Phenology and infestation patterns of plum curculio (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) on four highbush blueberry cultivars.

The plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst), is a well known pest in apple and peach orchards, but it also is capable of having an economic impact in highbush blueberries. Host phenology and plum curculio oviposition patterns were determined on four highbush blueberry cultivars differing in fruit maturation period. Numbers of oviposition scars were higher on early- ('Weymouth') and mid-season ('Duke' and 'Bluecrop') blueberries than on late-season 'Elliott' in 2001, 2002, and 2003. In 2002, eggs were first present on the three earliest cultivars 21 d before those on 'Elliott', whereas e

The morphology of male accessory glands in the Glenea cantor (Fabricius, 1787) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Lamiinae).

Male accessory glands of insects serve as secretory organs, exhibiting the ability to produce secretions that regulate reproductive processes. Their histology and ultrastructure are generally regarded as being diverse within insect groups, however, as one of the largest groups of insects, the ultrastructure of male accessory glands in Cerambycidae has never received sufficient attention. The longhorn beetle Glenea cantor (Fabricius, 1787) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Lamiinae) is a wood-boring pest infesting urban landscape trees in southern China, significantly compromising urban greening. Anatomy of male and female genitalia of Acanthoscelidesobtectus (Say, 1831) (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Bruchinae) in interaction.

Armatures of the male intromittent copulatory structures have been surmised to increase male fitness by imposing physiological costs on female re-mating. Female kicking could, consequently, be a counterstrategy to avoid wounding or to prevent males from mating. The membranous endophallus of male Acanthoscelidesobtectus (Say, 1831) is armed with denticles. Checking if these denticles penetrate the wall of the female genital tract during copulation revealed that only the tip of the median lobe of the aedeagus is intromitted into the female genital opening during copulation. The everted endophall

The Influence of Weather and Lunar Phases on the Flight Activity of Paederus Rove Beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae).

Despite the medical importance of Paederus beetles, no studies have studied the influence of the abiotic factors on the flight activity and nighttime dispersal of these insects in Brazil. Therefore, the influence of both climatic factors and moon phase on black-light catches of Paederus rove beetles was investigated. Paederus beetles were attracted to a black light source hourly from 1800 to 0600 hours, and data on weather conditions as well as moon phase data were taken for every sampling date. Overall, 543 individuals of Paederus beetles belonging to four species were captured: P. protensus,

Correlation of chemical compositions of cassava varieties to their resistance to Prostephanus truncatus Horn (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae).

The preference of cassava as a major host by Prostephanus truncatus Horn is a major constraint to ample production of cassava, Manihot esculenta Crantz and storage. This study analyzed the nutritional and secondary metabolite compositions in 15 cassava varieties, evaluated levels of damage and reproduction by P. truncatus, and assessed their resistance to attack. One hundred grams of dried cassava chips in 250-ml Kilner jars were infested with 10 adult larger grain borerof 0-10 days old and held for 3 months. The nutritional and secondary metabolites compositions of the dry cassava chips were

Head morphology of selected Staphylinoidea (Coleoptera: Staphyliniformia) with an evaluation of possible groundplan features in Staphylinidae.

In insects, anatomical features of the head have been found to provide important information for phylogenetic and comparative evolutionary studies. We analyzed the internal head morphology of three (omaliine, tachyporine, oxyteline group) out of the four subfamily groups of the beetle family Staphylinidae plus two non-staphylinid outgroups (i.e., Agyrtidae and Leiodidae). Synchrotron X-ray micro-tomography was used to obtain comparative head anatomical datasets of eight species to describe (i) the presence/absence of muscles inside the head capsule and (ii) the variability in their points of o

Sensitivity threshold and response characteristics of infrared detection in the beetle Melanophila acuminata (Coleoptera: Buprestidae).

The minimum detection threshold of the infrared sensitive beetle, Melanophila acuminata, was measured with a helium-neon laser that emitted light at a wavelength of 3.39 microm. Extracellular recordings were taken both at the pit organ responsible for detection and at the interganglionic connectives in the thorax of the beetle. At the pit organ, generator and action potentials from single neurons were measured with a sharpened tungsten electrode. At the connectives that linked the fused second meso-/metathoracic and prothoracic ganglia, compound action potentials were measured with a tungsten

Ethanol: dose-dependent flight responses of bark and woodboring beetles, and associated species of Coleoptera.

