[Dysmorphophobia. Becoming estranged with oneself as a disorder of communication].

Dysmorphophobia shall be described as an example for a communicative disorder and be deliminated from other syndromes under which it has been subsumed so far. On the background of available literature, the "fear of deformity" is to be elaborated as feeling ashamed of the contemptuous look of another person, whose look has turned into the own view. This results in a discrepancy with the ego and the own self conveyed by others, finally leading to depersonalisation. This basic interpersonal appearance shall be further illustrated by two individual examples.

Epidemiology of somatoform disorders: a community survey in Florence.

Since the exclusion of somatic causes is necessary for somatoform disorders (SMD) to be diagnosed, there is little information on the prevalence of such disorders in the community. As the method we have previously developed [general practitioners (GPs) with psychiatric training who interview samples representative of the general population] seemed to be appropriate to deal with the problem, we carried out a community survey focused on somatoform disorders. The prevalence rates of DSM-III-R somatoform disorders were studied in two wards of the city of Florence. In order to be representative of

Prevalence of movement disorders in elderly community residents.

We studied movement disorders (MD) in community residents of Saskatchewan aged > or = 65 years. A representative sample of 70 individuals had detailed neurological evaluation. Those who had definite and possible MD at first examination had a second neurological assessment by a senior neurologist. The most prevalent MD was essential tremor (ET) (14%) followed by Parkinson's disease (PD) (3%). The marked difference in prevalence ratios for PD and ET are attributed to: (a) higher incidence of ET in the general population; (b) a greater possibility that most, if not all, ET cases would reside in t

The use of intonation to communicate in pervasive developmental disorders.

The objective of this paper was to employ a functional linguistic approach to explore pragmatic failure in the spontaneous speech of subjects with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). Patterns of intonation use were compared among subjects with Asperger's syndrome (AS), high-functioning autism (HFA), and psychiatric out-patient controls (OPC) with a variety of non-specific social problems. Written transcripts and audio-recordings were used to measure rates of various intonation types relative to the amount of speech produced. The major finding of the study was that the HFA subjects less of

Epidemiology of mood disorders: a community survey in Florence.

A structured interview designed to detect affective disorders and to produce both DSM-III and DSM-III-R diagnoses was administered to a community sample of 1000 people living in Florence. The interviews were carried out by physician-psychiatrists (qualified psychiatrists or 3rd-4th-year trainees) trained in the use of operational diagnoses. The 1-year prevalence and point prevalence were, respectively: 1.7% and 0.6% for bipolar disorder; 0.4% and 0.4% for cyclothymia; 6.2% and 2.8% for major depression; 2.6% and 0.8% for dysthymia; 5.2% and 1.8% for depressive disorder not otherwise specified.

Affective disorders in five United States communities.

Results on the age/sex specific prevalence of DSM-III affective disorders from the NIMH Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study (ECA), a probability sample of over 18,000 adults from five United States communities, are presented. The cross-site means for bipolar disorder ranged from 0.7/100 (2 weeks) to 1.2/100 (lifetime), with a mean age of onset of 21 years and no sex difference in rates. The cross-site means for major depression ranged from 1.5/100 (2 weeks) to 4.4/100 (lifetime), with a mean age onset of 27 years and higher rates in women. The cross-site means for dysthymia, a chronic condition

A guide to the community management of paediatric eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are a group of serious, potentially life-threatening illnesses that typically have their onset during adolescence and can be associated with severe medical and psychosocial complications. The impact of EDs on caregivers and other family members can also be significant. Health care providers (HCPs) play an important role in the screening and management of adolescents and young adults with EDs. This position statement assists community-based HCPs with recognizing, diagnosing, and treating EDs in the paediatric population. Screening modalities, indications for hospitalizati

Referential communication in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Referential communication was studied in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) including children with autism and Asperger syndrome. The aim was to study alternative explanations for the children's communicative problems in such situations. Factors studied were theory of mind, IQ, verbal ability and memory. The main results demonstrated diminished performance in children with autism spectrum disorder, mirroring performance in everyday life, in comparison to verbal IQ and mental age matched typically developing children. Among children with autism spectrum disorders, there was a positive

