has led to the development of several families of theories, each of which propose that hallucinations arise from distinct cognitive mechanisms. Since these cognitive mechanisms likely map onto separate circuit-level implementations, arbitrating between them is critical to advance our understanding of hallucination pathophysiology and guide the development of novel targeted therapeutics. However, several obstacles have hindered this progress, including the

Updated perspectives on awake neurosurgery with cognitive and emotional assessment for patients with low-grade gliomas.

Introduction: Thanks to early extensive surgical resection combined with medical oncological therapies, life expectancy dramatically increased in low-grade glioma (LGG), with an overall survival currently over 15 years. Therefore, patients should be able to maintain valuable family and socio-professional activities.Areas covered: For many decades, cognitive and emotional aspects were neglected by surgical and medical neurooncologists. The goal of surgery was to avoid hemiplegia and/or aphasia, with no considerations regarding behavior. However, because LGG patients live longer, they must be co

The 'I' of the beholder: studying the 'self' across the humanities and neuroscience.

Long debated within the humanistic tradition, the concept of 'self' has recently been embraced as a subject of investigation by cognitive neuroscience. Tracing parallels between ancient philosophical ideas and current-day scientific research on the 'self', the author proposes that contemporary knowledge based on empirical neuroscientific evidence may inform novel perspectives on-and draw inspiration from-notions grounded in ancient intuitions and traditionally falling within humanistic fields of enquiry. Further, the author suggests that the 'self', as a major object of philosophical and psych

Evaluating the neuropsychological dissociation evidence for multiple memory systems.

This article presents a critical evaluation of the logic and nature of the neuropsychological dissociation evidence that has provided one of the essential lines of support for claims of multiple memory systems--specifically, suggesting that amnesia selectively compromises, and an intact hippocampal system selectively supports, a particular form of memory. An analysis of the existing neuropsychological dissociation evidence is offered in which different classes of evidence--different dissociation approaches-are identified and characterized. The logic of these neuropsychological dissociation app

Real-world applications in vision and attention: How to help patients find their (golf) balls again.

The loss of visual function is a common and debilitating effect of brain injury. Such effects include the inability to attend to the contralesional part of space (visual neglect) and loss of vision in part of the visual field in both eyes (homonymous visual field defects). The underlying mechanism of these functional deficits are varied which explains why no one intervention is effective in their treatment. In this chapter, we examine the cognitive neuroscience that underlies visual performance and attention with particular focus on what we know about visual exploration using search tasks in t

Virtual reality modulating dynamics of neuroplasticity: Innovations in neuro-motor rehabilitation.

Virtual reality (VR) technology has emerged as a ground-breaking tool in neuroscience, revolutionizing our understanding of neuroplasticity and its implications for neurological rehabilitation. By immersing individuals in simulated environments, VR induces profound neurobiological transformations, affecting neuronal connectivity, sensory feedback mechanisms, motor learning processes, and cognitive functions. These changes highlight the dynamic interplay between molecular events, synaptic adaptations, and neural reorganization, emphasizing the potential of VR as a therapeutic intervention in va

EEG as a neural measure of hypoxia-related impairment.

Ambient oxygen decreases with increasing altitude, which poses a primary threat to aviators known as hypoxic hypoxia. Decades of research have shown that hypoxia impairs cognition, but the neurophysiological bases for these effects remain poorly understood. Recent advances in neuroscience have permitted non-invasive observation of neural activity under controlled hypoxia exposures and have begun to uncover how the brain responds to hypoxia. Electroencephalography (EEG) in particular has been used to explore how electrical activity produced by networks of cortical neurons changes under hypoxia.

Cerebellar contributions to orthographic working memory: A single case cognitive neuropsychological investigation.

Single case cognitive neuropsychological investigations involve the precise characterization of cognitive impairment at the level of an individual participant. This deep data precision affords a more fine-grained understanding of the cognitive and neural underpinnings of complex tasks, and continues to provide unique insights that inform theory in cognitive neuroscience. Here, we present a single case study of an individual, F.R., who suffered a stroke that led to chronic reading and writing problems that include an impairment to the orthographic working memory system proposed to be involved i

Characteristics of the top 100 cited electroencephalography articles on aging: a bibliometric analysis.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a widely used tool in neuroscience. To explore the features of the top 100 cited articles related to EEG and aging over the past decade, we conducted a bibliometric analysis using Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) data as of January 21, 2024. The selected top 100 cited papers were analyzed using VOSviewer and Excel. We examined the distribution of publication years, authors, institutions, countries/regions, and journals. Hotspots were identified through keyword analysis. The analyzed articles were published between 2014 and 2021, with the majority being pub

Trends in big data analyses by multicenter collaborative translational research in psychiatry.

