Degradation and environmental risk of surfactants after the application of compost sludge to the soil.

In this work, the degradation of anionic and non-ionic surfactants in agricultural soil amended with sewage sludge is reported. The compounds analysed were: linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) with a 10-13 carbon alkylic chain, and nonylphenolic compounds (NPE), including nonylphenol (NP) and nonylphenol ethoxylates with one and two ethoxy groups (NP1EO and NP2EO). The degradation studies were carried out under winter (12.7°C) and summer (22.4°C) conditions in Andalusia region. The concentration of LAS was reduced to 2% of the initial concentration 100 day after sludge-application to the soi

Rates of production of hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen from irradiated compost.

The use of organic matter from compost to promote the catalytic photodegradation of micropollutants by solar light appears to be environmentally promising. However, quantitative evaluation of the photodegradation potential of the compost is needed. Our goal was to measure the formation rate of hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen, two strongly oxidant species, from irradiated compost organic matter. These two reactive species were photogenerated in all of our extracts regardless of the origin of the compost or the extraction procedure; however, their formation rates increased with composting t

Influence of soil properties and aging on the toxicity of copper on compost worm and barley.

Influence of soil properties and aging on Cu partitioning and toxicity was assessed on 10 artificial soils constituted using a statistical design considering pH (5.5 and 7.5), organic matter (1-30% [w/w]), and clay content (5-35% [w/w]). Total Cu as well as water-, CaCl2-, and diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extracted Cu fractions were determined for each soil mixture. Ecotoxic effect was assessed by determining growth inhibition of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and compost worm (Eisenia fetida) mortality. Analyses were repeated after a 16-wk aging period of the soils at pH 7.5 (8 x

Effects of hydrocarbon enrichment on trichloroethylene biodegradation and microbial populations in finished compost.

This study focused on the capacity of finished compost, often used as packing material in biofiltration units, to support microbial biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE). Finished compost was enriched with methane or propane (10% head space) to stimulate cometabolic biodegradation of gaseous TCE. Successful hydrocarbon enrichment, as indicated by rapid depletion of hydrocarbon gas and measurable growth of hydrocarbon-utilizing micro-organisms, occurred within a week. Within batch reactor flasks, approximately 75% of head space TCE (1-40 ppmv) was rapidly sorbed onto compost material. Up to

Assessment of the effectiveness of composting for the reduction of toxicity and mutagenicity of explosive-contaminated soil.

Composting is being developed as an economical method for remediating explosive-contaminated soils and has been found to reduce the concentrations of target contaminants such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX). However, whether environmental safety is improved by composting can be determined only by assessing the effects of the treated material on living organisms. In this study two bioassays, the Mutatox assay and the earthworm acute toxicity test, were used to evaluate the effectiveness of a pilotscale composting demonstration in reducing environ

Hazard to man and the environment posed by the use of urban waste compost: a review.

This review presents the current state of knowledge on the relationship between the environment and the use of municipal waste compost in terms of health risk assessment. The hazards stem from chemical and microbiological agents whose nature and magnitude depend heavily on the degree of sorting and on the composting methods. Three main routes of exposure can be determined and are quantified in the literature: (i) The ingestion of soil/compost mixtures by children, mostly in cases of pica, can be a threat because of the amount of lead, chromium, cadmium, PCDD/F and fecal streptococci that can b

Matric water potential as an ecological determinant in compost, a substrate dense system.

Water is a critical ecological factor in substrate dense matric ecosystems, of which composting systems are an example. Excessive moisture inhibits aerobic metabolism because of oxygen diffusion limitations. How a lack of water impedes composting activity has not been previously considered. An investigation of the relationship of matric water potential (water held by physical attractions) to gravimetric water content was carried out in a laboratory composting system using a sewage sludge and wood chip substrate. The gravimetric-matric water relationship was best fit by a 2∘ polynomial regressi

Reduction of allelochemicals during composting of lignocellulosic biomass: identification and transformation mechanism of allelochemicals.

The terrestrial plant Lantana camara L. is well-known terrestrial plant because of its allelopathic activities, which affect the germination and yield of other crops. The study aimed to convert this plant into a value-added compost product, as its characterization revealed significant amounts of volatile solids and nutrients. The study also sought to investigate the identification and transformation of toxic organic compounds during the in-vessel composting of L. camara using a 550 L rotary drum composter. As per the Central Composite Design - Response Surface Methodology (CCD - RSM), the opti

Implementing biowaste source segregation for sustainable decentralized composting schemes in Tiassalé, southern Côte d'Ivoire.

