Who Falls for Misinformation and Why?

Misinformation is widespread, but only some people accept the false information they encounter. This raises two questions: Who falls for misinformation, and why do they fall for misinformation? To address these questions, two studies investigated associations between 15 individual-difference dimensions and judgments of misinformation as true. Using Signal Detection Theory, the studies further investigated whether the obtained associations are driven by individual differences in truth sensitivity, acceptance threshold, or myside bias. For both political misinformation (Study 1) and misinformati

I Might Be Wrong: The Role of Intellectual Humility in Debiasing Surgical Education.

Surgical training has long valued decisiveness, technical excellence, and confidence. However, complex patient care also exposes surgeons and trainees to cognitive traps such as anchoring, confirmation bias, overconfidence, premature closure, and diagnosis momentum. This editorial argues that intellectual humility is not only an educational virtue but also a psychological precondition for debiasing. It situates intellectual humility within the broader literature on cognitive bias and debiasing, and then proposes a practical reflection scaffold organized around claims, warrants, disconfirming e

Evaluating effect of implementing Gibbs' reflective model on quality of nurses' documentation in emergency departments: a clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Emergency nurses are responsible for providing and documenting immediate patient care. Documentation is a fundamental component of their professional practice; however, evidence indicates that documentation standards are often not adequately met. Therefore, innovative training approaches should be employed to improve the quality of nurses' documentation. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of implementing Gibbs' reflective model on the quality of documentation by emergency department nurses. METHODS: This cluster-randomized clinical trial was conducted on 68 nurses worki

Adult attachment insecurity and uncertain reflective functioning as mediators between traumatic experiences and alexithymia in young adults: a structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia concerns a difficulty identifying, describing, and valuing feelings, and is regarded as a transdiagnostic dimensional construct, expressed at different levels in both non-clinical and clinical populations. Despite evidence supporting the relationship between traumatic experiences, adult attachment insecurity, uncertain reflective functioning, and alexithymia, there is a need to model their relationships to inform research, preventative actions, and clinical practice. Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of adult attachment insecurity (M1) an

A critical reflection on community engagement in health equity research: translating principles into practice, navigating barriers, and compiling transferable lessons.

BACKGROUND: Community and stakeholder engagement is widely recognized as essential for equity-oriented health research, yet evidence on how engagement principles are enacted within stratified contexts remains limited. Existing studies often emphasize participatory processes without examining how institutional conditions shape engagement quality and outcomes. Empirical analyses linking engagement practice to equity-relevant research effects are needed. AIM: This study examined how principles of inclusivity, reciprocity, social justice, and reflexivity were operationalized within a community-en

Culturally Safe Nursing: Transformative Learning Experiences Through Critical Reflection Assessment.

AIM: To explore the transformative learning experiences of postgraduate nursing students engaging in an Aboriginal culture and history module, through an analysis of a critical reflection assessment, in particular the student development of cultural awareness and culturally safe practice. BACKGROUND: Despite mandated inclusion of Aboriginal cultural content in Australian nursing curricula, culturally unsafe practices and racism persist. Transformative learning, underpinned by critical reflection, can challenge fixed assumptions and promote cultural awareness and culturally safe care. DESIGN:

The effects of mindfulness-based techniques on self-rumination, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression among patients with major depression: a nursing perspective.

BACKGROUND: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) often struggle with adaptive strategies like self-reflection and cognitive reappraisal, relying instead on maladaptive ones like self-rumination and emotional suppression. Mindfulness-based techniques (MBTs) have been identified as a promising complementary psychological intervention for this population. AIMS: To evaluate the effects of MBTs on mindful attention awareness, self-rumination, self-reflection, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression in patients with MDD between patients who receive MBTs and those who do not. Distinguishing worry from rumination in older people: a preliminary investigation.

Anxiety and depression are common mental health problems in later life. Since worry and rumination are thought to underpin the respective primary cognitive processes in anxiety and depression, we developed a measure to distinguish worry from rumination in later life. The Ruminative Response Scale was adapted to include items that characterise the cognitive features of worry. We examined its properties using 92 clinical and non-clinical participants, aged over 65. Factor analysis demonstrated a three-factor structure: brooding, reflection and worry with internal consistencies of alpha = 0.72, a

Brooding and reflection: rumination predicts suicidal ideation at 1-year follow-up in a community sample.

