Weight management needs in under-resourced communities elicited using storyboarding and a realist lens: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Overweight and obesity are causing a growing public health, economic, and clinical burden, particularly within under-resourced communities. There is an urgent need to develop an in-depth understanding of experiences of weight management as well as preferences for support within under-resourced communities, with a view to developing more effective weight management interventions. METHODS: Focus groups were run in under-resourced communities using storyboarding, a method used to facilitate inclusive communication (n = 37). Thematic analysis was applied to textual and visual data, and

ResMap: A community resource for systematic mapping of therapy-persistent residual cancer cell dependencies across contexts.

Relapse following targeted therapy remains a central challenge in oncogene-driven cancers. Drug-tolerant persister cells that survive initial treatment without genetic resistance seed relapse, yet despite over a decade of research, no persister-directed therapy has reached clinical approval. To bridge this gap, we developed ResMap, a community resource providing both a standardized experimental framework and quantitative dataset for systematic comparison of persister vulnerabilities across cancer contexts. Using this platform, we evaluated 94 compounds targeting 57 literature-derived candidate

Opportunities, challenges, and sustainability of lay co-research teams in low resource community settings in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Community-led research (CLR) positions community members as active partners in generating knowledge about issues affecting their wellbeing. This approach is grounded in the principle that those closest to a problem are best placed to identify meaningful and sustainable solutions. In Sri Lanka's plantation sector, families face persistent socio-economic and health inequities, including limited access to education, nutrition, and healthcare. The Women in Community Research (WinCR) group was established to address these challenges by enabling community members to lead research, docume

Consumer Co-Design of an Online Resource to Build Communication Skills of Health Consumers: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Information provided by health professionals can be complex and is often not well understood by health care consumers, leading to adverse outcomes. Clinician-led communication approaches such as "teach-back" can improve consumer understanding, yet are infrequently used by clinicians. A possible solution is to build consumers' skills to proactively check their understanding rather than waiting for the clinician to do so; however, there are few educational resources to support consumers in building these skills. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to co-design a web-based learning resource

Resource utilisation and cost of hospitalisation with community-acquired pneumonia among older adults in India, 2018-2020.

INTRODUCTION: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is an important cause of hospitalisation among older adults. Assessing costs of CAP hospitalisation aids in economic evaluation of preventive interventions and guides policy decisions. METHODS: We estimated resource utilisation rates and costs from a societal perspective among adults aged >60 years admitted with CAP in eight public and eight private hospitals in four Indian cities (ie, National Capital Region-Delhi, Kolkata, Pune and Chennai) from December 2018 to March 2020. We interviewed patients, reviewed medical records and bills to estima

Scabies in Resource-Poor Communities in Nasarawa State, Nigeria: Epidemiology, Clinical Features and Factors Associated with Infestation.

Epidemiology and clinical features of scabies remain largely unknown in Nigeria's rural communities. To fill this gap, we performed a cross-sectional study in three rural communities in north central Nigeria. A total of 500 individuals were included and examined for scabies infestation; a questionnaire was applied to collect socio-demographic and behavioral data. Scabies was diagnosed in 325 (65.0%) participants. Excoriations (68.6%), vesicles (61.8%), and papules (58.8%) were common skin lesions. Itching was the most common symptom (77.5%); 64% complained of sleep disturbances. Lymphadenopath

Community-based approaches for prevention of mother to child transmission in resource-poor settings: a social ecological review.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous barriers to optimal uptake of prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) services occur at community level (i.e., outside the healthcare setting). To achieve elimination of paediatric HIV, therefore, interventions must also work within communities to address these barriers and increase service use and need to be informed by evidence. This paper reviews community-based approaches that have been used in resource-limited settings to increase rates of PMTCT enrolment, retention in care and successful treatment outcomes. It aims to identify which interventions work, w

Improving pig husbandry in tropical resource-poor communities and its potential to reduce risk of porcine cysticercosis.

To minimise the risk of cysticercosis in pigs it is necessary to raise pigs in confinement. The prevailing production system using free-range pigs is apparently very resilient although economic studies have shown that these traditional production systems are wasteful and unprofitable due to poor feed conversion, high mortality rates, low reproductive rates and poor final products. However, experiences from Africa show that intensive pig farming is stagnant and the sustainability of the traditional sector is better than that of the intensive sector. Examples from various African countries are g

Veterinary needs of dogs in two resource-limited communities in the Gauteng and North West provinces of South Africa.

Information on the socioeconomic aspects and the health status of dogs in 2 resource-limited communities in the North West and Gauteng provinces of South Africa was gathered using semi-structured interviews and a standardised questionnaire. The dogs were examined clinically to determine their health status, and their body condition and age were scored. Most of the dogs (93 % in Jericho and 90 % in Zuurbekom) were infected with hookworm, which poses a threat to animal and human health in the 2 study areas. Many dogs were also being given a protein-deficient diet, which together with hookworm pa

Paediatric Critical Care Implementation in Lower-Resource Settings: Application of Community-Based Group Model Building.

OBJECTIVES: Given the significant burden of critical illness and high mortality in Low-Middle Income Countries (LMICs), ICU care could substantially improve patient outcomes in LMICs. No systematic approach is available to identify the perceived and actual challenges of developing and maintaining high-quality intensive care units in LMICs. This study aimed to use community-based group model building (GMB) as an intervention to evaluate the barriers and facilitators of establishing a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in LMIC. DESIGN: A GMB workshop was conducted with 27 participants, repre

Faith, Food, and Health: Samoan Churches as Missed Health Communication Resources in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) disproportionately affect Samoan communities in the Pacific Islands and United States, and food literacy is an important determinant of dietary behavior. Churches are central Samoan cultural institutions, yet their role in U.S. diaspora health practices remains underexamined. This study examines churches as nutrition and health information sources among the Samoan diaspora in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the largest Pacific Islander populations in the United States. Data derive from surveys of 147 Samoan adults and five semi-structured interviews conducte

Plant community richness and foliar fungicides impact soil Streptomyces inhibition, resistance, and resource use phenotypes.

Plants serve as critical links between above- and below-ground microbial communitites, both influencing and being influenced by microbes in these two realms. Below-ground microbial communities are expected to respond to soil resource environments, which are mediated by the roots of plants that can, in turn, be influenced by the above-ground community of foliar endophytes. For instance, diverse plant communities deposit more, and more diverse, nutrients into the soil, and this deposition is often increased when foliar pathogens are removed. Differences in soil resources can alter soil microbial
