Why? How Perpetrators of Male-Male Homicide Explain the Crime.

This paper identifies the explanatory narratives used by perpetrators of male-male homicide in Buenos Aires (Argentina) to make sense of this crime. Drawing upon narrative criminology and masculinities theories, this study enquires into the rationalisations of perpetrators, considering their emic terms, rationalities and stories. Fieldwork was conducted between 2016 and 2020, and a convenience sample strategy was employed for participant recruitment. The analysis is based upon seventy-three narrative-biographical interviews with offenders, and field observations in prisons and homes of former

Partners in crime: Proteins implicated in RNA repeat expansion diseases.

Short tandem repeats are repetitive nucleotide sequences robustly distributed in the human genome. Their expansion underlies the pathogenesis of multiple neurological disorders, including Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and frontotemporal dementia, fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome, and myotonic dystrophies, known as repeat expansion disorders (REDs). Several molecular pathomechanisms associated with toxic RNA containing expanded repeats (RNAexp ) are shared among REDs and contribute to disease progression, however, detailed mechanistic insight into those process

Let's use those tests! Evaluations of crime-related amnesia claims.

Suspects awaiting trial often claim that they cannot remember important parts of their violent crimes. It is not unusual that forensic experts readily accept such claims and interpret them in terms of dissociative amnesia or, more specifically, a "red-out". This interpretation hinges on the assumption that heightened levels of stress implicated in violent crimes interfere with memory. We argue that the notion of red-out is a priori not plausible and that alternative interpretations-primarily malingering and substance-induced organic amnesia-should be considered and ruled out first before concl

[Crime prevention in high-functioning pervasive developmental disorders with paraphilia].

Paraphilia refers to occasional concomitant disorders of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). When a restricted interest of PDD is focused on a sexual object, paraphilia may be develop as a problematic symptom. However, having this concomitant disorder does not always result in criminal behavior. When the social interactivity of a particular patient with PDD is severely impaired, paraphilia could lead to a sex crime. Because pedophilia targets sacrifice innocent and defenseless children, it is critical to prevent such sex crimes by understanding the psychopathology of PDD with paraphilia, e

Causal Identification in Crime Research: Lessons From Structural Causal Models.

This paper addresses identification challenges in social sciences using observational data through tailored examples from crime and criminal justice research. The paper highlights how structural causal models and directed acyclic graphs make the assumed causal structure explicit and help diagnose potential pitfalls such as collider bias and the use of inadmissible instruments or covariate sets. By distinguishing identification from estimation, the paper emphasizes the importance of specifying a causal model that makes identifying assumptions explicit and supports valid inference under those as

Mental Health and Serious Drug Crime: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Serious drug crime involves a high level of risk and is often characterised as requiring a network of suitable and trustworthy collaborators. Although prior studies have focused on the importance of economic, social and work-related factors for involvement in such crime, there has been less research into the mental health of the people involved. AIMS: To assess the prevalence of mental disorders in a full nationwide cohort of individuals convicted of serious drug crimes in Denmark (2001-2020), who were born after 1984 and had a personal national identification number. METHODS: We

Binge Drinking and Crime: Accounting for Alcohol Availability in Neighborhoods.

Background: The relationship between alcohol availability and crime is relatively well established. On the other hand, alcohol availability in neighborhoods may result in excessive alcohol use that is associated with crime, and we know less about the role that binge drinking has in crime. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines binge drinking as "consuming 5 or more drinks on an occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on an occasion for women." Methods: In this study, we gathered Milwaukee, Wisconsin 2021 data on binge drinking from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a

Rethinking El Salvador's Homicide Problem: Age, Homicide, and Crime Control.

Latin America remains one of the most violent regions in the world, with El Salvador reporting among the highest homicide rates globally. Much of the existing research emphasizes structural inequality, civil conflict, and transnational gangs such as Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) as contributors to this violence. Yet little attention has been paid to whether demographic shifts, particularly youth bulges, also contribute to lethal violence. This study examines whether the age distribution of El Salvador's population helps explain homicide trends between 1995 and 2018. Drawing on the criminological co

Investigating the Crime Scene-Molecular Signatures in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are without cure and troublesome to manage because of the considerable diversity between patients and the lack of reliable biomarkers. Several studies have demonstrated that diet, gut microbiota, genetics and other patient factors are essential for disease occurrence and progression. Understanding the link between these factors is crucial for identifying molecular signatures that identify biomarkers to advance the management of IBD. Recent technological breakthroughs and data integration have fuelled the intensity of this research. This research demonstrates t

α-Synuclein oligomers and fibrils: partners in crime in synucleinopathies.

