Cordycepin is an important nucleoside analogue and the principal active compound found in Cordyceps militaris. It exhibits anticancer, antiviral, immunomodulatory, and various other biological activities. However, the low cordycepin yields and high manufacturing costs limit its large-scale application. To develop a low-cost nutrient regulator to improve cordycepin production, we investigated the effect of corn steep liquor protein hydrolysate (CSLPH) on cordycepin biosynthesis during submerged fermentation of C. militaris, and the response mechanism of C. militaris to CSLPH utilization was rev

Cultured Cordyceps sinensis (CCS) improves sperm quality in patients with oligoasthenozoospermia (OAS), but its mechanisms remain unclear. A cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced OAS mice model was employed to evaluate the effects of CCS on hormone secretion, blood-testis barrier (BTB) integrity, testicular oxidative stress, and spermatogenic cell apoptosis. The steroidogenic factor-1 (SF-1)-mediated steroid hormone biosynthesis was further examined. Our results demonstrated that CCS elevated serum hormone levels, increased BTB-related protein expression, and inhibited spermatogenic cell apoptosis. F

Pharmacogenomic analysis based on drug transcriptome characteristics is widely used to identify mechanisms of action. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the molecular mechanism of protective effect against adriamycin (ADM)-induced mpc5 cell injury of Chinese cordyceps aqueous extracts (WCCs) by a systematic transcriptomic analysis. The phytochemicals of WCCs were analyzed via the "phenol-sulfuric acid method", high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and HPLC-mass spectrometry (MS). We analyzed the drug-reaction transcriptome profiles of mpc5 cell after treating them with WCCs. R

There is currently much interest in finding new phytochemicals among plants and fungi as nature-based alternatives to replace problematic herbicides such as glyphosate, which are preferentially used in agricultural production n. We discovered striking herbicidal potency in Cordyceps militaris (L.) and identified cordycepin as its principal plant growth inhibitor. Cordycepin obtained as an ethyl acetate extract was subjected to column chromatography and evaluated for its bioassay-guided phytotoxic capacity against Raphanus sativus (radish), showing a maximum inhibition on germination and growth

BACKGROUND: Ascomycete Cordyceps species have been using as valued traditional Chinese medicines. Particularly, the fruiting bodies of Cordyceps cicadae (syn. Isaria cicadae) have long been utilized for the treatment of chronic kidney disease. However, the genetics and bioactive chemicals in this fungus have been largely unexplored.
RESULTS: In this study, we performed comprehensive omics analyses of C. cicadae, and found that, in contrast to other Cordyceps fungi, C. cicadae produces asexual fruiting bodies with the production of conidial spores instead of the meiotic ascospores. Genome sequ

Increasing exposure to blue light has raised concern about retinal injury, particularly in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine (A2E), a photosensitive fluorophore associated with age-related macular degeneration, is an important mediator of this process. In this study, feature-based molecular networking guided the identification of cordylutenes A-J (1-10), a new molecular family of blue light-protective fungal pigments from Cordyceps militaris. These metabolites possess a previously unreported symmetric all-E C20 polyene dicarbonyl skeleton with caroten

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for the highest cancer-related mortality worldwide. Chemotherapy, the backbone of treatment for advanced disease, is constrained by drug resistance and off-target toxicity. Extracts of Cordyceps sinensis (CORS), a medicinal fungus, contain cordycepin, cordyceps polysaccharides (CSP), and various sterols that suppress NSCLC cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in preclinical models. Translating these findings to the clinic, however, faces three problems. First, the active compounds are poorly absorbed orally. Second, water-based decoction inevitabl

Cordycepin, known for its tumor-suppressive and antiviral properties, has garnered attention due to its therapeutic and biological potential. Current Cordyceps militaris - based cordycepin production methods involve time-consuming and cost-intensive solid-state fermentation. Using an internet of things (IoT) architecture, we developed an active air-feed regulation fermentation system (AAFRFS) to detect CO2 emitted during C. militaris submerged fermentation. Equipped with a microcontroller unit and proportional-integral-derivative plus pulse-width modulation technology, the AAFRFS also regulate

Cultivated Chinese cordyceps, an optimal substitute for the endangered wild resource, has recently been produced on a large scale. This work sought to explore the structural features and immunomodulatory activity of a novel low-molecular-weight polysaccharide (CSP1a, 15.7 kDa) isolated from cultivated Chinese cordyceps. CSP1a was prepared with a multi-step process that encompassed hot water extraction, alcohol precipitation, and column chromatographic purification. The monosaccharide composition, infrared spectroscopy, methylation, and nuclear magnetic resonance results revealed that CSP1a was

BACKGROUND: T cell infiltration and differentiation play a central part in the development of lupus nephritis (LN). Our prior research has indicated that protein, the primary active component of cordyceps (WCP), a traditional Chinese medicine, possesses properties that can enhance renal fibrosis and provide kidney protection. Nonetheless, the connection between WCP and T cell infiltration and differentiation in LN remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research was to assess the immunomodulatory impacts of WCP in LN mice and elucidate the underlying mechanism through in v

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in immunosuppressive therapies, lupus nephritis (LN) continues to be a major contributor to morbidity and mortality. The scarcity of reliable biomarkers for predicting renal outcomes further complicates clinical management. While Cordyceps is recognized for its immunomodulatory properties as a medicinal fungus, its therapeutic potential in LN remains underexplored. Moreover, it is unclear whether its molecular targets identified through screening constitute viable therapeutic interventions for this disease.
METHODS: Network pharmacology was integrated with LN-asso

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of the abnormality of the immune system is still not clear at present. Chemosynthetic drugs, human or animal immune products and microbiological drugs are used as the main drugs in clinics currently, but these drugs have different side effects. So researchers turned to safer natural products in order to find immunomodulatory active substances from natural products and their extracts.
METHODS: Immunosuppressed mice were induced by cyclophosphamide and administered with Cordyceps militaris polypeptide (CMP) for the study on the effect of CMP on the immune function o
