ENGAGE-TBI: adaptation of a community-based intervention to improve social participation after brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is prevalent after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and has negative implications for health and well-being. Interventions targeting social participation show promise for reducing social isolation. We adapted a social participation intervention, ENGAGE, to meet the needs of people with TBI. ENGAGE relies on social learning and guided problem-solving to achieve social participation goals. METHODS: This study was conducted in two phases. First, we conducted focus groups with 12 participants with TBI to inform adaptations. We then tested the adapted protocol (n = 6). Pos

Engagement of a community advisory group to shape and build up participation in TB research.

It is essential that communities at risk from TB are involved in TB research. Community advisory groups (CAGs) are one mechanism for involving communities in research and creating platforms for discussions between researchers and community members. We organised a CAG meeting with community members and people with lived experience in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to explore the community's knowledge about TB and their perspectives on different diagnostic tests in Vietnam, a low-middle-income country with a high TB burden. Researchers shared basic information and addressed questions about TB. CAG m

Community Reintegration, Participation, and Employment Issues in Veterans and Service Members With Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been called the signature injury of the post-9/11 wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and neighboring countries. Although similarities exist between veterans and service members with TBI, levels of severity and different constellations of coexisting comorbid conditions affect them differently. These conditions affect physical, cognitive, and emotional function, which in turn can complicate community reintegration (CR), or the ability to return to family, vocational, and community life. This special supplement of the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation consi

Broadening participation in community problem solving: a multidisciplinary model to support collaborative practice and research.

Over the last 40 years, thousands of communities-in the United States and internationally-have been working to broaden the involvement of people and organizations in addressing community-level problems related to health and other areas. Yet, in spite of this experience, many communities are having substantial difficulty achieving their collaborative objective, and many funders of community partnerships and participation initiatives are looking for ways to get more out of their investment. One of the reasons we are in this predicament is that the practitioners and researchers who are interested

Self-Experienced Difficulties in Communicative Participation in Children With Speech, Language and Communication Needs-A Concept Elicitation Study.

BACKGROUND: Communicative participation is the most important outcome of speech and language therapy. A patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for children would help capture this outcome. Before this PROM can be developed, it is important to find out what situations children themselves find difficult because of their communication problem. AIMS: The aim of the study was to identify relevant aspects of self-reported communicative participation in children with communication disorders. METHOD AND PROCEDURES: Thirteen children (5-12 years old) with speech disorders, developmental language dis

Understanding barriers and facilitators to participation in Parkinson's research in Black communities in the UK.

People from Black backgrounds are underrepresented in Parkinson's research, despite evidence of higher disease burden and risk of dementia. Greater understanding of the factors influencing participation in Parkinson's research can improve recruitment, quality and generalizability of both observational research studies and clinical trials. Through focus groups with 17 people with Parkinson's and carers from Black communities, we identified distrust in the research process, stigma of Parkinson's diagnosis, and accessibility as key barriers to research participation. Participants made recommendat

The relationship of rate and pause features to the communicative participation of people living with ALS.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Many people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (PALS) report restrictions in their day-to-day communication (communicative participation). However, little is known about which speech features contribute to these restrictions. This study evaluated the effects of common speech symptoms in PALS (reduced overall speaking rate, slowed articulation rate, and increased pausing) on communicative participation restrictions. METHODS: Participants completed surveys (the Communicative Participation Item Bank-short form; the self-entry version of the ALS Functional Rating Scale-R
