The consequences of climate change and male reproductive health: A review of the possible impact and mechanisms.

A global decline in male fertility has been reported, and climate change is considered a major cause of this. Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, and results from greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide and methane that act as a blanket wrapped around the earth, trapping heat and elevating temperatures. Sad to say, the consequences of climatic variation are beyond the dramatic elevated temperature, they include cold stress, increased malnutrition, air pollution, cardiovascular diseases respiratory tract infections, cancer, sexually transmitted i

Acute warming in winter eliminates chemical alarm responses in threatened Qinling lenok Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis.

Knowledge of how temperature influences animal behavior is critical to understanding and predicting impacts of changing climate on individual species and biotic interactions. However, the effects of climate change, especially winter warming in freshwater systems, on fish behaviors and the use of chemical information have been largely unexplored. Qinling lenok Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis, an endangered salmonid species endemic to the Qinling Mountain Range, China, is currently experiencing population decline and is a potential biological indicator of warming winter climate effects on fresh

Climate adaptation in the public health sector in Africa: Evidence from United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change National Communications.

Climate change has potential to affect human health in various ways. Extreme temperatures and cold both result in deaths, while the changing habitats favouring the breeding of vectors could result in the spread of diseases such as malaria, cholera and typhus. This article reviews climate change adaptation measures in the African public health sector. The evidence is drawn from National Communications of 21 countries as submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This article combines the literature review and grounded theory approaches with data obtained fr

Rural livelihood vulnerability to climate variability: a district-level assessment in Ethiopia.

Climate variability poses significant risks to Ethiopia's rainfall-dependent smallholder farming systems. Since meteorological patterns can vary widely across agro-ecological zones, understanding differences in vulnerability across these zones is essential for targeted adaptation. However, many existing vulnerability studies rely on basin-, zonal-, or inter-district analyses and apply composite indices without robustness testing, which can obscure within-district heterogeneity and limit policy relevance at the scale where adaptation decisions are implemented. This study assesses smallholder fa

Effects of Low Temperature, Freeze-Thaw Cycles, and Healing Conditions on Viability of Non-Ureolytic Bacteria in Biological Self-Healing Concrete.

The capacity of biological self-healing concrete (BSHC) to repair cracks relies on the sustained viability and metabolic function of bacteria embedded within the concrete. BSHC structures face significant risk in cold climates due to low temperatures and freeze-thaw (FT) cycles, during which freezing water can generate internal pressure that damages bacterial cells and diminishes their activity. A special feature of this study is the incorporation of bacterial spores within expanded clay aggregates, tested under varying environmental conditions. The viability of bacterial spores was measured u

Predicting climate-driven urban rat release and associated risks across climate zones.

Urban rat populations are widely assumed to increase under climate change, largely due to recent studies. This narrative is often extended to cities worldwide, irrespective of their local climate. Yet, this oversimplification obscures complex ecological and social processes that shape commensal rat dynamics. Here, we synthesize evidence across rodent ecology, epidemiology, urbanization, and human behavior to propose a multi‑dimensional framework for urban rat‑release: a climate‑mediated relaxation of seasonal constraints that reduces winter burrow confinement and increases above‑ground activit

Global, regional, and national burden of mortality associated with cold spells during 2000-19: a three-stage modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to cold spells is associated with mortality. However, little is known about the global mortality burden of cold spells. METHODS: A three-stage meta-analytical method was used to estimate the global mortality burden associated with cold spells by means of a time series dataset of 1960 locations across 59 countries (or regions). First, we fitted the location-specific, cold spell-related mortality associations using a quasi-Poisson regression with a distributed lag non-linear model with a lag period of up to 21 days. Second, we built a multivariate meta-regression model betw

Enhancing s-CO2 Brayton Power Cycle Efficiency in Cold Ambient Conditions Through Working Fluid Blends.

Supercritical carbon dioxide (s-CO2) Brayton cycles have emerged as a promising technology for high-efficiency power generation, owing to their compact architecture and favorable thermophysical properties. However, their performance degrades significantly under cold-climate conditions-such as those encountered in Greenland, Russia, Canada, Scandinavia, and Alaska-due to the proximity to the fluid's critical point. This study investigates the behavior of the recompression Brayton cycle (RBC) under subzero ambient temperatures through the incorporation of low-critical-temperature additives to cr

Global effects of extreme temperatures on wild bumblebees.

Climate plays a key role in shaping population trends and determining the geographic distribution of species because of limits in species' thermal tolerance. An evaluation of species tolerance to temperature change can therefore help predict their potential spatial shifts and population trends triggered by ongoing global warming. We assessed inter- and intraspecific variations in heat resistance in relation to body mass, local mean temperatures, and evolutionary relationships in 39 bumblebee species, a major group of pollinators in temperate and cold ecosystems, across 3 continents, 6 biomes,

Persistent eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean upwelling since the warm Pliocene.

