Two interferon-independent double-stranded RNA-induced host defense strategies suppress the common cold virus at warm temperature.

Most strains of rhinovirus (RV), the common cold virus, replicate better at cool temperatures found in the nasal cavity (33-35 °C) than at lung temperature (37 °C). Recent studies found that although 37 °C temperature suppressed RV growth largely by engaging the type 1 IFN response in infected epithelial cells, a significant temperature dependence to viral replication remained in cells devoid of IFN induction or signaling. To gain insight into IFN-independent mechanisms limiting RV replication at 37 °C, we studied RV infection in human bronchial epithelial cells and H1-HeLa cells. During the s

Interferon signaling in the nasal epithelium distinguishes among lethal and common cold respiratory viruses and is critical for viral clearance.

All respiratory viruses establish primary infections in the nasal epithelium, where efficient innate immune induction may prevent dissemination to the lower airway and thus minimize pathogenesis. Human coronaviruses (HCoVs) cause a range of pathologies, but the host and viral determinants of disease during common cold versus lethal HCoV infections are poorly understood. We model the initial site of infection using primary nasal epithelial cells cultured at air-liquid interface (ALI). HCoV-229E, HCoV-NL63 and human rhinovirus-16 are common cold-associated viruses that exhibit unique features in

A Real-World Study on Ge Gen Tang in Combination with Herbal Medicines for Relieving Common Cold-Associated Symptoms.

PURPOSE: Real-world evidence refers to patient data derived from the healthcare process. In this study, we used National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) assessments and clinical studies of Ge Gen Tang (GGT, ) in patients with common cold to establish a real-world study model of Traditional Chinese Medicine formulae. GGT is widely prescribed for the treatment of common cold in Taiwan, generally in combination with other medicines. The aim of this study was to determine whether a correlation exists between GGT combined with other medicines and an improvement in cold symptoms. We also

Maternal Common Cold or Fever During Pregnancy and the Risk of Orofacial Clefts in the Offspring: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

The common cold and/or an associated fever during pregnancy have/has been suspected to harm the developing fetus. We sought possible correlations between a maternal common cold or fever during pregnancy and the risk of orofacial clefts in the offspring. We systematically searched PubMed and Embase using appropriate keywords, and we checked the reference lists of retrieved articles. We used random-effects models to estimate overall relative risks. Incidence of orofacial clefts. We included 13 case-control studies. Modest but statistically significant associations were found between a maternal c

A Lung-Immune Dual-Humanized Mouse Using Cryopreserved Tissue Enables Infection and Immune Profiling of Human Common Cold Coronaviruses.

Human common cold coronaviruses (CCCoVs, e.g., 229E, NL63, OC43, HKU1) hold critical yet underexplored significance in understanding coronavirus evolutionary dynamics and immune cross-protection, offering insights for predicting emerging pathogens and developing pan-coronavirus vaccines. However, research is hindered by the lack of animal models due to strict human-specific tropism and the confounding effects of frequent co-infections from clinical samples, which obscure virus-specific pathogenesis. Although lung-humanized mice have been used in SARS-CoV-2 studies, their application to CCCoVs

Nasal inflammation induced by a common cold: comparison between controls and patients with nasal polyposis under topical steroid therapy.

The evolution of nasal inflammation during a common cold in patients with nasal polyposis under topical steroid treatment is not clearly defined in the literature. Objective of this study was to analyse nasal inflammation during a common cold in patients with nasal polyposis under topical steroid treatment in comparison with control subjects. Two groups of subjects (35 consecutive patients with nasal polyposis receiving medical treatment, and 17 control subjects without any symptoms of chronic rhino-sinusitis) were studied: 10 patients with nasal polyposis and 11 controls had a common cold dur

Differentiation of COVID-19 signs and symptoms from allergic rhinitis and common cold: An ARIA-EAACI-GA2 LEN consensus.

BACKGROUND: Although there are many asymptomatic patients, one of the problems of COVID-19 is early recognition of the disease. COVID-19 symptoms are polymorphic and may include upper respiratory symptoms. However, COVID-19 symptoms may be mistaken with the common cold or allergic rhinitis. An ARIA-EAACI study group attempted to differentiate upper respiratory symptoms between the three diseases. METHODS: A modified Delphi process was used. The ARIA members who were seeing COVID-19 patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire on the upper airway symptoms of COVID-19, common cold and allergi

Temperature-dependent innate defense against the common cold virus limits viral replication at warm temperature in mouse airway cells.

Most isolates of human rhinovirus, the common cold virus, replicate more robustly at the cool temperatures found in the nasal cavity (33-35 °C) than at core body temperature (37 °C). To gain insight into the mechanism of temperature-dependent growth, we compared the transcriptional response of primary mouse airway epithelial cells infected with rhinovirus at 33 °C vs. 37 °C. Mouse airway cells infected with mouse-adapted rhinovirus 1B exhibited a striking enrichment in expression of antiviral defense response genes at 37 °C relative to 33 °C, which correlated with significantly higher expressi

Cold intolerance is not more common or disabling after digital replantation than after other treatment of compound digital injuries.

Cold intolerance is a common reason for disability after hand injury. In this study of posttraumatic cold intolerance, 20 patients with a history of digital replantation were matched with 20 control subjects who had not undergone replantation. The incidence and intensity of cold-related symptoms among patients in the two groups was investigated through the use of individual interviews and a grading scale for self-assessment of symptoms. The analysis of data indicates that although the pattern of symptoms may vary, the condition is neither more common nor more disabling among those who have und
