Minor blood group incompatibility due to blood groups other than Rh(D), although an uncommon cause of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, has the potential to cause severe hyperbilirubinemia and its sequelae in infants, if left undiagnosed and untreated. Here, we describe clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of three cases of minor blood group incompatibility due to anti-E and anti-c antibody. All three neonates presented with pallor, icterus and splenomegaly within the first three days of life. Investigations showed indirect hyperbilirubinemia and a positive direct coombs test. Indirect co

Whether the dot immunoassay is suitable for the detection of Brucella antibodies in human sera by using a colloidal silver-labeled Brucella specific antigen as a diagnostic tool is assessed. The antigen was the B. abortus 19BA protein polysaccharide complex isolated by Brucella acetic acid hydrolysis. The dot immunoassay is easy-to-use, cost-effective, highly sensitive, and therefore of more informative value in detecting Brucella antigens than routine serological tests (Huddleson test, Wright agglutination test, passive hemagglutination test, long-term complement fixation test, and Coombs tes

We describe a patient with abdominal pain and ascites, mesenteric lymphadenitis and peritoneal panniculitis. Initially her ANA was negative. The abdominal pain recurred again three years later and in between the two episodes she had had skin rash, alopecia, arthralgia, and positive Coombs' test-haemolytic anaemia. Her ANA became positive a few years after the initial episode.

This experiment tested a self-contained blood grouping device under microgravity as well as the possibility that gravity could affect the blood grouping reaction. The experiment tested Rh, ABO, and Coombs-sensitized human erythrocytes against their appropriate antisera and diluents. A self-contained device was built which accomplished the agglutination and collected the agglutinates on filter paper. This was flown on the Columbia Space Shuttle on Jan. 12, 1986. The device produced blood agglutinates to several blood groups and the agglutinates were held on filter paper until returned to us by

The classical division of the immune reactions into an immediate humoral type and a cellular late type is left in favour of a classification in 4 forms of reaction according to Gell and Coombs. This classification allows of a by far more reasonable coordination of the diagnostic measures as well as aimed therapeutic conclusions. In detail are differed: type I as anaphylaxis and reagin type (mediator-substance-type), example-anaphylactic shock and asthma; type II as cytotoxic type (cytotoxic antibodies), example-Coombs-positive haemolytic anaemia; type III as immune complex type, examples-serum

Upshaw-Schulman syndrome (USS) is caused by a congenital deficit in ADAMTS13 activity owing to genetic mutations. USS is characterized by severe neonatal jaundice with a negative Coombs test and repeated childhood episodes of thrombocytopenia reversible by fresh frozen plasma (FFP) infusions. We present two patients with USS, both of whom underwent exchange blood transfusions as newborns, although the disease subsequently developed along different clinical courses. USS-CC5 initially received a diagnosis of neonatal jaundice due to fetomaternal ABO incompatibility with an indirect positive Coom

In a multicentre study anticardiolipin antibodies of the IgG and IgM isotypes were measured by a solid phase enzyme immunoassay in 368 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who were not selected on the basis of features of antiphospholipid syndrome. Clinical and laboratory associations of increased levels of anticardiolipin antibodies were evaluated. IgG and IgM antibodies to cardiolipin were documented in 224 (60.9%) and 128 (34.8%) patients, respectively. Regarding the symptoms of antiphospholipid syndrome, elevated amounts of anticardiolipin IgG were significantly associated with

On 90 samples of amniotic fluid coming from 54 cases of Rh-isoimmunization submitted to amniocentesis one or more times, the following tests were done: 1.) Coombs indirect test; 2) immunoelectrophoresis; 3) quantitative determination of immunoglobulins. The results were related to the degree of immunization as determined by Coombs indirect test on the mothers' serum and spectrophotometric curve of the amniotic fluid. For reasons of comparison, quantitative determination of immunoglobulins were performed on samples of amniotic fluid from 39 pregnant non-immunized patients. It was found that the

Out of 177 Rh(D)-negative patients studied, 96 were successfully followed-up after spontaneous or therapeutic abortion. Rh antibodies were detected by the indirect Coombs test in two patients and by an enzyme technique only in a further seven, an overall incidence of 9.4%.The prophylactic use of anti-D immunoglobulin is now recommended for Rh-negative non-immunized patients undergoing abortion, but the dose could be less than 75 mug. The Kleihauer test was of no value in predicting the risk of isoimmunization.

