"I like talking to people on the computer": Outcomes of a home-based intervention to develop social media skills in youth with disabilities living in rural communities.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effectiveness of a home-based social media use intervention to enhance the social networks of rural youth with disabilities. METHOD: Participants were nine youth (mean age = 17.0 years) with disabilities from two rural Australian communities. The intervention consisted of providing appropriate assistive technology and social media training on individualised goals. Using mixed methods, quantitative (a single group pre-post) and qualitative (interviews with participants and their carers) measures were used to examine outcomes of training, individual experiences of th

Correlation between Carotid Intima-Media Thickness and Early-Stage Chronic Kidney Disease: Results from Asymptomatic Polyvascular Abnormalities in Community Study.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) might be a potential independent risk factor for increased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). Our aim is to determine whether mild to moderate kidney dysfunction is associated with increased carotid IMT. METHODS: We employed 3629 subjects free from clinical cardiovascular diseases at the baseline visit of the Asymptomatic Polyvascular Abnormalities in Community Study. Kidney function was evaluated in terms of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) calculated by the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration China equation. The mean of the

LOX-1 ligands containing apolipoprotein B and carotid intima-media thickness in middle-aged community-dwelling US Caucasian and Japanese men.

OBJECTIVE: The serum level of LOX-1 ligand containing ApoB (LAB) may reflect atherogenicity better than LDL cholesterol (LDLC), total LDL particles and usual measurement of oxidized LDL. The association between LAB and intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid artery was investigated by ultrasound in US and Japan men. METHODS: Participants were 297 US Caucasian and 310 Japanese men, aged 40-49 years without past history of cardiovascular disease. Serum LAB levels were measured by ELISAs with recombinant LOX-1 and monoclonal anti-apolipoprotein B antibody. RESULTS: Serum LAB levels [median (int

More than a gut feeling: large language model thematic analysis of social media posts from inflammatory bowel disease patient communities.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) morbidity extends beyond gastrointestinal symptoms and complications. We aimed to describe IBD patient experience through an analysis of online patient communities. METHODS: Thematic analysis of 104,123 posts from three IBD patient groups on the social media platform Reddit between 2015-2024 was undertaken using a large language model (LLM) based on the GPT-4 architecture. The Valence Aware Dictionary and Sentiment Reasoner (VADER) tool was used to assess sentiment analysis. RESULTS: Of 15 core themes identified by LLM analysis, the most prevalent

Long term effects of community-based STI screening and mass media HIV prevention messages on sexual risk behaviors of African American adolescents.

We examined the long-term effects of two interventions designed to reduce sexual risk behavior among African American adolescents. African American adolescents (N = 1383, ages 14-17) were recruited from community-based organizations over a period of 16 months in two northeastern and two southeastern mid-sized U.S. cities with high rates of sexually transmitted infection (STI). Participants were screened for three STIs (gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis) and completed an audio computer-assisted attitude, intention, and behavior self-interview. Youth who tested positive for an STI (8.3%)

Assessing community resilience during the first COVID-19 wave peak in a megacity in eastern China: a cross-sectional study using social media data.

OBJECTIVES: In the face of pandemics resulting from infectious disease, improving community resilience has become increasingly vital. China's sudden exit from Zero-COVID policy in December 2022 triggered a surge in COVID-19 cases, compounded by medication shortages due to earlier restrictions, creating a public health crisis. This study assesses community resilience during the first post-Zero-COVID infection wave (8 December 2022 to 7 January 2023), focusing on adaptation mechanisms, resource mobilisation, protective behaviours and medicine access, using real-time social media data to capture

Development of a Social Media Campaign to Support HIV Prevention and Care Among Transgender Latina Women: Community-Engaged Mixed Methods Feasibility Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Transgender Latina women in the United States face disproportionate HIV risk due to intersecting social and structural vulnerabilities that limit access to care. While gender-affirming, culturally responsive, and eHealth strategies show promise for improving access, social media-based approaches remain underused despite their potential to reach marginalized groups at scale. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and pilot a culturally tailored social media campaign to increase awareness of HIV prevention and care services offered by a community-based organization (CBO) in King Cou

Using photo-elicitation interviews to explore the experiences of social media influencers with visible differences: "I didn't mean to become a voice for our whole community".

