Effects of Mixed-Gender Competition: Choking under Pressure in a Dynamic Tournament.

In sports, there has been a recent and active movement to promote mixed-gender competitions for achieving gender equality in the field. However, the current debate regarding its effects limitedly focuses on balancing the number of opportunities for females and neglects its effect on athlete performance. To address this gap, this study investigated whether and how mixed-gender competitions mitigate gender-specific disadvantages of interim leaders in dynamic tournaments from the perspective of choking under pressure. Using data from 127 international segregated-gender single and mixed-gender pai

Ethics of Regulating Competition for Women with Hyperandrogenism.

The International Association for Athletics Federations (IAAF) has been granted 2 years to submit further evidence showing a correlation between higher levels of testosterone and a competitive advantage. This article first presents the case of Caster Semenya, which triggered the drafting by IAAF of the regulations on eligibility of female athletes to compete in the female category in 2011. Then the IAAF regulations are critically analyzed from a scientific and ethical point of view. Finally, the Court of Arbitration for Sport decision to suspend the regulations pending further evidence provide

Newborn neurons compete with neuronal ensembles to moderate behavioral responses to stress.

Newborn neurons in the adult hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) are hyperexcitable, competitive cells involved in behavioral responses to stress and antidepressants. The role and the mechanisms underlying the competitiveness of the newborn neurons in moderating behavioral responses to stress have not yet been comprehensively investigated. Using FosTRAP2 transgenic mice in the learned helplessness (LH) paradigm, we report that voluntary running, a guideline-supported intervention for depression, induces neurogenesis, and that the newly generated neurons compete with LH-TRAPed neurons, thereby reduc

Steady-state kinetic characterization and mechanistic modeling of human lactate dehydrogenase A as a reference framework for inhibitor screening.

Human lactate dehydrogenase A (hLDH-A) is a key enzyme in cancer-associated metabolic reprogramming, catalyzing the reversible interconversion of pyruvate and lactate coupled with the NADH/NAD+ redox pair. A rigorous kinetic reference is therefore essential for the reliable evaluation of hLDH-A modulation, particularly in the context of enzyme-based drug screening. In this study, the steady-state kinetics of hLDH-A were systematically characterized under physiological-like conditions by analyzing both forward and reverse reactions. Apparent kinetic parameters were determined using the Michaeli

The effect of social settings and olfactory environments on spontaneous movement synchrony.

Interpersonal synchrony refers to the temporal coordination between two individuals, signaling the coupling of their behaviors. Optimal movement synchrony in dyads is linked to more affiliative behavior, cooperation, and trust. However, there is limited research on how the sensory environment impacts interpersonal synchrony. One significant environmental factor influencing human behavior and social interactions is ambient odors. This study aimed to examine the effect of ambient odor on interpersonal synchrony, particularly in-phase movement synchrony. Motion energy analysis and windowed cross-

Demolishing the competition: the longitudinal link between competitive video games, competitive gambling, and aggression.

The majority of research on the link between video games and aggression has focused on the violent content in games. In contrast, recent experimental research suggests that it is video game competition, not violence, that has the greatest effect on aggression in the short-term. However, no researchers have examined the long-term relationship between video game competition and aggression. In addition, if competition in video games is a significant reason for the link between video game play and aggression, then other competitive activities, such as competitive gambling, also may predict aggress

Type A behavior in healthy males and females as related to physiological reactivity and blood lipids.

Type A behavior was assessed in 30 men and 30 women (ages 30-50) by a Videotaped Structured Interview (VSI). Scores for total Type A behavior as well as subcomponents (competitiveness, time urgency, hostility) were examined in relation to cardiovascular and neuroendocrine reactivity during a work day (change from a work-free day) and during laboratory-induced stress (change from resting condition). In addition, Type A and Type B males and females were compared with regard to total serum cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. The results showed relationships between 1) competi

Competitive partial inhibitors of serum albumin-catalyzed sulfur cyanolysis.

Efforts to locate the active site for sulfur cyanolysis catalyzed by bovine serum albumin have led to systematic tests of several compounds that inhibit the catalyzed reaction. Hexanoate and 5-dimethylaminonaphthalene-1-sulfonate bind at the same site and are partial inhibitors competitive with cyanide, uncompetitive with respect to sulfur. Various dansyl amino acids and 1-anilino-8-naphthalene sulfonate display the same inhibitory behavior but bis (1-anilino-8-naphthalene sulfonate) is a total inhibitor competitive with cyanide. These findings are interpreted to indicate that the cyanolysis a

A novel reindeer cyclone optimization algorithm (RCOA).