Brucellosis is considered a known widespread zoonotic disease and is endemic in Mediterranean region, like Iran. This study reviewed the clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and therapeutic regimen in childhood brucellosis in Iran. In this retrospective study, we reviewed hospital-records of 34 consecutive children with a confirmed diagnosis of brucellosis among a total number of 10,864 patients admitted to Children's Medical Center, Tehran, Iran, between 2002 and 2010. Among the patients diagnosed with brucellosis, 22 (65%) were admitted during spring and summer. Clinical findings of

OBJECTIVES: The authors aim to assess the use of investigations for patients with acute hemolytic anemia due to glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and to ensure guidelines application during practice to reduce the misuse of hospital resources in the emergency department (ED).
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at a pediatric tertiary hospital on children presenting to the ED with an acute hemolytic crisis due to G6PD deficiency. Initial investigations were collected from patients' records and compared to local hematology unit guidelines. After a period of basic tr

We reported a case of a woman with no past medical illness who presented with a few days' history of fever, myalgia, arthralgia, hypochromic microcytic anaemia and thrombocytopaenia and who was nonstructural protein 1 antigen (NS1Ag)-positive. Haemolytic anaemia including full blood picture work-up revealed high reticulocyte count and haemolysis with positive direct Coombs test. She was started on prednisolone and was discharged well.

The incidence and severity (peak serum bilirubin concentration) of clinically detectable jaundice was determined retrospectively in 110 elution positive cases of ABO incompatibility. Neither the incidence nor the severity of jaundice in the study group differed significantly from a control group. In the individual case Coombs positivity and/or a strongly positive elution test may be a helpful predictor of jaundice occurring but not of its severity.

Repeated transfusions for the treatment of thalassaemia major cause an insult to the patient's immune system and provoke post-transfusion purpura and haemolytic reactions that can be severe and life threatening. This study aims to investigate the presence of erythrocyte autoantibodies and CD59 expression on the surface of red blood cells (RBCs) in patients with beta-thalassaemia major, and any relationship to frequency of blood transfusion. The study looks at a total of 49 patients (both children and adults) with beta-thalassaemia major, divided into four groups according to the number of bloo

Background: Celiac disease is an immune-mediated enteropathy due to permanent sensitivity to gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. Evans syndrome is an autoimmune disorder designated with simultaneous or successive development of autoimmune hemolytic anemia and immune thrombocytopenia and/or immune neutropenia in the absence of any cause. Case Report: We report a rare case of Celiac disease and Evans syndrome in a 20-year-old female who presented to us with generalized weakness and shortness of breath. Her examination finding included anemia, jaundice, and raised jugular venous pulse.

Epicutaneous tests do not permit resolution of all the problems set by drug allergy, but they are an important asset. Their value is sure when the pathology does not correspond precisely with a Gell and Coombes hypersensitisation classification, and especially when there is an interaction between several mechanisms. This presentation of five cases shows the value of these tests.

In this study we aimed to identify a set of prognostic factors for angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) and establish a novel prognostic model. The clinical data of 64 AITL patients enrolled to the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University (from 2012 Jan to 2017 May) were retrospectively analyzed. The estimated 5-year overall survival and progression-free survival of this cohort of patients were 45.8% and 30.8%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that age > 60 years, performance status ≥2, Ann Arbor stage III/IV, lactate dehydrogenase > 250 U/L, serum albumin (ALB) < 30 g/l, Coomb

Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder with clinical and laboratory features of vascular thrombosis, pregnancy loss, and persistent antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs). The pathophysiology is thought to involve the activation of endothelial cells, monocytes, platelets, and complement by aPLs. Disease can range from asymptomatic to rapidly fatal catastrophic APS. We present a case of a 34-year-old male referred for pancytopenia and splenomegaly. On examination, he had decreased sensation and 4/5 power in the left upper extremity. A lacy, purplish rash was noted on the trunk an