Research in sub-Saharan Africa has shown failures in most of municipal waste composting initiatives because of bad-quality composts due to the lack of biowaste source segregation. Until now, very few biowaste source-segregation initiatives have been carried out on this part of the world. This study aimed at assessing the biowaste sorting efficiency and the attitude of households towards a pilot biowaste source-segregation system linked to a decentralized composting plant in Tiassalé. For this purpose, the impurity rate of source-segregated biowaste was monitored through the first year of imple

Metagenomic insights to effective elimination of resistomes in food waste composting by lime addition.

Food waste contains abundant resistomes, including antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes (ARGs and MRGs), which pose risks to the environment and human health. Composting can be used for food waste treatment, but it fails to effectively eliminate these resistomes. Thus, this study investigated the performance of lime to regulate the dynamics and mobility of ARGs and MRGs in food waste composting by metagenomics. Genome-resolved analysis was further conducted to identify the ARGs and MRGs hosts and their horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events. Results showed that lime addition at 1 % (wet

Bioaerosol emission characteristics and potential risks during composting: Focus on pathogens and antimicrobial resistance.

In this study, we analyzed bioaerosol emission characteristics and potential risks of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) during composting using the impaction culture method and metagenomic sequencing. The results showed that the highly saturated water vapor in the emission gas mitigated particulate matter emission during the thermophilic period. About the bioaerosols, the airborne aerobic bacterial emissions were suppressed as composting enters the mature period, and the airborne fungi are usually present as single-cell or small-cell aggregates (< 3.3 µm). In addition, the microbial community str

Organic matter stabilization and phosphorus activation during vegetable waste composting: Multivariate and multiscale investigation.

The conversion of organic matter and P in the waste composting process affects the efficiency of the composted product. However, the addition of microbial inoculants may improve the conversion characteristics of organic matter and P. In this study, straw-decomposing microbial inoculant (SDMI) was added to investigate its effects on the organic matter stabilization and phosphorus activation during the composting of vegetable waste (VWs). Aliphatic carboxyl-containing compounds were degraded during composting, but the stability of the organic matter and P was improved. The addition of SDMI promo

Superphosphate, biochar, and a microbial inoculum regulate phytotoxicity and humification during chicken manure composting.

The germination index (GI) is the best index for evaluating compost phytotoxicity and maturity. In order to improve GI and reduce phytotoxicity of chicken manure compost, superphosphate, biochar, and a microbial inoculum were added in this study. Maturity indices (pH, electrical conductivity, and GI), water-soluble ion, organic matter, humic acid, humic precursor contents, and the bacteria community were analyzed during the experiment. NH4+, volatile fatty acids, and humic acid strongly affected the GI, which increased as the humic acid content increased and the volatile fatty acid and NH4+ co

Industrial Composting of Sewage Sludge: Study of the Bacteriome, Sanitation, and Antibiotic-Resistant Strains.

Wastewater treatment generates a huge amount of sewage sludge, which is a source of environmental pollution. Among the alternatives for the management of this waste, industrial composting stands out as one of the most relevant. The objective of this study was to analyze the bacterial population linked to this process and to determine its effectiveness for the reduction, and even elimination, of microorganisms and pathogens present in these organic wastes. For this purpose, the bacteriome and the fecal bacteria contamination of samples from different sewage sludge industrial composting faciliti

Combined effects of composting and antibiotic administration on cattle manure-borne antibiotic resistance genes.

BACKGROUND: Research is needed to delineate the relative and combined effects of different antibiotic administration and manure management practices in either amplifying or attenuating the potential for antibiotic resistance to spread. Here, we carried out a comprehensive parallel examination of the effects of small-scale (> 55 °C × 3 days) static and turned composting of manures from dairy and beef cattle collected during standard antibiotic administration (cephapirin/pirlimycin or sulfamethazine/chlortetracycline/tylosin, respectively), versus from untreated cattle, on "resistomes" (total an

Comparative evaluation of four household food‑waste composting systems for decentralized circular waste management.

The study evaluated four household food waste composting systems using replicated trials (n = 3 per device) with standardized feedstock loads to compare temperature dynamics, physicochemical parameters, compost maturity, and microbiological safety. Although electric units automated mixing and heating, they did not achieve faster overall stabilization, and all devices produced semistabilized material requiring extended curing. Economic and environmental assessments indicated trade‑offs between operational costs, energy use, and waste diversion potential. Screening of culturable isolates did not
