Tobacco, cocaine, and heroin: Craving and use during daily life.

BACKGROUND: Relationships among tobacco smoking, tobacco craving, and other drug use and craving may have treatment implications in polydrug-dependent individuals. METHODS: We conducted the first ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study to investigate how smoking is related to other drug use and craving during daily life. For up to 20 weeks, 106 methadone-maintained outpatients carried PalmPilots (PDAs). They reported their craving, mood, behaviors, environment, and cigarette-smoking status in 2 to 5 random-prompt entries/day and initiated PDA entries when they used cocaine or heroin or ha

Real-time craving and mood assessments before and after smoking.

This study explored some quandaries concerning craving and mood as motivators to smoke. Craving and negative mood have long been associated with day-to-day smoking as two of the primary motivational forces behind the maintenance of the behavior, as well as significant barriers in smokers' attempts to quit. Craving remains a clinically relevant phenomenon, with most smokers describing craving as a troublesome problem when quitting. Smokers' self-reports of negative mood, as an antecedent for smoking, are so robustly reported that many models of nicotine dependence have incorporated a critical r

Cue-provoked craving and nicotine replacement therapy in smoking cessation.

Cue exposure paradigms have been used to examine reactivity to smoking cues. However, it is not known whether cue-provoked craving is associated with smoking cessation outcomes or whether cue reactivity can be attenuated by nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in clinical samples. Cue-provoked craving ratings and reaction time responses were measured on the 1st day of abstinence among 158 smokers who had been randomized to high-dose nicotine (35 mg) or placebo patch. The nicotine patch reduced overall levels of craving but did not attenuate cue-provoked craving increases or reaction time respons

Naltrexone's effect on cue-elicited craving among alcoholics in treatment.

BACKGROUND: Advancing knowledge of biobehavioral effects of interventions can result in improved treatments. Thus, a standardized laboratory cue reactivity assessment has been developed and validated to assess the cognitive and psychophysiological responses to a simulated high-risk situation: alcohol cues. The present study investigates the effects of a pharmacotherapy (naltrexone) on a laboratory-based, cue-elicited urge to drink among abstinent alcoholics in treatment. METHODS: Alcohol-dependent subjects were randomized to 12 weeks of naltrexone or placebo after completing a partial hospita

Serotoninergic drug-induced weight loss in carbohydrate craving obese patients.

RATIONALE: Serotoninergic neurotransmission, mainly in specific hypothalamic nuclei, plays an important role in the regulation of appetite. Dysfunction of this system has been postulated to result in the clinical picture of carbohydrate craving obesity. This subgroup of obese patients is characterized by a specific preference for high-carbohydrate and low-protein snacks. Centrally acting serotoninergic drugs, such as the serotonin re-uptake inhibitor d-fenfluramine, have been hypothesized to restore serotonin mediated control of food intake. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that serotoninerg

Electrophysiological correlates of resisting craving in adults with tobacco use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use disorder (TUD) is the largest premature cause of death in the world. While most adults with TUD have attempted to quit, only less than 10% quit for at least 6 months. Craving is one of the main causes of smoking relapses. Event-related potentials (ERPs) have been extensively studied using cue-provoked paradigms. However, little is known about ERPs related to resisting craving, which seems important to investigate since such activity might represent treatment targets to promote smoking cessation. AIMS: The goal of this work was to investigate the ERP correlates of resis

The moderating role of trait impulsivity on reward sensitivity and alcohol craving.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is associated with an increased risk of negative consequences for young adults due to their disproportionately high rates of alcohol use. Alcohol craving (i.e., the strong desire to consume alcohol) is related to increased use for clinical populations, but scant research has examined craving and its associated factors among young adults. Reward sensitivity (i.e., the desire to obtain appetitive stimuli) and impulsivity (i.e., rash action without considering the consequences) have been independently linked to alcohol craving, but few studies examine how these factors int

The Influence of Perimenstrual Daily Ovarian Hormones on Anxiety and Cigarette Craving.

INTRODUCTION: Estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) and their fluctuation during the female menstrual cycle have been independently linked to both nicotine reinforcement and anxiety. The fluctuation and withdrawal of E2 and P during perimenstrum (days before and during menses) is a vulnerability window for emotional distress, thus the hormonal influence on anxiety and craving may be amplified during perimenstrum. METHOD: Naturalistic daily data were collected from non-treatment-seeking females who endorsed daily cigarette smoking (N = 50). The daily protocol involved morning salivary index of E

Craving in eating disorders: Mapping the concept through a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Craving, long considered a hallmark of addictive disorders, has increasingly been recognized as a clinically significant phenomenon in eating disorders (ED). Yet, its conceptualization, measurement, and role in ED pathology remain inconsistent and fragmented. This review aimed to map existing knowledge through a systematic review. METHODS: Searches were conducted in July 2025 in Embase, PsycInfo, and Web of Science. Eligible records were peer-reviewed studies including adults clinically diagnosed with ED. Fifty studies and fifteen reviews met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Most st

Anodal stimulation of inhibitory control and craving in satiated restrained eaters.

