The mediating role of partner communication on contraceptive use among adolescent girls and young women participating in a small-group intervention in Malawi: A longitudinal analysis.

Though effective reproductive health interventions have been developed for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa, few have explored whether specific components of the interventions are responsible for observed changes in behaviour. Data for this longitudinal mediation analysis come from a quasi-experimental, sexual and reproductive health study conducted among AGYW (age 15-24) in Malawi. We assessed the extent to which the relationship between attending communication-specific small-group sessions and contraceptive use at one-year was mediated by contraceptive communicat

Use of nonpreferred contraceptive methods among women in Ohio.

OBJECTIVES: We describe the prevalence and correlates of nonuse of preferred contraceptive method among women 18-44 years of age in Ohio using contraception. STUDY DESIGN: The population-representative Ohio Survey of Women had 2529 participants in 2018-2019, with a response rate of 33.5%. We examined prevalence of preferred method nonuse, reasons for nonuse, and satisfaction with current method among current contraception users (n = 1390). We evaluated associations between demographic and healthcare factors and preferred method nonuse. RESULTS: About 25% of women reported not using their pre

Low-Income Texas Women's Experiences Accessing Their Desired Contraceptive Method at the First Postpartum Visit.

CONTEXT: Early access to contraception may increase postpartum contraceptive use. However, little is known about women's experiences receiving their desired method at the first postpartum visit or how access is associated with use. METHODS: In a 2014-2016 prospective cohort study of low-income Texas women, data were collected from 685 individuals who desired a reversible contraceptive and discussed contraception with a provider at their first postpartum visit, usually within six weeks of birth. Women's experiences were captured using open- and closed-ended survey questions. Thematic and multi

Expanding adolescent access to hormonal contraception: an update on over-the-counter, pharmacist prescribing, and web-based telehealth approaches.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hormonal contraceptives are largely responsible for recent declines in unintended adolescent pregnancies, with oral contraceptives being the most commonly used. Young people face multiple barriers to accessing effective contraception in clinical settings. This article reviews innovations in contraceptive access. RECENT FINDINGS: The three biggest innovations are over-the-counter oral contraceptives (OTC-OCs), pharmacist-prescribing, and web-based telehealth platforms. In many countries, oral contraceptives are available OTC, and FDA trials for OTC-OCs are underway in the Un

Fulfillment of Desired Postpartum Permanent Contraception: a Health Disparities Issue.

Women of color experience marked disparities in fulfillment of desired postpartum permanent contraception. While many attribute the disparity to the required Medicaid sterilization consent form and 30-day waiting period established in response to forced and coerced sterilizations, the policy does not entirely explain the disparity; racial and ethnic disparities persist even within strata of insurance type. We therefore propose framing postpartum permanent contraception as a health disparities issue that requires multi-level interventions to address. Based on the literature, we identify discret

The Association of Public Insurance with Postpartum Contraception Preference and Provision.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have noted that public insurance status is associated with increased uptake of postpartum contraception whereas others have pointed to public insurance as a barrier to accessing highly effective forms of contraception. OBJECTIVE: To assess differences in planned method and provision of postpartum contraception according to insurance type. STUDY DESIGN: This is a secondary analysis of a retrospective cohort study examining postpartum women delivered at a single hospital in Cleveland, Ohio from 2012-2014. Contraceptive methods were analyzed according to Tier-based eff

[Contraception for women after 40: CNGOF Contraception Guidelines].

INTRODUCTION: Choosing contraception for women over 40 can be sometimes difficult but it is crucial since fertility and pregnancy's risks still exist. It requires a thorough evaluation of the situation, in order to identify any vascular and metabolic risk factors, along with the uterine and mammary benign pathologies already diagnosed. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to elaborate some guidelines for clinical practice regarding contraception's prescription for women over 40. METHODS: A systematic review of the French and English existing literature was conducted. Pubmed and the Co

Abortion and contraception for incarcerated people: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Women experiencing incarceration have higher rates of unmet contraceptive needs and rates of abortion than the public. Incarceration presents multiple potential barriers to accessing abortion and contraception care, including prison security protocols, prison locations, lack of access to care providers, stigma, and low health literacy. The objective of this scoping review is to understand the extent and type of evidence in relation to contraception and abortion access for people experiencing criminalization and incarceration. METHODS: We used the Joanna Briggs Institute methodolog

Contraceptive services for adolescents in Latin America: facts, problems and perspectives.

This review presents facts about sexual and contraceptive behavior of Latin American adolescents, analyzes barriers to contraception, and summarizes present perspectives. Between 13 and 30% of Latin American adolescent women live in union before their 20th birthday and between 46 and 63% have had sexual relations. The prevalence of contraceptive use among adolescents at risk of pregnancy remains very low. The pill is the best known contraceptive method. When sexual activity becomes a permanent practice, contraceptive use increases but remains low. Barriers to contraception can be identified as

Contraceptive exposure associates with urinary tract infection risk in a cohort of reproductive-age women: a case control study.

PURPOSE: Although non-barrier contraception is commonly prescribed, the risk of urinary tract infections (UTI) with contraceptive exposure is unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using data from Vanderbilt University Medical Centre's deidentified electronic health record (EHR), women ages 18-52 were randomly sampled and matched based on age and length of EHR. This case-control analysis tested for association between contraception exposure and outcome using UTI-positive (UTI+) as cases and upper respiratory infection+ (URI+) as controls. RESULTS: 24,563 UTI + cases (mean EHR: 64.2 months; mean age

Low-income women and use of prescribed contraceptives in the context of full health insurance coverage in France, 2019.

OBJECTIVE: Major socioeconomic differences in contraceptive use are observed in high-income countries. Cost is often cited as a main factor to explain these differences but other barriers may also exist. Our aim was to compare prescribed contraceptive use among low-income and non-low-income women in a national context of full health insurance coverage. STUDY DESIGN: In the French national health insurance database, we selected all women (14.8 million) aged 15-49 years living in France in 2019. We compared the prevalence of use of each prescribed contraceptive between low-income and non-low-in