Upwelling generates a nutrient-rich "cold tongue" in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean (EEP), with impacts on global climate, oceanic biological productivity, and the carbon cycle. The cold tongue was reduced during the Pliocene Epoch, a feature attributed to weaker upwelling and an associated deepening of the surface mixed layer in the EEP. Here, we report nitrogen-isotope evidence that modern-like upwelling occurred in the EEP during the Pliocene and has persisted over the past 5 million years. We explain the reduced Pliocene cold tongue as an expression of the reduced temperature differe

Cold air inhalation and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in relationship to metacholine bronchial responsiveness: different patterns in asthmatic children and children with other chronic lung diseases.

Cold air inhalation and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) have both been used as measures of bronchial responsiveness. Both stimuli are often combined in the Nordic climate. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the climatic influence of cold temperatures upon exercise-induced asthma. The secondary aims were: (a) to assess metacholine bronchial hyper-responsiveness and EIB in children with bronchial asthma (n = 32; mean age 10.8 years) compared to children with other chronic lung diseases (CLD) (n = 26, mean age 10.1 years); and (b) to assess the influence of cold

Combat Casualty Care in Arctic or Extreme Cold Environments: Considerations for the Army Health System.

The Department of the Army's 2021 strategy to "Regain Arctic Dominance" highlights the operational necessity of sustaining combat readiness in Arctic or extreme cold environments (AoECE). Presented are five scenarios inspired by casualties that illustrate capability gaps and best practices as the Army Health System applies tactical combat casualty care (TCCC) in austere, frigid climates: (1) adapting TCCC to the AoECE as a unique environment; (2) technological limitations in the prevention and treatment of hypothermia; (3) freezing cold injury (FCI) and non-freezing cold injury (NFCI) treatmen

The lagged effect and attributable risk of apparent temperature on hand, foot, and mouth disease in Changsha, China: a distributed lag non-linear model.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is the leading Category C infectious disease affecting millions of children in China every year. In the context of global climate change, the understanding and quantification of the impact of weather factors on human health are particularly critical to the development and implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. The aim of this study was to quantify the attributable burden of a combined bioclimatic indicator (apparent temperature) on HFMD and to identify temperature-specific sensitive populations. A total of 123,622 HFMD cases

Rice cold tolerance: Physiological responses, molecular regulatory networks, and improvement strategies.

Low-temperature stress is a critical abiotic constraint that severely impairs rice yield and quality, posing a substantial threat to global food security-especially as rice, a staple food for more than half of the world's population, is inherently susceptible to cold stress. This review systematically summarizes the typical phenotypic and physiological impairments induced by cold stress across key rice growth stages, and elaborates on the multi-layered molecular regulatory networks underpinning rice cold tolerance, which integrate the entire process of cold signal perception, intracellular tra

Ambient temperature and preterm birth: A retrospective study of 32 million US singleton births.

BACKGROUND: Days of extreme temperature may be associated with transiently higher risk of preterm birth, but prior studies have been limited and results have been heterogeneous. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between days of extreme heat and cold and risk of preterm birth among ~32 million live singleton births between 1989 and 2002 across 403 counties in the contiguous United States (US). METHODS: We used a distributed lag nonlinear model to estimate the association between population-weighted daily mean temperature and risk of preterm birth in each county and then pooled results a

Spatial variability of climate effects on ischemic heart disease hospitalization rates for the period 1989-2006 in Quebec, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested an association between climate variables and circulatory diseases. The short-term effect of climate conditions on the incidence of ischemic heart disease (IHD) over the 1989-2006 period was examined for Quebec's 18 health regions. METHODS: Analyses were carried out for two age groups. A GAM statistical model, that blends the properties of generalized linear models with additive models, was used to fit the standardized daily hospitalization rates for IHD and their relationship with climatic conditions up to two weeks prior to the day of admission, controlling

Temporal trends in late-pregnancy exposure to ambient temperature and risk of preterm birth in Japan, a nationwide study from 1979 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Evidence linking heat exposure with preterm birth (PTB) has grown amid climate change. However, evidence remains limited across the temperature spectrum or temporal changes of susceptibility. METHODS: To assess the temporal and spatial variation in the short-term association between ambient temperature and PTB in Japan from 1979 to 2023, we applied a two-stage design using a time-stratified case-crossover and conditional Poisson model incorporating a 28-day distributed lag non-linear model. Climate change and human health: impacts, vulnerability and public health.

It is now widely accepted that climate change is occurring as a result of the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere arising from the combustion of fossil fuels. Climate change may affect health through a range of pathways, for example as a result of increased frequency and intensity of heat waves, reduction in cold related deaths, increased floods and droughts, changes in the distribution of vector-borne diseases and effects on the risk of disasters and malnutrition. The overall balance of effects on health is likely to be negative and populations in low-income countries are likel