This paper introduces the Reindeer Cyclone Optimization Algorithm (RCOA), a novel metaheuristic optimization technique inspired by the survival behavior of reindeer during predator attacks in formation cyclonic storms. RCOA imitates the defense-centric cooperative behavior of reindeer, where individuals cluster together to withstand external threats. This behavior is analogous to the optimization process where exploration (global search for exploring new areas) and exploitation (local refinement to copy or learn from neighbor in cyclonic form) are carefully balanced. The algorithm has been ext

What makes players stay: Using real gameplay data to explore players' game loyalty to E-sports MOBA games.

In recent years, esports and Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games have gained substantial global popularity, yet the mechanisms underlying player loyalty in the MOBA context remain insufficiently integrated within a unified theoretical framework. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response framework, this study proposes a three-stage model in which game cooperativeness and competitiveness serve as stimuli, self-efficacy and immersion as organism variables, and game loyalty as the response. Using DOTA 2 as a representative MOBA game, we conducted two studies to test the proposed model. St

Dominance rank, facial morphology and testes size in male white-faced capuchins: evidence for pre- and post-mating competition.

Male reproductive success is determined by the interplay of female mate choice and male-male competition, often linked to dominance rank in social animals. Across taxa, elaborate ornaments, such as bright coloration or large antlers, often function as badges of status, signalling male competitive ability to rivals. In species where females mate with multiple males, post-mating sperm competition also plays an important role in male reproductive success and is associated with larger relative testes size. We investigate the relationship between morphological features and dominance rank in wild ma

Structural or dispositional? An experimental investigation of the experience of winning in social casino games (and impulsivity) on subsequent gambling behaviors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the present research, we experimentally investigated whether the experience of winning (i.e., inflated payout rates) in a social casino game influenced social casino gamers' subsequent decision to gamble for money. Furthermore, we assessed whether facets of dispositional impulsivity - negative and positive urgency in particular - also influenced participants' subsequent gambling. METHODS: Social casino gamers who were also current gamblers (N = 318) were asked to play a social casino game to assess their perceptions of the game in exchange for $3. Unbeknownst to them,

Cooperation versus competition in a mass emergency evacuation: a new laboratory simulation and a new theoretical model.

Virtual reality technology is argued to be suitable to the simulation study of mass evacuation behavior, because of the practical and ethical constraints in researching this field. This article describes three studies in which a new virtual reality paradigm was used, in which participants had to escape from a burning underground rail station. Study 1 was carried out in an immersion laboratory and demonstrated that collective identification in the crowd was enhanced by the (shared) threat embodied in emergency itself. In Study 2, high-identification participants were more helpful and pushed les

Higher dominance rank is associated with lower glucocorticoids in wild female baboons: A rank metric comparison.

In vertebrates, glucocorticoid secretion occurs in response to energetic and psychosocial stressors that trigger the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Measuring glucocorticoid concentrations can therefore shed light on the stressors associated with different social and environmental variables, including dominance rank. Using 14,172 fecal samples from 237 wild female baboons, we test the hypothesis that high-ranking females experience fewer psychosocial and/or energetic stressors than lower-ranking females. We predicted that high-ranking females would have lower fecal glucocorticoid (f

The paradox of cooperation benefits.

It seems obvious that as the benefits of cooperation increase, the share of cooperators in the population should also increase. It is well known that positive assortment between cooperative types, for instance in spatially structured populations, provide better conditions for the evolution of cooperation than complete mixing. This study demonstrates that, assuming positive assortment, under most conditions higher cooperation benefits also increase the share of cooperators. On the other hand, under a specified range of payoff values, when at least two payoff parameters are modified, the reverse

Evolution of cooperation in spatial public goods games with common resource dynamics.

Investment in a common resource shared by all players is difficult to evolve despite higher returns because a non-investor (free-rider) always receives more than an investor (altruist). This situation is referred to as the Tragedy of the Commons and is often observed in various biological systems including environmental problems of human society. Punishment and reputation are effective mechanisms but require cooperator's ability to identify free-riders. Volunteering can work in anonymous public goods games but this requires voluntary participation, which is not always the case. Here, we show t

Social learning promotes institutions for governing the commons.

Theoretical and empirical research highlights the role of punishment in promoting collaborative efforts. However, both the emergence and the stability of costly punishment are problematic issues. It is not clear how punishers can invade a society of defectors by social learning or natural selection, or how second-order free-riders (who contribute to the joint effort but not to the sanctions) can be prevented from drifting into a coercion-based regime and subverting cooperation. Here we compare the prevailing model of peer-punishment with pool-punishment, which consists in committing resources,
