General Criminality as a Marker of Heterogeneity in Domestically Violent Men: Differences in Trauma History, Psychopathology, Neurocognitive Functioning, and Psychophysiology.

This study examined whether involvement in general criminal behavior was a useful marker of critical historic, psychological, and cognitive aspects of heterogeneity in domestically violent men. Two subgroups of domestically violent men, those with (n = 56) and without (n = 54) a history of criminal involvement, were compared with a group of nonviolent men (n = 82) on internalizing psychopathology, substance abuse, maltreatment in the family of origin, cognitive and executive functioning, and psychophysiological factors. Results found that domestically violent criminal men scored higher than th

Assertive community treatment and associations with delinquency.

This article draws on a prospective longitudinal study in which Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model fidelity and patient outcomes were assessed in twenty outpatient treatment teams. 530 severely mentally ill patients participated in the study. Delinquency outcomes were assessed three times during a two-year follow-up period. At baseline, 49% of the patients had a recent criminal history, meaning that they had at least one reported contact with the police and/or the justice system in the past year. Patients with a recent criminal history had more serious psychosocial problems at baseline

Knowledge Development Trajectories of Crime Prevention Domain: An Academic Study Based on Citation and Main Path Analysis.

This study performed main path analysis to explore the academic field of crime prevention. Studies were collected from the Web of Science database, and main path analysis was used to analyze the studies and identify influential authors and journals on the basis of the g-index and h-index. Cluster analysis was then performed to group studies with related themes. Wordle was used to output keywords and word clouds for each cluster, both of which were used as reference to name each cluster. Five clusters were identified, namely crime displacement control, crime prevention through environmental des

Effectiveness of a self-administered intervention for criminal thinking: Taking a Chance on Change.

The current study tested the effectiveness of a self-administered, cognitive-behavioral intervention targeting criminal thinking for inmates in segregated housing: Taking a Chance on Change (TCC). Participants included 273 inmates in segregated housing at state correctional institutions. Reductions in criminal thinking, as assessed by the Psychological Inventory of Criminal Styles-Simplified Version, were found in the general criminal thinking score as well as the proactive and reactive composite scores. Examination of demographic predictors of change (i.e., age, years of education, length of

Prevalence and public health implications of state laws that criminalize potential HIV exposure in the United States.

For the past three decades, legislative approaches to prevent HIV transmission have been used at the national, state, and local levels. One punitive legislative approach has been enactment of laws that criminalize behaviors associated with HIV exposure (HIV-specific criminal laws). In the USA, HIV-specific criminal laws have largely been shaped by state laws. These laws impose criminal penalties on persons who know they have HIV and subsequently engage in certain behaviors, most commonly sexual activity without prior disclosure of HIV-positive serostatus. These laws have been subject to intens

Challenging the prescientific frameworks of criminal justice: neurobiology and criminolytic interventions in the legalome era.

Contemporary systems of criminal justice are rooted in prescientific folk psychology assumptions related to moral fiber, free will, agency, and near-universal levels of willpower. For instance, people often believe that morally "defective" people make voluntary choices, failing to utilize their own self-control capacities. Given the wide acceptance of such beliefs, they are considered "normative" within law, serving to underpin retributive punishment. However, rapid advances in biological sciences-aided by multi-omics technologies-have illuminated the ways in which brain architecture and curre

Antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy: diagnostic dilemmas in classifying patterns of antisocial behavior in sentencing evaluations.

Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) and PCL-R psychopathy are critically examined regarding their application to sentencing determinations. PCL-R psychopathy is emerging in the literature as a more useful forensic diagnostic construct than APD, which appears flawed by multiple weaknesses. These include shifting diagnostic criteria, innumeracy problems, absence of symptom weighting, temporal instability, and the equivalence of some symptoms with substance abuse disorders. Additionally, APD overdiagnosis may result from inattention to issues of social context, trauma history, and symptom perva

A longitudinal study of housing status and crime in a homeless population.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that homelessness is associated with crime. Previous research suggests that this association is at least partially secondary to homeless status offenses (eg, vagrancy and trespassing resulting from behaviors intrinsic to homelessness). To investigate this relationship, this study compared criminal behavior in a homeless population under housed and unhoused conditions. METHODS: Reported criminal and housing histories of 255 homeless individuals were examined at 3 annual interviews. Lifetime criminal charges incurred while homeless vs housed were compared for

Marriage Markets and Male Mating Effort: Violence and Crime Are Elevated Where Men Are Rare.

