Background: Delayed migration and exposure of embolic coils is a rare complication of endovascular therapy for carotid blowout syndrome. Methods: A 64-year-old man with recurrent tongue cancer noticed the presence of foreign body in the malignant wound on the right side of his neck. He had undergone transarterial embolization on his right vertebral artery, right common carotid artery (CCA), and internal carotid artery (ICA) for carotid blowout syndrome 1 month prior. On physical examination, exposed spring-like metallic coils were observed, covered in brownish granulation tissue, at the bottom

In addition to well-known roles in RNA metabolism, the nucleolus and Cajal bodies (CBs), both located within the nucleus, are involved in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stress. Previously we showed that plants in which expression of the CB protein coilin is downregulated are more susceptible to certain viruses including tobacco rattle virus (TRV), suggesting a role of coilin in antiviral defence. Experiments with coilin-deficient plants and the deletion mutant of the TRV 16K protein showed that both 16K and coilin are required for restriction of systemic TRV infection. The potential mec

PURPOSE: To review the clinical outcomes of catheter-directed coil occlusion (coil occlusion) of persistently patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) at a pediatric tertiary care hospital.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients referred to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory for coil occlusion at our institution was performed. Twenty-one consecutive patients (12 female) underwent coil occlusion and follow-up between May 1995 and December 1997. We undertook PDA occlusion if: (a) the PDA narrowed to less than 4 mm on echocardiogram and (b) the minimum body weight was approximately 10 kg. Sta

Being a foreign body, intrauterine coil causes decubitus and inflammation of the adjacent tissues. Long-term carriage of the coil may give rise to endometritis, myometritis, parametritis, salpingo-oophoritis, tubo-ovarian inflammatory infiltrates. These infiltrates invade retroperitoneal pelvic fat and may obstruct pelvic ureters. Ureteral obstruction may bring about ureterohydronephrosis, pyelonephritis and renal calculi. The coil may be also responsible for chronic pyelonephritis. The authors have treated 64 females aged 18-45 years with urological complications due to intrauterine coils whi

BACKGROUND: Surgical and interventional therapy for occlusion of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in small dogs is challenging. Interventional closure of a PDA is rarely described in small dogs.
HYPOTHESIS: Transvenous single-coil occlusion of a PDA in small (≤3.0 kg) dogs is possible and safe.
ANIMALS: Twenty-one client-owned dogs with a left-to-right shunting PDA.
METHODS: Prospective clinical study. Inclusion criteria were a left-to-right shunting PDA and a body weight ≤3.0 kg. Dogs with additional congenital cardiac diseases were excluded. Without arterial access, a single detachable co

MRI with an endorectal coil gives images of the prostate gland and seminal vesicles of higher quality than any other imaging modality. The use of an endorectal coil enables us to sample stronger radiofrequency signals from the prostate gland and seminal vesicles compared to a whole-body coil. This improves the contrast resolution in MR images and may give a higher spatial resolution by use of thin slices and a smaller slice gap. Intravenous MRI contrast is not used in our standard procedure. At Haukeland University Hospital, Norway, MRI with an endorectal coil is presently used as a tool for s

This paper presents an iterative coil sensitivity estimation method for multi-coil MRI systems. The proposed method works with coil images in the magnitude image domain. It determines a region of support (RoS), a region being composed of the same type of tissues, by a region growing algorithm, which makes use of both intensities and intensity gradients of pixels. By repeating this procedure, it can determine multiple regions of support, which together cover most of the concerned image area. The union of these regions of support provides a rough estimate of the sensitivity of each coil through

Magnetically actuated miniature robots have attracted the attention of the scientific community over the past two decades, but the confined workspace of their manipulation system (typically a tri-axial coil or eight electromagnetic coils) and the low efficiency of propulsion have limited their utility. Here, we describe a highly efficient NiFe nanorod-based magnetic miniature swimmer that can be manipulated in 3D spaces using two pairs of coils placed in the x-y horizontal plane. In the new swimmer, the shape symmetry is broken along its body, and the asymmetry in magnetizations is introduced

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Delayed leukoencephalopathy is a rare complication that occurs after endovascular coiling of cerebral aneurysms. We aimed to describe a clinical picture of delayed leukoencephalopathy and explore potential associations with procedural characteristics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We considered endovascular coiling procedures for cerebral aneurysms performed between January 2006 and December 2017 in our institution with follow-up MRIs. We used logistic regression models to estimate the ORs of delayed leukoencephalopathy for each procedural characteristic.
RESULTS: We reviewe

This work describes a dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique for local scanning of the human body with use of a handheld receive coil or coil array. Real-time MRI is based on highly undersampled radial gradient-echo sequences with joint reconstructions of serial images and coil sensitivity maps by regularized nonlinear inversion (NLINV). For this proof-of-concept study, a fixed slice position and field-of-view (FOV) were predefined from the operating console, while a local receive coil (array) is moved across the body-for the sake of simplicity by the subject itself. A 76-year-old female presented with a large upper basilar artery (BA) aneurysm causing obstructive hydrocephalus after coil embolization manifesting as diplopia. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and MR angiography showed a large BA top aneurysm. Coil embolization was performed. More than 6 months after the first coil embolization, the aneurysm had re-grown and we performed a second coil embolization. Soon after that, obstructive hydrocephalus at the aqueduct of the midbrain occurred. MR imaging was performed to evaluate whether there was enough space at the prepontine cistern for a third ventri

