Morphological Assessment of Stage HH38 of the Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica) Heart by Micro-Sonogram.

A challenge of studying mammalian cardiac embryogenesis is the limited ability to perform experimental manipulations in animal models. The avian embryo is widely accepted as a model for mammalian heart developmental studies. In this study, we establish the methodology and protocols for studying the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) heart at embryonic day 10 (HH38) using the FUJIFILM VisualSonics Vevo 3100 ultrasound system equipped with a MX550D small animal cardiology transducer. These protocols were designed to measure right ventricular wall thickness, pulmonary artery diameter, and the out

Photoperiodic Modulation in Immune and Reproductive Systems in Japanese Quails (Coturnix japonica): A Morphometric Perspective.

The present study was designed to elucidate a relationship between lymphoid organs and reproductive activity in male Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) bred in a temperate region of Pakistan (30.3753° N, 69.3451° E) in response to photoperiodic changes. The research focused primarily on the relative morphological changes in primary (thymus and bursa of Fabricius) and secondary (spleen) lymphoid organs with respect to seasonal variations in the histomorphometry of testicular tissue. For this purpose, a comparable number of clinically healthy Japanese quails were exsanguinated during active (Ap

Effects of Deltamethrin and Endosulfan on the Hepatic Markers and Neurobehavioural Alterations in Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica).

BACKGROUND: Deltamethrin (DLM), a synthetic pyrethroid, and endosulfan, an organochlorine pesticide, frequently co-occur in agricultural environments, yet their combined effects on hepatic function and behaviour in non-target avian species remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the toxic effects of combined DLM and endosulfan exposure on hepatic markers, lipid profile and neurobehaviour in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). METHODS: Twelve adult quails were divided into three groups receiving: (1) control, (2) low-dose (0.1 mg/kg DLM + 0.15 mg/kg endosulfan) or (3) high-d

Tectum opticum development in embryonic quail (Coturnix japonica) and the role of HSP70 in the developmental process.

INTRODUCTION: The tectum opticum, which is a section of the mesencephalon, is located between the cerebellum and the ventral hemispherium of birds. In birds, the tectum opticum has a well-developed, thick, layered structure. It is quite large compared to those of other vertebrates and is considered the primary pathway of visual information to the telencephalon. Heat-shock proteins (HSPs) are molecules that help fold newly synthesised polypeptides, assemble multiprotein complexes and transport proteins across cellular membranes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, 50 fertilised quail eggs wer

Inhibition of the Nrf2 signaling pathway involved in imidacloprid-induced liver fibrosis in Coturnix japonica.

Imidacloprid (IMI) is a kind of widely used neonicotinoid insecticide. However, the toxicity of IMI is not only applied to target pests but also causes serious negative effects on birds and other creatures. Our previous studies have shown that long-term exposure to IMI can induce liver fibrosis in quails. However, the specific mechanism of quail liver fibrosis induced by IMI is not completely clear. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to further clarify the potential molecular mechanism of IMI-induced liver fibrosis in quails. Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) were treated with/without

The effect of cryopreservation process on morphology and fertilising ability of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) spermatozoa.

Changes in the morphology and fertilising ability of Japanese quail spermatozoa were studied after semen dilution, equilibration and freezing-thawing process in order to determine the optimal diluent, cryoprotectant and the freezing-thawing method. Subsequent stages of quail semen cryopreservation caused significant decline in spermatozoa morphology and their ability to fertilise the ovum. Semen dilution with Lake's extender alone reduced the number of morphologically normal spermatozoa and decreased their fertilising ability. Dimethylacetamide (DMA) was the least detrimental but equilibration

Vitamin A deficiency reduces the responsiveness of pineal gland to light in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Synthesis of melatonin in pineal gland is under the control of light environment. The recent finding of the presence of rhodopsin-like photopigment (pinopsin) and retinal in the avian pinealocytes has led to a hypothesis that vitamin A is involved in photoresponses of the pineal gland. We have thus analyzed the effect of vitamin A deficiency on the regulatory system of melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland of Japanese quail. Depletion of vitamin A from Japanese quails was attained by feeding them with a vitamin A-free diet supplemented with retinoic acid. In the vitamin A-deficient birds, di

Nocturnal plasma levels of melatonin in quails (Coturnix japonica) injected with l-5-hydroxy-tryptophan.