The underlying pathologies of psychiatric disorders, which cause substantial personal and social losses, remain unknown, and their elucidation is an urgent issue. To clarify the core pathological mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders, in addition to laboratory-based research that incorporates the latest findings, it is necessary to conduct large-sample-size research and verify reproducibility. For this purpose, it is critical to conduct multicenter collaborative research across various fields, such as psychiatry, neuroscience, molecular biology, genomics, neuroimaging, cognitive science,

Towards naturalistic social neuroscience: A multi-level framework integrating real-world phenotyping, neurobiology, and computational mechanisms.

Humans are inherently social species. Our behavior is heavily influenced by the social environment and context. While the traditional social neuroscience approach has made significant progress in mapping isolated social cognitive processes, it often fails to capture the complexity of real-world social environment-where perception, decision-making, and interaction unfold simultaneously and contextually. In this review, we introduce naturalistic social neuroscience as a paradigm shift that bridges this gap through incorporating multidisciplinary naturalistic measurements, which integrates lab-ba

Human mating strategies: from past causes to present consequences.

In both humans and nonhuman animals, mating strategies represent a set of evolutionary adaptations aimed at promoting individual fitness by means of reproduction with the best possible partners. Given this critical role, mating strategies influence numerous aspects of human life. In particular, between-sex divergence in the intensity of intrasexual competition could account for robust cross-cultural sex differences in psychology and behavior (e.g., personality, psychiatric disorders, social behavior, violence). Several other factors (including individual differences, relationship type and envi

Transcranial electric stimulation as a neural interface to gain insight on human brain functions: current knowledge and future perspective.

The use of brain stimulation approaches in social and affective science has greatly increased over the last two decades. The interest in social factors has grown along with technological advances in brain research. Transcranial electric stimulation (tES) is a research tool that allows scientists to establish contributory causality between brain functioning and social behaviour, therefore deepening our understanding of the social mind. Preliminary evidence is also starting to demonstrate that tES, either alone or in combination with pharmacological or behavioural interventions, can alleviate th

Reproducibility of Brain Responses: High for Speech Perception, Low for Reading Difficulties.

Neuroscience findings have recently received critique on the lack of replications. To examine the reproducibility of brain indices of speech sound discrimination and their role in dyslexia, a specific reading difficulty, brain event-related potentials using EEG were measured using the same cross-linguistic passive oddball paradigm in about 200 dyslexics and 200 typically reading 8-12-year-old children from four countries with different native languages. Brain responses indexing speech and non-speech sound discrimination were extremely reproducible, supporting the validity and reliability of co

APOE ε4 positivity predicts centrality of episodic memory nodes in patients with mild cognitive impairment: A cohort-based, graph theory-informed study of cognitive networks.

As network neuroscience can capture the systemic impact of APOE variability at a neuroimaging level, this study investigated the network-based cognitive endophenotypes of ε4-carriers and non-carriers across the continuum between normal ageing and Alzheimer's dementia (AD). We hypothesised that the impact of APOE-ε4 on cognitive functioning can be reliably captured by the measurement of graph-theory centrality. Cognitive networks were calculated in 8118 controls, 3482 MCI patients and 4573 AD patients, recruited in the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) database. Nodal centrality w

Mechanistic computational models of cognition across scales and species.

How can theory and mathematical modeling help accelerate research in psychiatry? Here we highlight the promise of computational approaches via three recent trends: multi-scale models of working memory which link receptors and cell-types to brain-wide activity and behavior; the extension of mechanistic computational models from working memory to other cognitive functions including conscious perception, attention and planning; and cross-species comparative models of cognition that give rise to translational computational neuroscience. These developments demonstrate the feasibility of achieving u

Brás Cubas, Quincas Borba, and Rubião: portraits of neuropsychiatry in the novels of Machado de Assis.

The intersection of literature and neuroscience provides a fascinating way to explore human behavior through fictional narratives. Brazilian literature, particularly the work of Machado de Assis, excels in portraying characters with neuropsychiatric conditions. This work aims to establish connections between the fictional representations of human behavior in Machado's classic works and neurological conditions described by contemporary neuroscience. In The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas and Quincas Borba, Machado's characters exhibit behaviors that align with modern neurological diagnoses. Fo
