Dermacentor andersoni, known as the Rocky Mountain wood tick, is found in the western United States and transmits pathogens that cause diseases of veterinary and public health importance including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, Colorado tick fever and bovine anaplasmosis. Tick saliva is known to modulate both innate and acquired immune responses, enabling ticks to feed for several days without detection. During feeding ticks subvert host defences such as hemostasis and inflammation, which would otherwise result in coagulation, wound repair and rejection of the tick. Molecular charact

L cell cultures challenged with reoviruses types 1 and 3 produced little to no detectable interferon under conditions which permitted virus replication and under conditions which prevented replication of a temperature-sensitive mutant strain of reovirus type 3 (ts-1). Ultraviolet-irradiated reoviruses and double-stranded ribonucleic acids extracted from purified reovirus type 3 also induced little to no interferon in L cell cultures. Under similar conditions, MM virus proved to be an effective inducer of interferon. Exposure of L cells to interferon prior to challenge with virus (priming) fail

We examined host usage and seasonal activity patterns of the nymphal stage of the ticks Ixodes kingi and I. sculptus within a prairie rodent community in north-central Colorado. Ixodes kingi was commonly encountered on both northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster) and thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus), whereas I. sculptus frequently infested S. tridecemlineatus but was absent from O. leucogaster. Low numbers of ticks of both species were collected from deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) and Ord's kangaroo rats (Dipodomys ordii). Nymphal loads of I. kingi

Ticks are found worldwide and afflict humans with many tick-borne illnesses. Ticks are vectors for pathogens that cause Lyme disease and tick-borne relapsing fever (Borrelia spp.), Rocky Mountain Spotted fever (Rickettsia rickettsii), ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia chaffeensis and E. equi), anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophilum), encephalitis (tick-borne encephalitis virus), babesiosis (Babesia spp.), Colorado tick fever (Coltivirus), and tularemia (Francisella tularensis) (1-8). To be properly transmitted into the host these infectious agents differentially regulate gene expression, interact with

A serologic survey of swift fox (Vulpes velox) and kit fox (V. macrotis) from the western USA was conducted for 12 infectious diseases. Samples from swift fox were collected between 1987 and 1992 from Colorado (n = 44), Kansas (n = 10), and Wyoming (n = 9). Samples from kit fox were collected in California (n = 86), New Mexico (n = 18), Utah (n = 9), and Arizona (n = 6). Overall antibody prevalence rates were 33 of 110 (30%) for canine parvovirus (CPV), 9 of 72 (13%) for canine distemper virus (CDV), 23 of 117 (20%) for vesicular stomatitis New Jersey, 16 of 117 (14%) for vesicular stomatitis

While investigating patients with gastrointestinal (GI) and/or hepatic symptoms, tickborne diseases are only rarely considered to be the cause. However, the Czech Republic is an endemic region for several of tickborne diseases and, therefore, they should be a part of differential diagnosis of GI symptoms of unknown origin. This article describes GI and hepatic symptoms of several tickborne diseases - Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky mountain spotted fever, tularemia, Colorado tick fever, tickborne relapsing fever, Q fever and babesiosis. GI and hepatic symptoms are quite common in Lyme diseas

In July 1995, an outbreak of acute febrile illness affected 11 (48%) of 23 family members from Nebraska and Kansas who had vacationed at a Colorado cabin in June. Similar symptoms were identified among five (17%) of 30 additional persons from Nebraska, Kansas, Florida, and Texas who had vacationed at the same cabin. Symptoms suggested tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF). Although no spirochetes were detected in available blood smears from five case-patients, Borrelia hermsii was cultured from the blood of one case-patient and two chipmunks trapped near the cabin. Case-patients were more likely t

