The effectiveness of oxytocin for treating substance use disorders:A systematic review of randomized placebo-controlled trials.

Oxytocin is gaining traction in the treatment of various substance use disorders (SUD). We performed a systematic review assessing the efficacy of oxytocin for treating different SUD. The electronic databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched for randomized controlled trials examining the effects of oxytocin vs. placebo in SUD samples. Quality assessment was conducted using a Cochrane validated checklist. A total of 17 trials with unique samples were identified. These were conducted on participants with SUD involving alcohol (n = 5), opioid

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Risk of Myocardial Infarction and Stroke: A Nested Case-Control Study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread and persistent pollutants that have been associated with elevated cholesterol levels. However, data on incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) is lacking. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association of exposure to PFAS with risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and, subsidiary, with baseline blood lipids. METHODS: This population-based nested case-control study included first incident myocardial infarction and stroke cases with matched controls from two Swedish cohorts: the Swedish Mammography Cohort-Clinical (SMC-C) and

Substance of choice, impact of heroin or opium on treatment retention in a multicentre randomised controlled trial in Iran.

INTRODUCTION: In the Middle East and Asia, illicit opioid use exists across a spectrum between heroin and opium. The impact of primary opioid of choice on opioid agonist treatment retention has not been well evaluated previously, especially for opium tincture, an increasingly popular form of opioid agonist treatment in Iran. This study investigates the relationship between primary opioid of choice, namely heroin or opium, and retention in opium tincture and methadone treatment. METHODS: Participants with opioid use disorder (n = 204) were randomised to receive opium tincture or methadone. All

Impact of yoga and physical exercise on psychological wellbeing among substance abusers: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Substance use disorder is a pattern of recurrent use of illicit substances that leads to severe psychosocial imbalance and recurrent relapse. The study was to evaluate the efficacy of a yoga-based intervention as an add-on in enhancing psychological wellbeing, compared with physical exercise among substance abusers. METHODS: In this randomized controlled study, 96 male participants with substance use disorder from a residential rehabilitation treatment center, Kathmandu, Nepal, were randomly allocated into two groups namely the yoga group (n=48, mean age ± SD=25.18 ± 6.43) and the

The Role of Controlled Substance Use in Diversion Outcomes Among Mentally Ill Offenders: A Pilot Study.

Diversion programs offer opportunities to offenders with substance abuse or mental illness to attend treatment as an alternative to incarceration. The present study identified variables associated with drug relapse and recidivism and the moderating role of substance use on recidivism in a diversion sample. Data were collected from 80 clients with psychotic disorders from a diversion program in New York City. Outcomes were examined after 6 and 12 months of program participation. Individuals who used controlled substances other than alcohol or cannabis were more likely to have a positive toxicol

Low self-control and co-occurrence of gambling with substance use and delinquency among Chinese adolescents.

Relatively little is known about gambling co-morbidity in Asian youth populations. The role of trait self-control in co-morbidity also remains under-explored in the gambling literature. This study examined the association between gambling, substance use and delinquency among Chinese adolescents, and the extent to which these forms of risk behavior are commonly predicted by low self-control. Data from a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of a stratified, random sample of 4,734 high school students aged 12-23 years in Hong Kong were analyzed. The prevalence of gambling pathology, frequency and

Controlled-release oxycodone admissions in public and private substance abuse treatment: associations with organizational characteristics.

Although non-medical use of controlled-release (CR) oxycodone is increasing, little is known about the substance abuse treatment facilities serving individuals dependent on this medication. This study examines the associations between the characteristics of treatment organizations and two dependent variables: any CR-oxycodone admissions and the number of CR-oxycodone admissions in the past six months. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with administrators of 363 publicly funded and 401 privately funded treatment centers in the US. Publicly funded non-profit organizations were less likely t

Patient-control association study of substance P-related genes in unipolar and bipolar affective disorders.

In the search of genes potentially implicated in the aetiology of affective disorders (AD), SUBSTANCE P (SP) pathway is receiving increased interest. SP receptor antagonists, such as MK-869 and L-759274, have been shown to have antidepressant effect. Results from preclinical and human studies implicate SP and its pathway in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. We investigated a possible association between 20 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPS) among four SP-related genes and unipolar and bipolar ad (UPAD and BPAD) in a first sample of 92 UPAD patients and 92 control individuals and in a

Are personality traits familial risk factors for substance use disorders? Results of a controlled family study.

OBJECTIVE: The well-documented association between maladaptive personality traits and substance use disorders has given rise to diverse explanatory models. In this investigation the authors examined one such explanation, that certain personality traits are familial risk factors for the development of substance abuse or dependence. METHOD: Data were collected from a controlled family study using direct diagnostic interviews. The Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire was used to assess the personality traits of 325 probands, 205 of whom had diagnoses of substance abuse or dependence, and 2

Acupuncture for substance use disorders: a protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are common and highly disabling, causing serious long-term harm to people's health. Despite the existence of evidence-based interventions for treating SUDs, many individuals remain symptomatic regardless of treatment, and relapse is common. Acupuncture has been examined for the treatment of SUDs, but available evidence is mixed. This comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis aims to provide updated evidence which will include both English and Chinese studies to investigate the effectiveness and safety of different types of acupuncture for th

The role of prescribed controlled substance acquisition as potential triggers of opioid overdose: A case-crossover study.

BACKGROUND: The role of prescribed opioids and benzodiazepines as risk factors for opioid overdose are well established, however, their role as potential 'triggers' of opioid overdose has not been formally investigated. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the temporal relationship between controlled substance acquisition and opioid overdose utilizing a case-crossover design. METHODS: This study utilized Arkansas statewide data between 2014 and 2020. Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) data were used to assess controlled substance acquisition and fatal and non-fatal

Integrated Motivational Strategies for Intimate Partner Violence Perpetrators with Substance Use: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objective: Intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators with alcohol and/or other drug use problems (ADUPs) have been identified as one of the main high-risk and highly resistant groups of perpetrators requiring special attention in intervention programs for IPV perpetrators. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to evaluate whether an individualized motivational plan adjusted to ADUPs (IMP-ADUPs) was superior to standard motivational strategies (IMP) in reducing ADUPs, and IPV and increasing treatment adherence in IPV perpetrators. Method: Data from a full sample of IPV perpetrators (n

Context of substance initiation among urban Native Americans: an exploratory retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Addiction is a significant problem among many Native American groups but has rarely been examined in urban populations. In particular, little is known about the context in which urban Native Americans first use substances. This study compares cases (people with a history of addiction) to controls (people without a history of addiction) on demographics, substance use history, context of first substance use, and polysubstance use. In addition, this appears to be the first study to overcome the lack of Native American professionals by employing and training lay community members to id

Drugs involved in Kentucky drug poisoning deaths and relation with antecedent controlled substance prescription dispensing.

BACKGROUND: The shift from prescription to illicit drugs involved in drug poisoning deaths raises questions about the current utility of prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) data to inform drug poisoning (overdose) prevention efforts. In this study, we describe relations between specific drugs involved in Kentucky drug poisoning deaths and antecedent controlled substance (CS) dispensing. METHODS: The study used linked death certificates and PDMP data for 2,248 Kentucky resident drug poisoning deaths in 2021. Death certificate literal text analysis identified drugs mentioned with involv