The cognitive processes underlying suicidal thinking and behavior are not well understood. The present study examined brooding and reflection, two dimensions of rumination, as predictors of suicidal ideation among a community sample of 1134 adults. Participants completed self-report measures of rumination and depression, and a semi-structured clinical interview that included an assessment of suicidal ideation, at baseline and 1-year follow-up. Brooding was more strongly related to degree of ideation at baseline than was reflection. However, both brooding and reflection predicted whether an ind

The Effect of Enumeration of Self-Relevant Words on Self-Focused Attention and Repetitive Negative Thoughts.

Self-focused attention refers to awareness of self-referent, internally generated information. It can be categorized into dysfunctional (i.e., self-rumination) and functional (self-reflection) aspects. According to theory on cognitive resource limitations (e.g., Moreno, 2006), there is a difference in cognitive resource allocation between these two aspects of self-focused attention. We propose a new task, self-relevant word (SRW) enumeration, that can aid in behaviorally identifying individuals' use of self-rumination and self-reflection. The present study has two purposes: to determine the as

Exhibiting failure toward building a growth mindset: a qualitative study of psychiatric trainees' experiences of a monthly reflective session.

BACKGROUND: Medical trainees frequently encounter academic, clinical, and personal setbacks, yet these experiences are often concealed due to fear of judgment and stigma. Providing a structured, psychologically safe space to share failures may help normalize setbacks, reduce shame, and foster a growth mindset. This study explored psychiatric trainees' experiences of the "Exhibition of Failure," a monthly reflective session designed to support open discussion of failure and promote personal and professional development. METHODS: The Exhibition of Failure was held monthly over one academic year

Ruminative subtypes and impulsivity in risk for suicidal behavior.

Rumination has been previously linked to negative psychological outcomes, including depression and suicidal behavior. However, there has been conflicting research on whether or not two different subtypes of rumination - brooding and reflection - are more or less maladaptive. The present research sought to (1) examine whether individuals high in brooding but lower in reflection would show higher trait and behavioral impulsivity, relative to individuals low in brooding and low in reflection; and (2) examine impulsivity as a mediator of the relation between ruminative subtypes and suicidal ideati

Brooding rumination predicts lower cognitive functioning in late-life depression: multivariate multiple regression analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Late-life depression (LLD) is associated with cognitive deficits, particularly in memory and executive functions. Rumination, namely brooding, may also negatively impact cognition. Few studies have investigated multivariate relationships between depressive symptoms and different types of rumination on cognition in LLD, which was the focus of the current study. We also explored whether relationships differed by gender and depression age of onset. METHOD: Cognition was measured via five cognitive composites (Attention/Working Memory, Processing Speed, Language, Episodic Recall, an

Understanding Within-Session Loss-Chasing: An Experimental Investigation of the Impact of Stake Size on Cognitive Control.

Loss-chasing is a central feature of problematic gambling, yet it remains a poorly conceived and understood concept. Loss-chasing is believed to stem from an erosion of cognitive control when gambling. The opportunity to gamble at significantly disparate stake sizes on a gambling activity is considered to be a risk factor for loss-chasing. This study investigated the impact of gambling at disparate stake sizes on executive processes integral to maintaining cognitive control when gambling, namely response inhibition and reflection impulsivity. Frequent adult non-problem gamblers (n = 32) partic

The Relationship Between Depression and Coping Insight Dimensions in the Transition to Motherhood.

The transition to motherhood is a period of psychological vulnerability but also offers important opportunities to refine and strengthen resilience capacities that support long-term mental health. The Systematic Self-Reflection Model of Resilience Strengthening proposes dynamic, reciprocal relationships between self-reflection, coping insight, and capacities for resilience, but this model has not been tested during the transition to motherhood. We aimed to clarify: (i) how self-reflection and coping insight change across this life transition, and (ii) to examine the relationships among self-re

Reflective and brooding rumination as moderators of the associations between positive and negative social media experiences, depressed and anxious mood, and positive and negative affect among Hispanic adults: A daily diary approach.

INTRODUCTION: Beyond the frequency of social media use, the valence of social media experiences is important to consider. The current study examined how positive and negative social media experiences associate with mental health and well-being-related outcomes while also assessing how reflective and brooding rumination may moderate these associations given the role of rumination in mood, affect, and social experiences. Investigation among Hispanic groups is crucial as Hispanics report non-trivial rates of social media use and depressive and anxiety symptoms. METHOD: Seventy-five Hispanic adul
