Near-Infrared Optical Imaging for Diagnosis of Maxillary Sinusitis.

Computed tomography (CT) is the current gold standard imaging for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) but is limited by cost, risk of radiation, and difficulty of being performed in the typical outpatient primary care setting. We describe the novel use of a low-cost, handheld technology to deliver an intraoral near-infrared (NIR) wavelength light to optically image the maxillary sinuses. Digital images were collected for subjects presenting with sinus disease using an intraoral NIR light source for transillumination of the maxillary sinuses, captured by a modified digital single-lens reflex camera. Hearing aids in the real world: typical automatic behavior of expansion, directionality, and noise management.

BACKGROUND: Automatic DSP (digital signal processing) features, widely available in hearing aids today, are useful because they alleviate the need for the hearing aid wearer to manually adjust the hearing aid as listening conditions change. Although the theoretical basis for the design of these features may be sound, little is known about their behavior in the real world. Data logging offers a glimpse into the life of the individual hearing aid wearer, but there are no published data to date that provide a frame of reference for the interpretation of this information. Further, data logging in

Implementing digital devices to maintain family connections during the COVID-19 pandemic: Experience of a large academic urban hospital.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown imposed drastic measures at hospitals internationally to rapidly pivot their approaches to patient care. Early on when the pandemic was declared, hospitals responded to local public health restrictions by limiting all non-essential visits for their patients. Digital devices allowed Canadians to remain connected with their friends and families during the imposed isolation restrictions. The aim of this clinical perspective is to share the experience with the immediate implementation of digital connections for patients by exploring the impact as well a

Handheld Optical Coherence Tomography in a Young Infant With Albinism and Fovea Plana.

We present handheld optical coherence tomography (OCT) diagnosis of Grade 4 foveal hypoplasia (fovea plana) in a 28-day-old infant with albinism. Grade 4 foveal hypoplasia is characterized by the absence of the foveal pit, absence of outer segment lengthening, and absence of outer nuclear layer widening. Binocular visual acuity at 58 months follow-up was 1.2 logarithm of the minimal angle of resolution (logMAR). We describe our handheld OCT acquisition protocol and compare the morphological features with a healthy, age-matched control subject.

An evaluation of diabetes self-management applications for Android smartphones.

We reviewed diabetes apps for Android smartphones. We compiled a list of free and paid apps in April 2011 by searching the Android Market for apps which could track self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), diabetes medications or calculate prandial insulin dosages. Two reviewers independently evaluated six features per app, using a five-point Likert scale. The sum of the six ratings was the composite usability score, and the mean score of an app's features was the average usability score. Of the 80 Android diabetes apps identified, 42 unique apps were eligible for the study. SMBG recording was

The longitudinal association between early-life screen viewing and abdominal adiposity-findings from a multiethnic birth cohort study.

IMPORTANCE: Screen viewing in adults has been associated with greater abdominal adiposity, with the magnitude of associations varying by sex and ethnicity, but the evidence is lacking at younger ages. We aimed to investigate sex- and ethnic-specific associations of screen-viewing time at ages 2 and 3 years with abdominal adiposity measured by magnetic resonance imaging at age 4.5 years. METHODS: The Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes is an ongoing prospective mother-offspring cohort study. Parents/caregivers reported the time their child spent viewing television, handheld device

Three-Dimensional Handheld Scanning to Quantify Head-Shape Changes in Spring-Assisted Surgery for Sagittal Craniosynostosis.

Three-dimensional (3D) imaging is an important tool for diagnostics, surgical planning, and evaluation of surgical outcomes in craniofacial procedures. Gold standard for acquiring 3D imaging is computed tomography that entails ionizing radiations and, in young children, a general anaesthesia. Three-dimensional photographic imaging is an alternative method to assess patients who have undergone calvarial reconstructive surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of 3D handheld scanning photography in a cohort of patients who underwent spring-assisted correction surgery for scaphocep

Effectiveness of an interactive music tablet intervention to reduce procedural anxiety in children: a randomized controlled trial.

Procedural anxiety in children is common and associated with maladaptive behavior, reduced cooperation, and increased perioperative stress. Although music-based interventions show promise, few are designed for routine clinical care. We evaluated an interactive tablet-based music intervention ("MuMa") for reducing procedural anxiety in children aged 3-11 undergoing elective surgery. We conducted a single-center, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial including 80 children undergoing elective surgery and their caregivers. Participants were randomized to receive the MuMa intervention preoper

A randomized controlled trial of a tablet-based intervention to address predonation fears among high school donors.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have shown donation-related fear to be associated with decreased donor confidence and an increased risk for vasovagal reactions. This study examined the effects of a predonation intervention that provided fearful donors with suggestions for coping. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Using a tablet-based application, high school donors (49.4% female) answered a question regarding their fear of having blood drawn. Those who reported fear were randomly assigned to either a control (n = 930) or an intervention (n = 911) group. Donors in the control group rated their confidence in