The misfolding and aggregation of α-synuclein is the general hallmark of a group of devastating neurodegenerative pathologies referred to as synucleinopathies, such as Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. In such conditions, a range of different misfolded aggregates, including oligomers, protofibrils, and fibrils, are present both in neurons and glial cells. Growing experimental evidence supports the proposition that soluble oligomeric assemblies, formed during the early phases of the aggregation process, are the major culprits of neuronal toxicity; at t

Terror and Crime: Anatomy of an Austrian Jihadist Prison Cohort.

Between 2014 and 2018 there was an unprecedented wave of jihadist terrorist activity in Austria that was mostly related to the "Islamic state." Meanwhile, many individuals have been or are gradually being released from prison. While many were able to disengage, two prevented and sentenced foreign fighters planned attacks in Vienna, one of them succeeded. In order to better understand this type of perpetrator, files of a cohort of 56 convicted jihadist terrorist offenders were analyzed. Half of this cohort were foreign fighters or attempted to become foreign fighters, while others contributed f

Ingroup Empathy, Help, and Blame After Anti-LGBT+ Hate Crime.

Crimes motivated by hatred toward a person's sexual orientation or gender identity typically cause greater physical and emotional harm than comparative crimes not motivated by hate. Compounding these impacts, hate crime victims receive less empathy, less support, and are blamed more for their victimization both by society in general and by criminal justice agencies. However, as hate crimes are the epitome of intergroup hostility, the crimes are also likely to engender an ingroup empathy bias in which fellow LGBT+ people provide greater empathy to hate crime victims, potentially motivating grea

Analyzing the Impact of COVID-19 Lockdowns on Violent Crime.

Existing research suggests that COVID-19 lockdowns tend to contribute to a decrease in overall urban crime rates. Most studies have compared pre-lockdown and post-lockdown periods to lockdown periods in Western cities. Few have touched on the fine variations during lockdowns. Equally rare are intracity studies conducted in China. This study tested the relationship between violent crime and COVID-19 lockdown policies in ZG City in southern China. The distance from the isolation location to the nearest violent crime site, called "the nearest crime distance", is a key variable in this study. Kern

Confounding Bias in the Relationship Between Problem Gambling and Crime.

Although the relationship between problem gambling and criminal behavior has been widely researched, concerns over the causal nature of this association remain. Some argue that problem gambling does not lead to crime; instead, the same background characteristics that predict problem gambling also predict criminal behavior. Yet, studies suggestive of a spurious association often rely on small, non-random, and cross-sectional samples; thus, the extent to which the findings are generalizable to the broader population is unknown. With this in mind, the present study uses data from The National Lon

Juvenile homicide offenders: Why they were involved in serious crime.

The perpetration of murders by juveniles (individuals under age 18) has been a serious concern in the United States since the 1960s. As a result of four decisions by the United States Supreme Court during the 21st century, the likelihood that juvenile homicide offenders will be released back into society is substantially higher than it was in the year 2000. Given these changes in sentencing policies and practices, understanding why youths under 18 engage in homicidal behavior is more important than ever for two reasons: to prevent juveniles from killing in the first place and to determine whet

Age Gradient in Women's Crime: The Role of Welfare Reform.

We investigate how welfare reform in the U.S. in the 1990s shaped the age gradient in women's property crime arrests. Using Federal Bureau of Investigation data, we investigated the age-patterning of effects of welfare reform on women's arrests for property crime, the type of crime that welfare reform has been shown to affect. We found that welfare reform reduced women's property crime arrests by about 4%, with particularly strong effects for women ages 25-29, slightly stronger effects in states with stricter work incentives, and much stronger in states with high per capita criminal justice ex