This study aimed to demonstrate the influence of the systemic administration of l-5-hydroxy-tryptophan (L-HTP) on the plasma levels of melatonin during the dark period in quails. Throughout daylight, the plasma levels of melatonin did not differ significantly, oscillating between 110.2 +/- 15.8 pg.mL(-1) and 157.4 +/- 34.8 pg.mL(-1), from 8 to 16 hours. L-HTP (25 mg.kg(-1), through the intracelomic route) administered at 18 hours lessened significantly the nocturnal increase of the plasma levels of melatonin (controls, 327.3 +/- 20.1 and 315.8 +/- 20.9 pg.mL(-1) vs. 242.1 +/- 24.8 and 217.5 +/

Elucidating the central anorexigenic mechanism of glucagon-like peptide 1 in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) elicits a potent reduction in food intake, although the central mechanism mediating this appetite-suppressive effect is not fully understood in all species. To begin to elucidate the molecular mechanisms in quail, we administered GLP-1 via intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection to 7-day-old Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) and determined effects on food and water intake, behavior, and brain nucleus activation. We observed a reduction in food and water intake, with the lowest effective dose being 0.01 nmol. Quail injected with GLP-1 displayed fewer steps, feed

Possible role of calcium on oocyte development after intracytoplasmic sperm injection in quail (Coturnix japonica).

Although a rise in intracellular calcium concentration of vertebrate oocytes plays a pivotal role for the initiation of fertilization or oocyte activation, no study on this subject has been reported in birds. This study was conducted to study the role of intracellular calcium in relation to fertilization in avian oocytes. First, immediately after a quail oocyte was injected with a sperm, it was treated with strontium chloride as an inducer for intracellular calcium rise at doses of 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 mM for 4 hr in the culture medium and was followed by 20-hr culture. Treatment with 5 mM of st

Carryover effects of dietary arginine on productive performance and blood biochemistry in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Early nutritional programming can affect later development in birds, yet the carryover effects of dietary arginine in Japanese quail remain poorly understood. Arginine is an essential amino acid for birds, as they cannot synthesise it endogenously, and it plays a vital role in growth and metabolism. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary arginine restriction or supplementation on body mass change, reproduction, and plasma biochemistry in Japanese quail after the dietary treatment was discontinued for two consecutive weeks. Birds were fed either a low-arginine diet (25% below recomm

Effects of Personality Traits on the Food-Scratching Behaviour and Food Intake of Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica).

Overall foraging success and ultimate fitness of an individual animal is highly dependent on their food-searching strategies, which are the focus of foraging theory. Considering the consistent inter-individual behavioural differences, personality may have a fundamental impact on animal food-scratching behaviour, which remains largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate how personality traits (i.e., boldness and exploration) affect the food-scratching behaviour and food intake of the domestic Japanese quail Coturnix japonica during the foraging process. The quails exhibited signific

Anatomical and histological changes in the oviducts of Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica, after embryonic exposure to ethynyloestradiol.

Oestrogen is needed for normal oviductal development in female birds, but excessive early exposure to oestrogen can cause oviductal abnormalities and impair egg-laying ability. In this study, the anatomical and histological effects of in ovo exposure to the synthetic oestrogen ethynyloestradiol on the oviducts of immature and adult female Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica, were investigated. A series of abnormalities was observed after injection of ethynyloestradiol (2 or 20 ng g(-1) egg) into the yolk on day 3 of incubation. Ethynyloestradiol induced precocious differentiation of the luminal

First report of MDR virulent Pseudomonas aeruginosa in apparently healthy Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) in Bangladesh.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is a major pathogen associated conditions like septicaemia, respiratory disorders, and diarrhoea in poultry, particularly in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). The infection causes huge economical losses due to its high transmissibility, mortality and zoonotic potential. This study aimed to isolate, identify, detect virulence genes, and profile multidrug resistance (MDR) of P. aeruginosa from Japanese quail. Oral and rectal swabs were collected from 110 apparently healthy quail birds across various districts in Bangladesh. Bacterial isolation and identif