Sera from mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and elk (Cervus canadensis) in central and northern Utah were tested for the prevalence of antibodies to 11 diseases communicable to man or domestic livestock. Antibodies to Francisella tularensis (at 1:20) were found in 47 of 88 (53.4%) elk and 1 of 89 (1.1%) deer. A screening slide agglutination test for titers to Brucella (at 1:20) showed two reactors in elk but none in deer sera. No positive antibody titers were obtained in tests for anaplasmosis, Colorado tick fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Q-fever, psittacosis, Powassan, western equine ence

The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, is the most common human biting tick in the Rocky Mountain region of the USA. Although Rickettsia spp. and Colorado tick fever virus have been studied in D. andersoni in certain areas of their distribution, investigations of most other tickborne pathogens are lacking. Despite the history of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the Bitterroot Mountains of western Montana, no comprehensive surveys of large numbers of ticks for Rickettsia spp. have been conducted there for >40 years. For the present study, host-seeking adult D. andersoni were

Tick carried illnesses frequently lead towards neurological complications. The tick-borne encephalitis and borreliosis are the most frequently encountered illnesses having such aetiopathogenesis. In the study there are presented clinical aspects of tick-borne encephalitis and borreliosis with special consideration of various neurological symptomatology. Simultaneously there are discussed current diagnostic rules of the diseases, mainly on the basis of serologic investigation.

To estimate rates of hospitalizations for tick-borne diseases (TBDs) in Canada, retrospective analysis was conducted to determine the incidence of patients diagnosed with TBDs during their hospital stay in Canada, and describe demographic characteristics, temporal trends and geographic distributions, from 2009 through 2021. Codes from the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10-CA) were used to capture diagnoses of TBDs in the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) in Canadian hospitals. From 2009 through 2021, 1,626 patients were diagnosed with TBDs during their hospital s

An indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) test was performed with human sera to detect cross-reactivity of Babesia microti antibodies with other species of Babesia parasites, with other blood and tissue parasites, and with various tick-borne organisms. Antisera to B. microti cross reacted with other Babesia species, but at lower dilutions than with the homologous antigens, and occurred most often during the acute phase of the disease. Cross-reactions with antibodies to malaria, Colorado tick fever, and a variety of other parasitic diseases were uncommon. However, acute and convalescent phase sera f

Dermacentor andersoni, the Rocky Mountain wood tick, is an important vector for pathogens impacting human and animal health, including bovine anaplasmosis, Colorado tick fever, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. A better understanding of the biology of this tick is needed for developing disease prevention and vector control strategies. A reference genome was assembled for D. andersoni using high-fidelity (HiFi) long-read PacBio sequences and Hi-C contact mapping, yielding a contiguous assembly in which most contigs matched one of 11 chromosomes. From 1974 to 1989, sera from symptomatic patients with histories of recent travel outside Canada were tested for antibodies to several arboviruses, principally of the alphavirus and flavivirus families. Diagnostic seroconversions were documented in 84 individuals from six provinces, including one alphavirus (Chikungunya) and 83 flavivirus seroconvertors. Dengue 1 virus was isolated from the blood of one patient. Most flavivirus seroconvertors were likely infected with dengue virus, but infections with tick-borne encephalitis, St Louis encephalitis and Powassan viruses were also recognized. Pat

OBJECTIVE: Lyme disease is an emerging infection in Canada caused by the bacterium belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species complex, which is transmitted via the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Populations of blacklegged ticks continue to expand and are now established in different regions in Canada. It usually takes more than 24 hours of tick attachment to transfer B. burgdorferi to a human. The diagnosis of early localized Lyme disease is made by clinical assessment, as laboratory tests are not reliable at this stage. Most patients with early localized Lyme disease will

Ticks may transmit a variety of human pathogens and are second in importance only to the mosquito as a vector of human disease. The majority of tick-borne diseases are nonspecific in their initial clinical and laboratory presentation and may be confused with a variety of more common illnesses. A history of tick exposure is frequently not available. Although specific serologic tests exist for confirming the diagnosis of many of these diseases, the time required for confirmation of results makes them of little use in the acute situation. Recognition of the epidemiology of tick-borne pathogens an
