Theoretical analysis of wavefront aberration from treatment decentration with oblique incidence after conventional laser refractive surgery.

Analysis of induced wavefront aberration after refractive surgery is important in the design of vision correction and the development of visual correction technology. Based on a mathematical model of the anterior corneal surface, the influence of treatment decentration on induced wavefront aberrations was studied by considering oblique incidence. The results revealed that significant coma was induced from the treatment translation, and it was nearly proportional to the translation or corrected refraction of vision correction. The induced aberrations from the lateral translation correlated with

Detection of subclinical keratoconus by using corneal anterior and posterior surface aberrations and thickness spatial profiles.

PURPOSE. To assess the suitability of corneal anterior and posterior surface aberrations and thickness profile data for discrimination between eyes with early keratoconus (KC), fellow eyes of eyes with early KC, and normal eyes. METHODS. Thirty-two eyes (group 1) of 25 patients were newly diagnosed with KC; 17 eyes of 17 patients (group 2) were asymptomatic fellow eyes without clinical signs of KC. One hundred twenty-three healthy eyes of 69 patients were negative control eyes (group 3). Zernike coefficients from anterior and posterior surfaces, data from corneal thickness spatial profiles, an

Wavefront-optimized versus wavefront-guided LASIK for myopic astigmatism with the ALLEGRETTO WAVE: three-month results of a prospective FDA trial.

PURPOSE: To compare visual outcomes using the WaveLight ALLEGRETTO WAVE to administer either wavefront-optimized (standard LASIK) or wavefront-guided (custom LASIK) treatments in myopic eyes. METHODS: In this prospective, open-label, multicenter study conducted in the United States, 374 eyes were randomized by alternating enrollment to receive either wavefront-optimized or wavefront-guided LASIK treatments with this laser platform. Bilateral treatments were administered, with both eyes of each patient receiving the same treatment. Corneal flaps were created using the IntraLase femtosecond las

DESIGN: Noncomparative, interventional case series. METHODS: Twenty-eight eyes of 20 patients with significant night vision symptoms and positive corneal SA (Z(4)(0)) higher than 0.5 microm after myopic laser refractive surgery were included in the study at Vissum-Instituto Oftalmologico de Alicante, Spain. Age-related optical changes: stability of coma and increased spherical aberrations in the cornea and whole eye.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces and the entire eye vary with age. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, cross-sectional study. METHODS: One hundred eyes from 100 participants, with 20 eyes per decade group (20s to 60s+), were assessed. Participants had no ocular diseases except refractive errors and mild cataracts, and no abnormalities on the anterior corneal surface, as assessed by Placido-based corneal topography. Corneal and ocular wavefront aberrations were measured with an integrated Scheimpflug tomographer/Hartmann-S

[Possibilities of compensation of optical aberrations in keratoconus with rigid gas-permeable contact lenses].

The paper gives the results of a study of ocular optical aberrations in keratoconus. Objective aberrometry was carried out with OPD Scan (Nidek, Japan). An additional computer program (OPD station) was used to evaluate the corneal wavefront. Examinations were made before and after application of a rigid gas-permeable lens (RGPL) to the eye. For the functional evaluation of the effectiveness of contact correction, the investigators used visometry and determined binocular visual functions, contrast sensitivity, and visual productivity. A total of 87 subjects (174 eyes) with keratoconus were exam

Aberrometry: basic science and clinical applications.

This paper addresses the concept, measurement and applications of wave aberrations. The ocular optics is not perfect. Apart from conventional low order aberrations (such as defocus and astigmatism) retinal images are degraded by other high order aberrations. Aberrometers typically measure ray deviations at the retinal plane, as a function of pupil position, i.e. local derivatives of the wave aberration. The paper discusses state of the art technology to measure the aberrations of the eye (cornea and crystalline lens), both monochromatic and polychromatic. The aberrometers described include the

Effect of incision types for Artisan phakic intraocular lens implantation on ocular higher order aberrations.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of incision types for Artisan phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) implantation on ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs). METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of the patients who had undergone Artisan PIOL implantation for the correction of myopia and followed up for at least 6mo. Patients are classified into 2 groups considering the incision type: cornea group with patients undergone clear corneal incision; sclera group with patients undergone sclera tunnel incision. All patients with postoperative astigmatism of under 1 diopter (D) were included to minimize t

Method for expressing clinical and statistical significance of ocular and corneal wave front error aberrations.

PURPOSE: The significance of ocular or corneal aberrations may be subject to misinterpretation whenever eyes with different pupil sizes or the application of different Zernike expansion orders are compared. A method is shown that uses simple mathematical interpolation techniques based on normal data to rapidly determine the clinical significance of aberrations, without concern for pupil and expansion order. METHODS: Corneal topography maps (TOMEY, Inc, Nagoya, Japan) from 30 normal corneas were collected, and the corneal wave front error was analyzed by Zernike polynomial decomposition into s

[New diagnostic methods for imaging the anterior segment of the eye to enable treatment modalities selection].

New diagnostic instruments for imaging the anterior segment of the eye have been developed using the corneal topographer, wavefront sensor, and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT). Data obtained from these instruments can be used to choose treatment modalities by providing information that is complementary to slit-lamp examination and visual acuity measurements. Zernike vector analysis was used to evaluate the corneal higher-order aberrations to quantify the effects of the corneal shape on the optical quality of the eye. The analyses showed the optical characteristics of the an

Ocular higher-order wavefront aberrations in the Japanese adult population: the Yamagata Study (Funagata).

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between age and ocular higher-order wavefront aberrations (HOAs) in an adult Japanese population, in addition to factors associated with HOA variations. METHODS: In the Yamagata Study (Funagata) cohort, 227 adult Japanese participants (aged 37-86 years) underwent systemic and ophthalmologic examinations in 2012. Ocular, corneal, and internal HOAs were measured in micrometers. From the Zernike coefficients, we calculated the root mean square of the total HOA, coma, and spherical aberration for a pupil diameter of 4 mm. Linear regression analyses were us

[Aberrometry in the diagnosis and treatment of keratoconus].

Keratoconus (KC) is a bilateral progressive disease that often begins in young adulthood. Advanced KC significantly impairs patients' quality of life, making early detection of the condition a critical goal for specialists. Early identification of KC greatly influences both the treatment strategy and the outcomes. This review focuses on the ocular wavefront in KC, which is of interest from the perspective of early diagnosis. The article outlines the nature of optical aberrations in the eye, particularly in KC, and the principles of wavefront aberration analysis. An increase in higher-order abe

Transient increase of higher-order aberrations after lateral rectus recession in children.

The changes of higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after bilateral lateral rectus muscle recession were evaluated. Forty eyes of 20 children were enrolled and their wavefront information was assessed until postoperative 3 months. Even though the root mean square (RMS) of total aberration was not changed, the RMS of HOA was transiently increased at postoperative 1 week and returned to baseline level after 1 month. Among individual Zernike coefficient, secondary astigmatism, quadrafoil, secondary coma, secondary trefoil, and pentafoil showed similar tendency with the RMS of HOA. However, coma, trefo
