Glycogen storage disease type I (GSD I) is characterized by impaired production of glucose from glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis resulting in severe fasting hypoglycaemia. The aim of the present study was to examine the efficacy of a continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring system (CGMS MiniMed), to determine the magnitude and significance of hypoglycaemia in GSD I and to evaluate the efficacy of its dietary treatment. Four children with GSD I were studied over a 72-h period. Results indicated that the values recorded with continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring were highly correlated w

OBJECTIVE: Continuous glucose monitoring is recommended for pregnant women with type 1 diabetes, due to associations with decreased hemoglobin A1c and large for gestational age. However, its benefit in type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes is not established. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared usage of continuous glucose monitoring to self-monitoring of blood glucose both across and within diabetes in pregnancy and determined which glucose metrics are associated with perinatal outcomes, to potentially inform treatment targets in diabetes in pregnancy.

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is rapidly becoming a vital tool in the management of type 1 diabetes. Its use has been shown to improve glycaemic management and reduce the risk of hypoglycaemic events. The cost of CGM remains a barrier to its widespread application. We aimed to identify and synthesize evidence about the cost-effectiveness of utilizing CGM in patients with type 1 diabetes. Studies were identified from MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Library from January 2010 to February 2022. Those that assessed the cost-effectiveness of CGM compared to self-monitored blood glucose (SMBG) in

The now-routine clinical deployment of continuous glucose monitoring has demonstrated benefit in real-world settings. We make the case that continuous glucose monitoring can help re-examine, at scale, the role that (stress) hyperglycaemia plays in fuelling organ dysfunction after tissue trauma. Provided robust perioperative data do emerge, well-established continuous glucose monitoring technology could soon help transform the perioperative landscape.

Infants with an ileostomy can be at high risk of hypoglycemia because of inadequate nutritional intake; however, there are no reports investigating blood glucose (BG) in infants with ileostomy. We experienced a case of an extremely low birth weight infant who was born at 24 wk of gestation and weighted 623 g. He received an ileostomy because of an intestinal perforation. After the ileostomy, he had recurrent hypoglycemia. Continuous glucose monitoring showed fluctuation of BG levels (postprandial BG elevations and subsequent declines) and non-fasting hypoglycemia, which were undetectable with

As the global incidence of diabetes and its associated treatment costs rise, continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) constitute a valuable tool for patient self-monitoring. However, market dominance of a few well-known brands, predominantly in populations with type 1 diabetes, limits the adoption of more cost-effective alternatives that might offer improved clinical outcomes. To address this, an expert roundtable evaluated barriers to efficient CGM use, identifying challenges such as regional care board variations, lack of patient-centred prescribing and insufficient training for both patients and

The FreeStyle Libre (Abbott) is a human continuous glucose monitor sensor that has been used to monitor glucose concentrations in dogs and cats with diabetes. This sensor and other similar continuous glucose monitoring sensors are increasingly popular in veterinary medicine, specifically for management of diabetes mellitus. The sensor decreases veterinary visits and reduces the stress (and expense) of multiple blood sample collections needed to produce glucose curves. However, there are no established guidelines for sensor placement in small animals and, to date, no substantial complications h

Fully automated insulin delivery (i.e., an artificial pancreas) would revolutionize diabetes disease management, minimize negative secondary disease outcomes, and simultaneously reduce health care costs and system burdens. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is an essential aspect of the artificial pancreas. Abiotic fluorescent chemosensors play a key role in generating long-lived CGM sensors for this purpose. In this Perspective, we detail our initial discoveries of chemosensors for saccharides, as well as the development and advancement of bis((o-aminomethylphenyl)boronic acid)anthracene-bas

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are susceptible to hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia, which may lead to adverse neurodevelopment. The use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices might help in keeping glucose levels in the normal range, and reduce the need for blood sampling. However, the use of CGM might be associated with harms in the preterm infant.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of CGM versus intermittent modalities to measure glycaemia in preterm infants 1. at risk of hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia; 2. with proven hypoglycaemia; or 3. with proven hyperglycaemia.

Management of liver glycogen storage diseases (GSDs) primarily involves maintaining normoglycemia through dietary modifications and regular glucose monitoring. Self-monitoring of blood glucose is typically done 3-6 times per day, and may not sufficiently capture periods of asymptomatic hypoglycemia, particularly during sleep. Continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMS) provide 24-h continuous glucose data and have been used effectively in diabetes mellitus to monitor metabolic control and optimize treatment. This is a relatively new approach in GSDs with only a handful of studies exploring th

The purpose of this article is to describe challenges associated with successful use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) by young children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and to detail the techniques and products used to improve the duration of sensor wear. The DirecNet Study Group conducted 2 studies in 169 children with T1D between the ages of 1 and 9 years who were instructed to wear a CGM device daily. Problems related to skin irritation and sensor adhesiveness in these young children presented challenges to daily use of the CGM. Study coordinators instituted a variety of techniques using co

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) provides information about real-time glycemic exposure that is not captured by measurements of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), changes in glycemia during oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT), or Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). We propose that (1) CGM can identify dysglycemia earlier than existing approaches, (2) CGM may serve as an adjunctive diagnostic tool, and (3) CGM may eventually support independent diagnostic criteria. The strongest case is for Stage 2 type 1 diabetes (T1D), because this stage represents a critical opportunity for intervention before progressi

OBJECTIVE: Hypoglycaemia is common in neonates. Repeated hypoglycaemic episodes impose a risk of subsequent neurodevelopmental impairment. We aimed to assess the feasibility of using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in a group of infants at risk of hypoglycaemia.
DESIGN: Observational feasibility study.
SETTINGS: Level 2 neonatal unit, Norway.
PATIENTS: Infants of mothers with diabetes or infants born large for gestational age.
INTERVENTIONS: A blinded CGM-device was applied on the upper lateral thigh of the neonate shortly after birth to record tissue glucose during the infant's admiss

AIMS: Glucose monitoring is increasingly based on continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems. However, data on the accuracy of CGM within the hypoglycaemic range is sparse. This study investigated CGM accuracy within the hypoglycaemic range in three different clinical settings of hypoglycaemia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-two people with various causes of hypoglycaemia were analysed: (i) people during insulin tolerance testing (ITT) (n = 63); (ii) people with insulinoma (n = 16); and (iii) people with diabetes receiving subcutaneous insulin therapy (n = 13). CGM accuracy was evaluated for

The advancement of technology in the field of glycemic control has led to the widespread use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), which can be nowadays obtained from wearable devices equipped with a minimally invasive sensor, that is, transcutaneous needle type or implantable, and a transmitter that sends information to a receiver or smart device for data storage and display. This work aims to review the currently available software packages and tools for the analysis of CGM data. Based on the purposes of this work, 12 software packages have been identified from the literature, published un
