Mineral content and strength of lumbar vertebrae. A cadaver study.

Fifty-two cadaveric spine-motion segments were tested in compression alone and in combined compression-flexion to determine whether the compressive strength of lumbar vertebrae varied with the direction of the applied load, that is, whether similar relationships existed between the compressive strength and the amount of bone mineral depending on the direction of the loading. The bone mineral content (BMC) ranged between 1.6 and 5.8 g/cm and the ultimate strength between 810 and 10,090 N. The BMC of the motion segments was correlated with their strength irrespective of degree of flexion during

Experimental study on permeability of dry and wet high rank coal specimens related to stress and mechanical properties.

Permeability of coal reservoirs is a key determinant of coalbed methane well productivity. The evolutionary behavior of permeability in response to stress and mechanical properties is fundamentally linked to the optimization of development schemes and the augmentation of production capacity. Dry and wet high-rank coal specimens were obtained in the southern Qinshui Basin and subjected to permeability measurements under confining pressure, as well as uniaxial compression and Brazilian splitting experiments. These experiments systematically investigated the relationships among permeability, stre

Seawater-Activated Mineral Synergy in Sulfoaluminate Cement: Corrosion Resistance Optimization via Orthogonal Design.

Mineral admixtures exhibit significant enhancement effects on the seawater corrosion resistance of sulfoaluminate cement (SAC). This study systematically investigates the influence mechanisms of fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF), and slag powder (SP) on the physicochemical properties of SAC-based materials. Experimental results demonstrate that FA effectively enhances the fluidity of fresh SAC paste while mitigating drying shrinkage. Under standard curing conditions, the compressive strength of SAC mortar decreases with increasing FA content, reaching optimal performance at a 5% replacement level

Relationships between material properties and CT scan data of cortical bone with and without metastatic lesions.

Breast, prostate, lung, and other cancers can metastasize to bone and lead to pathological fracture. To lay the groundwork for new clinical techniques for assessing the risk of pathological fracture, we identified relationships between density measured using quantitative computed tomography (rhoQCT), longitudinal mechanical properties, and ash density (rhoAsh) of cortical bone from femoral diaphyses with and without metastatic lesions from breast, prostate, and lung cancer (bone with metastases from six donors; bone without metastases from one donor with cancer and two donors without cancer).

Evaluation of sulfate resistance of cement mortars containing black rice husk ash.

In this paper, black rice husk ashes (BRHAs), which are agrowastes from an electricity generating power plant and a rice mill, were ground and used as a partial cement replacement. The durability of mortars under sulfate attack including expansion and compressive strength loss were investigated. For parametric study, BRHA were used as a Portland cement Type 1 replacement at the levels of 0%, 10%, 30%, and 50% by weight of binder. The water-to-binder ratios were 0.55 and 0.65. For the durability of mortar exposed to sulfate attack, 5% sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) soluti

A Novel High-Strength Dental Resin Composite Based on BaSi2O2N2 for Caries Restoration.

Dental resin composite (DRC) is the most widely used restorative material for caries filling treatments. However, DRC has limitations, including incomplete curing and suboptimal mechanical properties, which restrict its clinical application. In this study, we combined the mechanoluminescent material BaSi2O2N2:Eu2+ (BSON) with DRC to create a novel DRC (BD) capable of emitting blue light under occlusal force. This study explored a resin composite with enhanced curing efficiency and improved mechanical properties. Characterization of the mechanical properties demonstrated that, as the BSON dopin

Investigation of the Influence of Process Parameters on the Physicochemical and Functional Properties of Oil-Based Composites.

The increasing consumption of edible oils has resulted in a parallel rise in waste cooking oil (WCO), a harmful waste stream but one that also represents a promising raw material. In this study, oil-based binders were synthesised from WCO using various reagents: Sulfuric(VI) acid, hydrobromic acid, acetic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, zinc acetate, ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and their selected mixtures. The manufacturing process was optimised, and the composites were evaluated for physicochemical and mechanical properties, including compressive strength, bending strength, and water abs

Numerical investigation of the composite mechanical behavior of grouted rock members with rough fractures.

Incomplete grout filling in natural rough fractures is common in grouting practices and alters the mechanical behavior of rock masses. This study numerically simulates slurry diffusion in fractures with different joint roughness coefficients (JRC). Rock models with varying roughness and filling degrees are tested under uniaxial compression and constant normal stiffness (CNS) direct shear. Results show that uniaxial compressive strength depends weakly on filling level but strongly on roughness. Higher roughness intensifies stress concentration, accelerates grout damage, and reduces stress trans

The influence of stress path and flaw morphology on the failure mechanism and mechanical properties of rock masses.

The macroscopic failure of rock masses is essentially the result of the propagation, interaction, and eventual coalescence of internal defects such as flaws under stress. Given the widespread presence of three-dimensional (3D) flaws in rock mass engineering, it is crucial to investigate their failure mechanisms and mechanical properties. This research employs a meso-damage numerical simulation method to systematically investigate the failure process and mechanical parameters of heterogeneous rock masses containing surface flaws, through-going flaws, and internal flaws under various stresses, f

A robust, low swelling, and lipid-lubricated hydrogel for bionic articular cartilage substitute.

Healthy articular cartilage can achieve high load-bearing capacity and the most effective lubricated surface. Inspired by the articular cartilage, a lipid-lubricated hydrogel with excellent mechanical strength and remarkable lubrication was designed and synthesized. The lipid-lubricated hydrogel could contribute to high strength and stiffness (compressive strength of 5.8 MPa and compressive modulus of 4.7 MPa at 50% strain), and it could recover more than 98% of original mechanical properties in a short time after loading-unloading. In addition, the friction coefficient of lipid-lubricated hyd
