BACKGROUND: China has entered an aging society, and the mental health of the aged has gradually attracted social attention. This study aimed to model the mediating effect of social activities on the relationship between incapacitation and depression in the aged and to explore the moderating effect of community support on the mediating role.
METHODS: This paper used the latest data from The Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). A moderated mediation effect model was constructed with the degree of incapacity as the independent variable, depressive symptoms as the dependent vari

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccination has significantly reduced the risk of severe disease. Yet, across many settings in Australia, there have been issues with equitable uptake, particularly for some people from ethnic minority backgrounds. To bridge this gap, training workshops were held to support the capacity of local community leaders to communicate about the COVID-19 booster vaccines and other recommended vaccines as local vaccine champions. This study aimed to explore participants' vaccine and communication knowledge and the acceptability and perceived usefulness of the Vaccine Champions Prog

BACKGROUND: Early communication supports are essential for development, learning and later employment. For children with visual impairments and blindness (VI and B), we argue that communication and its supports need to be considered outside of the normative ableist framework to best facilitate development.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore and describe how a home-based programme at a community-based organisation supported the communication development of children with VI and B by exploring and describing: (1) the organisation, its context and ethos; (2) the programme methodology includi

BACKGROUND: In the medical field of obstetrics, communication plays a crucial role, and pregnant women, in particular, can benefit from interventions improving their self-reported communication behavior. Effective communication behavior can be understood as the correct transmission of information without misunderstanding, confusion, or losses. Although effective communication can be trained by patient education, there is limited research testing this systematically with an app-based digital intervention. Thus, little is known about the success of such a digital intervention in the form of a we

BACKGROUND: Despite a surge in health information and communication technology (ICT), there is little evidence of lowered cost or increased quality of care. ICT may support patients, health care providers, and other stakeholders through complex rehabilitation trajectories by offering digital platforms for collaboration, shared decision-making, and safe storage of data. Yet, the questions on how ICT can become a useful tool and how the complex intersection between producers and users of ICT should be solved are challenging.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to review the literature on how ICTs are us

PURPOSE: Understanding students' home literacy environments can help speech-language pathologists, teachers, and other educators partner with families to promote language and literacy learning. This study focused on gaining insight into the views of parents of elementary-age students with intellectual and developmental disabilities who had complex communication needs related to supporting children's language and literacy learning in the home.
METHOD: This qualitative study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many schools were utilizing remote or hybrid learning arrangements. Part

PURPOSE: Following serious case review, the Transforming Care agenda (DH, 2015) highlights the need for adults with learning disabilities, autism, mental health issues or behaviors that challenge to be supported within communities rather than hospitals. Poor or absent leadership has been identified as contributing to serious cases of abuse in health-care settings [Department of Health (DH), 2012]. This paper aims to focus on identifying the elements required for good leadership and service delivery in community forensic services (CFS).

UNLABELLED: Computerized alerts for primary care physicians, provided during visits of patients who met treatment guidelines based on their electronic medical records, are an efficient method to raise awareness to many otherwise missed cases, especially after fracture.
PURPOSE: Measure the efficacy of an automated real-time alert which was developed to assist osteoporosis management in the community.
METHODS: The study population included treatment naïve patients with T-score ≤ - 2.5 or hip or vertebral fracture in a 2 million member Israeli health fund. On each ambulatory visit to a primary

OBJECTIVE: To compare the experiences of women with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) in computer-mediated and face-to-face support groups.
METHOD: Interviews from 18 women with MBC, who were currently in computer-mediated support groups (CMSGs), were examined using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The CMSGs were in an asynchronous mailing list format; women communicated exclusively via email. All the women were also, or had previously been, in a face-to-face support group (FTFG).
RESULTS: CMSGs had both advantages and drawbacks, relative to face-to-face groups (FTFGs), for this popula