In 2007 to 2008, I assessed the effects of ethanol release rate (dose) on trap catches of bark and woodboring beetles, and associated species of predators, in 6 experiments in north-central Georgia. Multiple-funnel traps were baited with ethanol alone or co-baited with α-pinene (with or without the bark beetle pheromones ipsenol and ipsdienol). The following species of bark and ambrosia beetles exhibited a positive dose-dependent response to ethanol, regardless of co-baits: Corthylus columbianus Hopkins, Dryoxylon onoharaense (Murayama), Hylastes porculus Erichson, Hylastes salebrosus Eichhoff

Redescription of the highly specialized aquatic †Tigrivia and the classification of the Mesozoic †Coptoclavidae (Coleoptera, Adephaga, Dytiscoidea).

†Tigrivia baii, a highly specialized aquatic beetle assigned to the adephagan †Coptoclavidae, is redescribed and documented in detail. The observed morphological features are discussed with respect to function, phylogenetic significance, and the current classification of the Mesozoic family. Cladistic analyses indicate that †Tigrivia is the sister taxon of †Coptoclava. Both may be closely related with †Daohugounectes, but this was not confirmed by the analyses. †Tigrivia is a highly specialized genus, more advanced than the closely related †Coptoclava, showing a range of features suggesting ev

Morphology of the male reproductive system and sperm of Discodon minutum Pic, 1928 (Coleoptera: Cantharidae).

The morphology of the male reproductive system and sperm of adults of Discodon minutum Pic, 1928 (Elateriformia: Cantharidae) was described using light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphology of the reproductive system and sperm provides information of taxonomic value and reveals aspects of reproductive biology, although such morphological characteristics are poorly understood in Cantharidae. The reproductive system of D. minutum consists of two free testes, each with 28-30 follicles, two vasa deferentia, and three pairs of accessory glands, as well as an eja

Diversity and saline-alkali resistance of Coleoptera endosymbiont bacteria in arid and semi-arid climate.

UNLABELLED: Soil salinization usually occurs in arid and semi-arid climate areas from 37 to 50 degrees north latitude and 73 to 123 degrees east longitude. These regions are inhabited by a large number of Coleopteran insects, which play an important role in the ecological cycle. However, little is known about the endosymbiotic microbial taxa and their biological characteristics in these insects. A study of endosymbiotic microorganisms of Coleoptera from Xinjiang, a typical arid and inland saline area, revealed that endosymbiont bacteria with salinity tolerance are common among the endosymbiont

Repellent and Attractant Activities of Organic Compounds on Female and Male Philonthus decorus (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae).

The use of organic compounds in different spheres of human activity is accompanied by their influx to and accumulation in the environment. The negative impact of those compounds can be one of the reasons for a decline in populations and biodiversity of aboveground invertebrates. Chemical compounds can potentially cause a variety of effects (attractant or repellent) on insects, including species of the Staphylinidae family. In a laboratory experiment, we identified repellent and attractant influence of 40 organic compounds and mixtures of compounds (acids, alcohols, ketones, phenols, aldehydes,

An Interspecific Assessment of Bergmann's Rule in Tenebrionid Beetles (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) along an Elevation Gradient.

In endotherms, body size tends to increase with elevation and latitude (i.e., with decreasing temperatures) (Bergmann's rule). These patterns are explained in terms of heat balance since larger animals need to produce less heat relative to their size to maintain stable body temperatures. In ectotherms like most insects, where this mechanism cannot operate, a reverse pattern is frequently observed, as a higher surface area-to-volume ratio in colder climates may allow for more rapid heating and cooling. However, patterns of increasing body size with decreasing temperatures can also be observed i

Suitability of Wild Host Plants and Firewood as Hosts of Prostephanus truncatus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) in Mozambique.

Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) populations are maintained in wild host plants such as trees that act as pest reservoirs from where beetle infestation of maize granaries take place. In this study, we assessed the suitability of plant species sold and transported as firewood as well as other plant species in Mozambique as hosts for P. truncatus. Prostephanus truncatus was only recorded from three tree species, which are sold as firewood, i.e., Brachystegia spiciformis, Strychnos spinosa, and Colophospermum mopane. The pest survived and bred in 13 tree and 7 grass specie

Fungal Associates of the Xylosandrus compactus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) Are Spatially Segregated on the Insect Body.

Studies of symbioses have traditionally focused on explaining one-to-one interactions between organisms. In reality, symbioses are often much more dynamic. They can involve many interacting members, and change depending on context. In studies of the ambrosia symbiosis-the mutualism between wood borer beetles and fungi-two variables have introduced uncertainty when explaining interactions: imprecise symbiont identification, and disregard for anatomical complexity of the insects. The black twig borer, Xylosandrus compactus Eichhoff, is a globally invasive ambrosia beetle that infests >200 plant