Some individuals with visible differences (conditions or injuries that affect one's appearance), have become social media influencers, using their platforms to share experiences, challenge stereotypes, and promote representation of appearance diversity. However, no research has explored their experiences and how they navigate this evolving role. Therefore, semi-structured photo-elicitation interviews were carried out with fourteen adult influencers (aged 18-45) with a range of visible differences to understand their experiences. Social media posts from their own accounts were used to facilitat

Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity as a measurement for increased carotid intima-media thickness: A comparison with carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity in a Chinese community-based cohort.

Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) act as two most frequently applied indicators to evaluate arterial stiffness. Limited studies have systematically compared the relationships between cfPWV/baPWV and increased carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT). This study aimed to investigate the associations of the two PWV indices with cIMT in a Chinese community-based population. A total of 6026 Chinese participants from an atherosclerosis cohort were included in our analysis. Increased cIMT was defined as the maximum of cIMT > 0.9 mm in end-systoli

The Young Men and Media Study: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of a Community-Informed, Online HIV Prevention Intervention for 14-17-Year-Old Sexual Minority Males.

The Young Men and Media study developed and pilot tested a community-informed, online HIV prevention program for adolescent sexual minority males (ASMM) in the United States. The developed intervention uses nine interactive modules to increase sexual health knowledge, promote critical examination of pornography, and decrease sexual risk among ASMM. Participants (N = 154, age 14-17 years) were recruited online in Spring 2020 and randomized to the intervention (n = 77) or other existing HIV websites (n = 77). Of the 65 intervention participants who logged in to the website, most completed all ni

Mass media and communication interventions to increase HIV testing among gay and other men who have sex with men: Social marketing and visual design component analysis.

Mass media and communication interventions can play a role in increasing HIV testing among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Despite the key role of social marketing principles and visual design within intervention development of this type, evidence is limited regarding interventions' social marketing mix or visual design. As part of a systematic review, intervention content was assessed using social marketing theory and social semiotics. Data were extracted on the nature of the intervention, mode of delivery, use of imagery, content and tone and the eight key characte

Emerging infectious disease outbreaks and real-time health communication: intermediality, uncertainty and dissent.

This article maps out the challenges of public global health communication in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic by providing an overview of the shifting media of health communication from the post-Second World War era to the present. The article explores the communication of science in real-time or live media of film, television, video and digital social media during three emerging infectious-disease (EID) outbreaks to place COVID-19 health communication in historical perspective. Examination of the transition from centralized, top-down communications to distributed, many-to-many, mobile co

"Sisters Influencing Sisters:" Findings from a Community-Engaged Process to Develop a Social Media-Based, Influencer-Delivered Intervention to Increase PrEP Awareness, Knowledge, and Uptake Among Transgender Women.

Transgender women (TW) shoulder a disproportionate burden of HIV diagnoses, yet are less likely to use PrEP, due to intersectional social and structural barriers to accessing services. TW utilize social media to share health information and foster community, yet to date, most studies leveraging the power of these platforms for PrEP interventions have focused on gay men. To address this gap, we partnered with TW social media influencers and engaged a Community Advisory Board (CAB) to develop an Instagram-based intervention to increase PrEP awareness, knowledge, and use among TW. Over quarterly

Improving Recruitment Through Social Media and Web-Based Advertising to Evaluate the Genetic Risk and Long-Term Complications in Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis: Community-Based Survey.

BACKGROUND: Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are genetically mediated, life-threatening reactions usually caused by a medication in adults. These genetic associations promise an opportunity for pre-prescription screening, prevention, and understanding influences at a population level. Importantly, older adults disproportionally face more severe SJS/TEN reactions and higher mortality rates. However, the study of genetic risk and long-term sequelae of SJS/TEN across racially diverse populations and age groups is hampered by many factors, including rarity, socia