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this commentary are to: (1) identify unique aspects of communication at end-of-life as compared to more commonly studied healthcare encounters; (2) outline challenges and opportunities research team members may encounter in coding and analyzing end-of-life communication; and (3) offer recommendations for quantitative communication research teams. This commentary is based on ours and others' experiences in studying the communication among patients with terminal illnesses, their families and their providers. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether outcomes in housing, clinical status, and well-being of persons with severe mental illness and a history of homelessness differ between those in supported housing and those in community residences, two housing arrangements that substantially differ in the level of independence that is offered to its tenants.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental 18-month follow-up study was conducted with 157 persons newly entering supported housing and community residences. The housing models accepted persons with similar illness characteristics and homelessness histories, so t

Despite a clear need for mental health services in Bangladesh, there is limited access and provision, especially in areas vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Community health workers (CHWs) are commonplace primary care givers in rural communities and promise to deliver more culturally sensitive and pragmatic services. This study seeks to understand the experiences and perceptions of CHWs who have received basic training in mental health and are providing initial mental health support as the only providers of such care in underserved communities in Bangladesh. We conducted an explorato

BACKGROUND: Most older Canadians would prefer to stay in their own homes and communities rather than move to long-term care (LTC) facilities. A growing older population, limited LTC capacity, and costs have increased demand for initiatives that enable people to age in their communities for as long as possible.
METHODS: Data from the 2019/2020 Canadian Health Survey on Seniors were used to estimate the prevalence of four types of supports and services (SSs) that assist with living in the community: home adaptations, informal care, home care, and community support services. Separate multivariab

BACKGROUND: For individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) re-entering the community after incarceration, peer navigator (PN) support is increasingly implemented to support treatment initiation and continuity. However, little is known about the specific services PNs deliver in real-time encounters, contexts in which these services occur, and how they address barriers that affect access to medications for OUD (MOUD). This study presents the first empirically derived typology of PN support for criminal legal-involved (CLI) adults with OUD.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to understand how MAiDHouse's services shape the experiences of grief and bereavement.
DESIGN: This was a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews. Interview transcripts were coded in duplicate and then analysed with a content-analysis approach through MaxQDA. We developed themes deductively based on a previously published framework and inductively from the data.
SETTING: MAiDHouse is a community-based, national, non-profit organisation and registered charity that provides those eligible to receive medical assistance in dying (MAiD) with a suppo

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common malignancy and second leading cause of death worldwide. However, the screening rate, which is a typical preventive measure, remains low. A community pharmacy pharmacist (CPP)-mediated procedure was used to increase the CRC screening rate. A total of 37 community pharmacies in Kagoshima, a core city in Japan, participated in this study. The results were statistically compared with the results of two procedures in Kagoshima City: hospital/clinic institution-mediated and health examination institution-mediated procedures. The cost was set at 1,100

Both New York State (NYS) and the United States have experienced heightened levels of opioid overdose death and prevalence of opioid use in recent decades. While evidence-based practices (EBPs) to address opioid use and prevent overdose fatalities exist, their reach in many communities remains limited. Persistent systems-level barriers must be overcome to support and sustain effective EBP implementation. This paper describes the Systems Think Tank (STT), a community-engaged approach that promoted the use of systems thinking skills and system dynamics (SD) modeling for the purpose of local acti

AIMS: To investigate what it is about community-based perinatal mental health peer support from trained volunteers that works, for whom, in what circumstances, in what respects, and why; and build a change model that includes positive and negative mechanisms and outcomes.
METHODS: Realist evaluation methods based on semi-structured interviews were used to create a change model for a third sector programme in England.
RESULTS: Mothers who received peer support (n = 20), peer support volunteers (n = 27), and programme staff (n = 9) were interviewed. Positive impact on mothers was primarily bas

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) disorders are a group of ultra-rare, inherited, lysosomal storage diseases caused by enzyme deficiencies that result in accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in cells throughout the body including the brain, typically leading to early death. Current treatments do not address the progressive cognitive impairment observed in patients with neuronopathic MPS disease. The rarity and clinical heterogeneity of these disorders as well as pre-existing brain disease in clinically diagnosed patients make the development of new therapeutics utilizing a traditional regulator
