BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments, prevalent in 75-80% of schizophrenia patients, severely impact rehabilitation and quality of life. Current therapies, including antipsychotics, have limited success in addressing these deficits. Virtual reality (VR) offers a promising avenue for cognitive training by providing realistic, interactive scenarios for skill application.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the efficacy of a novel VR-based cognitive training intervention in improving cognitive deficits in schizophrenia compared to standard treatment as usual (TAU).
METHODS: A randomized clinical trial

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive cognitive remediation improves cognitive and functional outcomes in people with serious mental illness, but the specific components required for effective programs are uncertain. The most common methods to improve cognition are facilitated computerized cognitive training with coaching and teaching cognitive self-management strategies. We compared these methods by dismantling the Thinking Skills for Work program, a comprehensive, validated cognitive remediation program that incorporates both strategies.
METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial we assigned 203 unemplo

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is associated with long-term disability that results in the deterioration of both the social and professional status of individuals with schizophrenia. The impact of antipsychotic therapy on cognitive function is insufficient. Cognitive training is therefore proposed as a tool for cognitive rehabilitation in schizophrenia. In this study we investigated the effect of self-administered cognitive training using a smartphone-based application on the cognitive function of paranoid schizophrenia patients focusing on response time, correct answer rate, incorrect answe

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and adaptive working memory (WM) training are promising cognitive enhancement approaches; however, their neural mechanisms and potential synergies remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: We directly compared how tDCS and WM training modulate neural oscillations during WM performance and examined whether combining both interventions produces additive effects.
METHODS: We randomized 112 healthy adults into four groups: control (sham tDCS + non-adaptive 1-back), tDCS-only (active tDCS + non-adaptive 1-back), training-only (sham tDCS + adap

The metabolites produced by the gut microbiota play a role in age-related cognitive decline through the gut-brain axis. Within this axis, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) permeates the intestinal epithelial barrier and enters systemic circulation, triggering inflammation in the central nervous system and ultimately leading to cognitive decline. However, it remains unclear whether exercise training's specific mechanism for delaying age-related cognitive decline is associated with TMAO regulation and inhibition of neuroinflammation. The aging rat model was established by intraperitoneal injection o

INTRODUCTION: It is unknown whether progressive resistance training (PRT) improves cognitive function in adults with cerebral small vessel disease and mild cognitive impairment (i.e., subcortical vascular cognitive impairment [SVCI]).
METHODS: We conducted a 12-month randomized trial comparing PRT versus balance and tone exercises (BAT) on the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale Cognitive Plus (ADAS-Cog-Plus).
RESULTS: Ninety-one participants were randomized (PRT = 45; BAT = 46); 76 completed the trial. Adherence was not different between groups (p = 0.18). At 12 months, PRT significantly i

BACKGROUND: In competitive sports, elite athletes demonstrate exceptional proficiency in resolving sensorimotor conflicts, exemplified by the basketball head-fake phenomenon. Whether long-term basketball training leads to adaptive cognitive control in athletes and the underlying neural mechanisms is still unclear. METHODS: Using a spatial conflict task called Swimmy and functional magnetic resonance imaging, this study investigated the brain function of 50 basketball athletes and 55 gender- and age-matched healthy controls during the Swimmy tasks. RESULTS: Our findings revealed that basketball

Cognitive impairment is a central non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), and there are no established treatments. Computerized cognitive training (CCT) is a safe and efficacious strategy but its efficacy in PD is unclear. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of CCT on cognitive, psychosocial and daily function, and assess potential effect moderators in people with PD without dementia. Randomized controlled trials of CCT were included in multivariate meta-analyses and meta-regressions. Seventeen studies (16 trials) encompassing 679 participants were included. The pooled effect of CCT re

Rett syndrome (RS) is a childhood neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a primary disturbance in neuronal development. Neurological abnormalities in RS are reflected in several behavioral and cognitive impairments such as stereotypies, loss of speech and hand skills, gait apraxia, irregular breathing with hyperventilation while awake, and frequent seizures. Cognitive training can enhance both neuropsychological and neurophysiological parameters. The aim of this study was to investigate whether behaviors and brain activity were modified by training in RS. The modifications were assessed

BACKGROUND: A majority of breast cancer (BC) survivors, particularly those treated with chemotherapy, experience long-term cognitive deficits that significantly reduce quality of life. Among the cognitive domains most commonly affected include executive functions (EF), such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, multitasking, planning, and attention. Previous studies in other populations have shown that cognitive training, a behavioral method for treating cognitive deficits, can result in significant improvements in a number of cognitive skills, including EF.

Sixty-four headache sufferers were allocated randomly to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), temporal pulse amplitude (TPA) biofeedback training, or waiting-list control. Fifty-one participants (14M/37F) completed the study, 30 with migraine and 21 with tension-type headache. Treatment consisted of 8, 1-hour sessions. CBT was highly effective, with an average reduction in headaches from pre- to posttreatment of 68%, compared with 56% for biofeedback, and 20% for the control condition. Headaches continued to decrease to 12 month follow-up for CBT. Improvement with CBT was associated with baseli

BACKGROUND: Normal aging is accompanied by cognitive decline, structural and functional brain changes. Cognitive training is a potentially effective intervention for cognitive improvement. Transfer of training gains to untrained tasks is the ultimate goal of cognitive training. However, the neural mechanisms underlying successful transfer remain underinvestigated.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the predictive role of resting-state functional connectivity in the transfer of training gains.
METHODS: We analyzed resting-state fMRI and cognitive data of 181 healthy older adults (mean age: 68 years) who u