OBJECTIVES: Eating and weight disorders are severe and complex clinical conditions which, among other behaviors, include (attempts at) restrained eating, food avoidance, following dietary rules, and overeating. Comparable to women with obesity, restrained eaters (RE) without formal eating disorder diagnosis are worse at inhibiting their motor responses than unrestrained eaters (URE). According to neuroimaging studies, the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) is involved in inhibitory control which, in turn, could be improved by neuromodulation such as anodal transcranial direct current stimulat

The impact of alcohol priming on craving and motivation to drink: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: An initial dose of alcohol can motivate-or prime-further drinking and may precipitate (re)lapse and bingeing. Lab-based studies have investigated the alcohol priming effect; however, heterogeneity in designs has resulted in some inconsistent findings. The aims of this meta-analysis were to (i) determine the pooled effect size for motivation to drink following priming, measured by alcohol consumption and craving, and (ii) examine whether design characteristics influenced any priming effect. METHODS: Literature searches of PsycINFO, PubMed and Scopus in October 2020 (update

Neurophysiological correlate of incubation of craving in individuals with methamphetamine use disorder.

Previous studies both in laboratory animals and humans have reported that abstinence induces incubation of cue-induced drug craving for nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, and methamphetamine. However, current experimental procedures utilized to study incubation of methamphetamine craving do not incorporate the temporal dynamics of neuropsychological measures and electrophysiological activities associated with this incubation process. This study utilized the high-density electroencephalogram (EEG) signals as a rapid, inexpensive, and noninvasive measure of cue-induced craving potential. A total of 156

The body asks and the mind judges: Food cravings in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Food Craving (FC) is a construct influenced by cognitive, emotional, physiological and external components, severely altered in Eating Disorders (EDs). OBJECTIVES: To investigate how FC was measured in EDs. METHODS: A search was conducted (PubMed, Scopus and PsycINFO databases) for studies that have investigated FC in EDs published in the last thirty years. RESULTS: The studies found (n=37) demonstrated that FC is a predictor of binge eating in individuals with Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder, which are more sensitive to the environment and emotional factors, whereas,

Cue-induced craving to paraphernalia and drug images in opioid dependence.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stimuli that are repeatedly paired with substance use, such as drug paraphernalia, can themselves elicit drug craving. The aim of this study was to examine whether particular cue types elicit greater craving responses than others among individuals with opioid dependence. METHODS: Participants seeking inpatient treatment for opioid dependence were recruited for a study of cue-induced craving. This sample (N = 50), included 25 primary heroin users, 20 primary prescription opioid users, and 5 users of heroin and prescription opioids equally. Participants completed a cu

Development of a Virtual Approach-Avoidance Task to Assess Alcohol Cravings.

The aim of the present study was to develop a new approach-avoidance task in a virtual environment that could be used to assess the response to virtual alcohol-related situations by heavy social drinkers (HSDs) and light social drinkers (LSDs). Thirty-six male undergraduates (18 HSDs, 18 LSDs) responded to signals when they pulled or pushed a joystick after watching scenes of alcohol- or nonalcohol-related situations in a virtual environment. The HSD group spent more time on moving away from alcohol-related situations than nonalcohol-related situations. We found that the HSD group had difficul

The prevalence, intensity, and assessment of craving for MDMA/ecstasy in recreational users.

This study evaluated the prevalence, intensity, and correlates of craving for MDMA/ecstasy among recreational users employing a new multi-item, self-report questionnaire reflecting experiences of desire, intention to use, and anticipated loss of control. Using a web-based data collection procedure, we recruited MDMA/ecstasy users (n = 240) to rate their agreement with eight craving statements immediately before and immediately following 90 seconds of exposure to either ecstasy-related or control stimuli. Participants then completed questionnaires to measure ecstasy refusal self-efficacy, passi

Neurofeedback training for opiate addiction: improvement of mental health and craving.

Psychological improvements in patients with substance use disorders have been reported after neurofeedback treatment. However, neurofeedback has not been commonly accepted as a treatment for substance dependence. This study was carried out to examine the effectiveness of this therapeutic method for opiate dependence disorder. The specific aim was to investigate whether treatment leads to any changes in mental health and substance craving. In this experimental study with a pre-post test design, 20 opiate dependent patients undergoing Methadone or Buprenorphine maintenance treatment were examine

Assessing the impact of cue exposure on craving to gamble in university students.

We recruited a sample of university student gamblers (n = 48) to complete a web-based battery of instruments in a study designed to assess the impact of imagery-based versus photographic cue exposure on acute craving to gamble using the multi-item Gambling Urge Scale (GUS; Raylu and Oei 2004). Although self-reported craving increased following both forms of cue exposure, the imagery script had a more pronounced impact than did examination of photographs of gambling-related stimuli. We also evaluated the association of the post-cue exposure GUS with other relevant measures, and found it correla