This study evaluated the clinical and angiographic outcome of large aneurysms treated with coil embolization at an acute stage in patients with poor-grade subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Between July 1, 2001 and June 30, 2004, eight consecutive WFNS grade 5 patients with large aneurysms (15~23 mm) were treated with endovascular coil embolization within two days and followed for at least 30 months. There were three middle cerebral and five internal carotid artery aneurysms. No patients were treated by craniotomy and none survived without treatment. Two patients died of primary brain damage or ce

The spliceosome is the RNP complex than catalyses the removal of introns from the Uridine-rich small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (U snRNPs) that make up the main components of this complex. The production of these RNPs is an intricate process, involving several key stages. These include: 1) the transcription of the U snRNAs; 2) their nuclear export; 3) the cytoplasmic assembly of the U snRNP; 4) their nuclear import; 5) their processing within Cajal bodies and the nucleolus; and 6) their storage in interchromatin granule clusters (IGCs). This review focuses on each of these stages, discussing t

PURPOSE: The signal-to-noise ratio and resolution are two competing parameters for dental MRI and are highly dependent on the radiofrequency coil configuration and performance. The purpose of this work is to describe an intraoral approach for imaging teeth with the radiofrequency coil plane oriented orthogonally to the Zeeman field to use the transverse components of the B1 field for transmitting and receiving the NMR signal.
METHODS: A single loop coil with shape and size fitted to the average adult maxillary arch was built and tested with a phantom and human subjects in vivo on a whole-body

Argyrophilic grain disease (AgD) is a late-onset dementia morphologically characterized by the presence of abundant spindle-shaped argyrophilic grains (ArG) in neuronal processes and coiled bodies in oligodendrocytes. AgD changes consist of the microtubule-associated protein tau in an abnormally and hyperphosphorylated state and are mainly found in limbic regions, for example, in the hippocampus, the entorhinal and transentorhinal cortices and the amygdala. AgD shows a significant correlation with advancing age, and it became apparent from recent clinicopathological studies that it might accou

The presence of tau-positive glial inclusions has been recently found a consistent feature in the brains of patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal degeneration (CBD) and Pick's disease (PiD). These inclusions are classified based on cellular origin as tau-positive astrocytes, presumably either fibrillary or protoplasmic, coiled bodies and glial threads. Immunohistochemically, their major structural component is abnormal tau proteins, similar to those found in Alzheimer's disease. Nevertheless, their morphology, including ultrastructural profile, has been suggested to

Dementia with grains, also referred to as argyrophilic grain disease, is a morphological condition in elderly individuals histologically characterised by the widespread occurrence of minute, spindle or comma-shaped argyrophilic, tau-immunoreactive structures distinct from neuropil threads that are predominantly located in the hippocampus and related limbic areas including the amygdala. They are suggested to arise mainly in dendrites of neurons showing accumulation of hyperphosphorylated tau proteins (pretangle stage) but not necessarily forming paired helical filaments. Argyrophilic grains are

Idiopathic acquired generalized anhidrosis is a very rare disease of unknown pathogenesis. We report a 25-year-old man with acquired generalized anhidrosis due to occlusion of the coiled ducts. He did not have sweat secretion over the entire surface of the body, including the palms and soles. Sweat-inducing stimuli provoked tingling pain on the skin. Pilocarpine iontophoresis on the forearm did not induce sweat secretion. Neurological examination did not reveal any abnormality in the central or peripheral nervous system. Skin biopsy showed that the coiled ducts were occluded by an amorphous eo

Currently, the time-averaged root-mean-square RF field (B1+rms) and specific absorption rate (SAR) are being evaluated to monitor and control RF-induced heating near conductive metallic implants, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) leads, during MRI. However, experimental methods to assess the relationship between RF power, B1+rms, and SAR are lacking for RF coils, RF pulse sequences, metallic implants, and ionic solutions. A method is developed to evaluate the variation in RF power, B1+rms, and SAR with RF coils, metallic implants, and ionic solutions using phantoms consisting of water (H2O)

The chicken talpid(3) mutant, with polydactyly and defects in other embryonic regions that depend on hedgehog (Hh) signalling (e.g. the neural tube), has a mutation in KIAA0568. Similar phenotypes are seen in mice and in human syndromes with mutations in genes that encode centrosomal or intraflagella transport proteins. Such mutations lead to defects in primary cilia, sites where Hh signalling occurs. Here, we show that cells of talpid(3) mutant embryos lack primary cilia and that primary cilia can be rescued with constructs encoding Talpid3. talpid(3) mutant embryos also develop polycystic ki
