Treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome: recommendations of recent evidence-based interdisciplinary guidelines with special emphasis on complementary and alternative therapies.

Objective. Current evidence indicates that there is no single ideal treatment for fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). First choice treatment options remain debatable, especially concerning the importance of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments. Methods. Three evidence-based interdisciplinary guidelines on FMS in Canada, Germany, and Israel were compared for their first choice and CAM-recommendations. Results. All three guidelines emphasized a patient-tailored approach according to the key symptoms. Aerobic exercise, cognitive behavioral therapy, and multicomponent therapy were firs

The Potential of Complementary and Alternative Therapies in Improving Diarrhea-Predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Strategies for Long-Term Efficacy.

Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a common disorder of gut-brain interaction. Current therapeutic approaches frequently fail to provide sustained symptom relief. In recent years, complementary and alternative therapies-particularly traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and dietary interventions-have attracted increasing attention due to their low side-effect profiles and are gradually becoming important adjunct strategies in the management of IBS-D. This review systematically summarizes the research advances of the past decade across these three therapeutic categori

Use of complementary therapies for chronic pain management in patients with reported Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or hypermobility spectrum disorders.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and related Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) are debilitating connective tissue disorders that feature a prominent pain component for which there are limited therapeutic options for pain management. Consequently, many patients try various non-prescribed treatments, including complementary and alternative therapies that have not been well studied in the EDS/HSD patient population. We surveyed over 500 individuals through the EDS Society who reported having been diagnosed with EDS or HSD to ascertain what complementary and alternative therapies were used and t

Use of complementary and alternative therapies by patients self-reporting arthritis or rheumatism: results from a nationwide canadian survey.

OBJECTIVE: Arthritis or rheumatism (A/R) often leads patients to experiment with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM); we investigated the factors associated with use of CAM. METHODS: The source of the data is the cross sectional household component of the 1996-97 National Population Health Survey of the health status and behaviors of Canadians. The survey sample is based on 66,000 persons aged 20 years and older, representing 21 million adults. Cross tabulations were used to estimate the percentage of adults with A/R who used CAM. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify

Recent advances in complementary and replacement therapy with nutraceuticals in combating gastrointestinal illnesses.

The digestive system provides nourishment to the whole body. Disorders in this system would result in many associated illnesses as the body is deprived of essential nutrients. Gastrointestinal diseases, in particular, gastric ulceration, inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer have become more prevalent in all population age groups. While this can be attributed to diet and lifestyle changes, the measures to combat these illnesses with conventional drugs is losing popularity owing to the harsh side effects, drug resistance and lack of patient compliance. The focus of this review is to

Active theater as a complementary therapy for Parkinson's disease rehabilitation: a pilot study.

Most medical treatments of Parkinson's disease (PD) are aimed at the reduction of motor symptoms. However, even when motor improvements are evident, patients often report a deterioration of their daily lives. Thus, to achieve a global improvement in personal well-being, not only drugs, but also complementary therapies, such as physical exercise, occupational and speech therapy, and active music therapy, have been used. We hypothesized that theater could reduce clinical disability and improve the quality of life of PD patients (primary end points) more efficiently than other complementary thera

Journal writing as a complementary therapy for reactive depression: a rehabilitation teaching program.

Brief, recurrent, reactive, or situational depression is a common and costly comorbidity that affects chronically ill patients and their family members. This article describes a program that teaches those individuals how to monitor and cope with symptoms of depression by writing daily in a journal. Twenty patients and family members attended teaching sessions at which videotaped scenes of other patients managing symptoms of depression were shown. After viewing the six scenes, participants wrote about their reactions to each scene and listed the emotions they had experienced that were similar t

Bioactive Compounds Formulated in Phytosomes Administered as Complementary Therapy for Metabolic Disorders.

Metabolic disorders (MDs), including dyslipidemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity and cardiovascular diseases are a significant threat to human health, despite the many therapies developed for their treatment. Different classes of bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, and triterpenes have shown therapeutic potential in ameliorating various disorders. Most of these compounds present low bioavailability when administered orally, being rapidly metabolized in the digestive tract and liver which makes their metabolites less effective. Moreov

Is carbonic anhydrase inhibition useful as a complementary therapy of Covid-19 infection?

The ongoing Covid-19 is a contagious disease, and it is characterised by different symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Rising concerns about Covid-19 have severely affected the healthcare system in all countries as the Covid-19 outbreak has developed at a rapid rate all around the globe. Intriguing, a clinically used drug, acetazolamide (a specific inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase, CA, EC 4.2.1.1), is used to treat high-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE), showing a high degree of clinical similarities with the pulmonary disease caused by Covid-19. In this context, this prelimi

Interactions between antiretroviral therapy and complementary and alternative medicine: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: The use of complementary and alternative medicine including herbal medicine (phytotherapy), vitamins, minerals and food supplements is frequent among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) who take antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, but is often not known by their prescribing physicians. Some drug-supplement combinations may result in clinically meaningful interactions. AIMS: In this literature review, we aimed to investigate the evidence for complementary and alternative medicine interactions with ARVs. Application of Herbaceous Medications for Inflammatory Bowel Disease as a Complementary and Alternative Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Conventional medicine for the treatment of IBD is prevailingly composed of sulfadiazine, 5-aminosalicylic acid, glucocorticoid, and immunosuppressants, which have the merits of alleviating intestine inflammation, but long-term use of these drugs may cause toxic side effects; additionally, these drugs may be expensive. In the pursuit of novel and more economic therapies, patients may increasingly look at complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Recently, CAM is increasingly favored by the general public on account of its safety, low toxicity, and effectiveness. As a branch of C

Cocrystallizing and Codelivering Complementary Drugs to Multidrugresistant Tuberculosis Bacteria in Perfecting Multidrug Therapy.

Bacteria cells exhibit multidrug resistance in one of two ways: by raising the genetic expression of multidrug efflux pumps or by accumulating several drug-resistant components in many genes. Multidrug-resistive tuberculosis bacteria are treated by multidrug therapy, where a few certain antibacterial drugs are administered together to kill a bacterium jointly. A major drawback of conventional multidrug therapy is that the administration never ensures the reaching of different drug molecules to a particular bacterium cell at the same time, which promotes growing drug resistivity step-wise. As a