School refusal and psychiatric disorders: a community study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between anxious school refusal and truancy and psychiatric disorders in a community sample of children and adolescents using a descriptive rather than etiological definition of school refusal. METHOD: Data from eight annual waves of structured psychiatric interviews with 9- to 16-year-olds and their parents from the Great Smoky Mountains Study were analyzed. RESULTS: Pure anxious school refusal was associated with depression (odds ratio [OR] = 13, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.4, 42) and separation anxiety disorder (OR = 8.7, 95% CI 4.1, 19). Cigarette smoking and psychiatric disorder in a community sample.

We examined the lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders in cigarette smokers and nonsmokers in a non-patient sample. First-degree relatives of psychiatric patients (n = 697) and normal controls (n = 360) were interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and the Structured Interview for DSM-III Personality Disorders. Using these interviews we diagnosed the major mental (Axis I) disorders and personality (Axis II) disorders. A cigarette smoker was defined as someone who smoked daily for a month or more at some time in their lives. We found that smokers more frequently had a lifetime h

Spouse concordance for depressive disorders in a community sample.

This article describes an analysis of spouse concordance for major depression and for other depressive experiences. Respondents to a community survey of married men and women (N = 586 couples) completed a modified version of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule from which diagnoses of major depression and dysthymia were derived. Subclinical depressive episodes were also identified. A cross-tabulation of husbands' and wives' diagnoses revealed weak concordance for lifetime prevalence of major depression. In contrast, concordance for the experience of depressive episodes, regardless of associated s

Group performance differences in reading, math, and science by fourth graders with and without communication disorders.

PURPOSE: Theoretical perspectives of learning academic subjects and curricular standards highlight the critical role of language ability. Thus, it is important to assess the academic achievement of children with language deficits to ensure the development of interventions to facilitate success in the classroom. This investigation aimed to compare the performance of fourth graders with communication disorders (ComDis) to those with typical language development (GenEd) on measures of reading, mathematics, and science achievement. Interaction effects of gender and income with language status were

Role-play-based hug-robot-mediated communication in promoting friendship among individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience challenges in building friendships across the lifespan. To address the limitations of existing hug-based interventions, we developed Moffuly-MS, a tele-operated interactive hugging robot. In this study, participants were paired and alternated roles using Moffuly-MS; one person operated the robot to deliver a hug, while the other received it, and they took turns playing both roles. This study aimed to evaluate whether bidirectional haptic interaction via Moffuly-MS could improve mutual understanding and promote a sense of oneness.

Patient participation in team meetings - experiences of individuals with cognitive communication disorders after acquired brain injury.

PURPOSE: Patient participation is a key aspect of person-centered care. In rehabilitation settings, team meetings gathering the patient, rehabilitation team, and family members are an important tool to achieve patient participation. However, such meetings may represent a challenge for persons with cognitive communication disorder (CCD). This study aimed to explore the experiences of participation in team meetings among individuals with CCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 13 participants with CCD. Data were analyzed using qualitative

Management of functional communication, swallowing, cough and related disorders: consensus recommendations for speech and language therapy.

Communication problems (eg, dysphonia, dysfluency and language and articulation disorders), swallowing disorders (dysphagia and globus), cough and upper airway symptoms, resulting from functional neurological disorder (FND), are commonly encountered by speech and language professionals. However, there are few descriptions in the literature of the most effective practical management approaches. This consensus document aims to provide recommendations for assessment and intervention that are relevant to both adults and young people. [Frankfurt group social communication and interaction skills training for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders].

OBJECTIVE: Despite the recognition of the need for group-based training programmes for children and adolescents with autistic disorders, there are only very few specific German-speaking training programmes available. Since 2003, a structured group training programme on social skills for children and adolescents with high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome has been developed and conducted at our department. The training programme focuses on the main deficits of those disorders. Thus, the primary goal is to improve communication and interaction skills. METHOD: Participants are children and
