PURPOSE: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common live birth defect and a proportion of these patients have chronic hypoxia. Chronic hypoxia leads to secondary erythrocytosis resulting in microvascular dysfunction and increased thrombosis risk. To investigate the role of Interleukin-1 (IL-1) in the pathobiology of the cornea, we measured IL-1 beta concentration in tear fluid samples from patients with corneal disease. Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a severe form of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, characterized by extensive sloughing of mucous membranes and skin. It is associated with mortality rates of up to 70% and significant ocular morbidity in long-term survivors. We present a case of TEN with severe bilateral ocular involvement in whom we successfully used amniotic membrane grafts to treat the ocular surface during the acute phase of the disease.