The negative social outcomes in populations with male-biased sex ratios are a growing concern. In general, the expectation is of heightened violence as a result of excess men engaging in antisocial behavior and crime, thereby threatening societal stability. While intuitive, these claims are largely unsupported in the literature. Using mating market theory as our guide, we examine indicators of male mating effort, including (1) violent competition between men (homicide, aggravated assault) and (2) indicators of uncommitted sexual behavior (rape, sex offenses, and prostitution). Our unit of anal

Prisoners' Personal Networks in the Months Preceding Prison: A Descriptive Portrayal.

This study examined personal networks of adult male prisoners ( N = 250) during a high-risk period prior to their incarceration. We present a descriptive portrait of network size, density, and relational type, and we then document the nature of ties within that network, focusing specifically on alters' criminal involvement, criminal opportunity, and reinforcement of criminal behavior. We found that prisoners' networks were large and dense, and that they were composed primarily of family and romantic partners. Most prisoners are not embedded in a personal network saturated with criminal influen

A modified Sequential Intercept Model for people living with dementia to prevent interactions with the criminal legal system.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: People living with dementia (PLWD) may experience symptoms and behaviors that increase the risk of contact with the criminal legal system as arrestees. This manuscript aims to evaluate the Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) as a mechanism of reducing exposure to the criminal system for people living with dementia. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A secondary analysis of two complementary semi-structured interview studies of legal professionals (study 1) and caregivers of persons affected by frontotemporal dementia (study 2). Both studies collected insights and experiences

All Walks of Life: Editorial for the Special Issue on "The Impact of Psychopathy: Multidisciplinary and Applied Perspectives".

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve as Guest Editors of this Special Issue on "The impact of psychopathy: Multidisciplinary and applied perspectives." Psychopathy is a serious public health concern that has long attracted scholarly and clinical interest in both mental health and criminal justice fields. However, given its robust link with criminal behavior, research on psychopathy has largely developed with a primary emphasis on (male) adults within correctional settings. While the preponderance of work remains focused on these adult offenders, research on psychopathy has expanded in

Explaining the effectiveness of heroin-assisted treatment on crime reductions.

This study examines the relationship between heroin-assisted treatment versus methadone maintenance and the criminal activity of 1,015 individuals participating in a German model project. The main objective is to investigate how these treatments contribute to a decline of criminal behavior. The analyses are based upon self-reported criminal offence and police data on alleged criminals. Logistic regression is employed to explain the variance in the 12-month prevalence 1 year after program admission. The results clearly show a decline of criminal offences among participants receiving maintenance

The effect of neuroscientific evidence on sentencing depends on how one conceives of reasons for incarceration.

Neuroscientific evidence is increasingly utilized in criminal legal proceedings, prompting discussions about how such evidence might influence legal decisions. The effect of neuroscientific testimony on legal decisions remains uncertain, with some studies finding no effect, others reporting that neuroscience has a mitigating impact, and some indicating neuroscience evidence has an aggravating effect. The present study attempts to explain these divergent findings by showing that the effect of neuroscience evidence on sentencing interacts with beliefs about the goals of the criminal legal system

Forensic Psychiatry versus the Varieties of Delusion-Like Belief.

The available categorical constructs within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, do not allow forensic psychiatrists to distinguish easily between the varieties of delusion-like belief. This dilemma is especially challenging when seemingly delusional beliefs are shared online. Although the term "extreme overvalued belief" has been proposed to aid with such distinctions, its definition has conceptual problems, including diagnostic overlap with shared delusions, "extremism" that refers to behavior rather than belief, and the potential to be applied with prose

Functional Outcomes of Young Adults with Childhood ADHD: A Latent Profile Analysis.

Adults with childhood attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience impairment in core functional domains (e.g., educational attainment, occupational status, social relationships, substance abuse, and criminal behavior), but it is currently unclear which impairments co-occur and whether subgroups experience differentiable patterns, none, or all aforementioned functional domains. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to characterize patterns of impairment. Data from the Pittsburgh ADHD Longitudinal Study were used. The 317 participants were 25 years old and had childhood ADHD. LPA

Unique Dispositional Precursors to Early-Onset Conduct Problems and Criminal Offending in Adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to examine whether dispositional interpersonal callousness, negative emotionality, and hyperactivity/impulsivity uniquely influence the development of childhood-onset conduct problems and persistent criminal behavior in males, and to determine whether specific facets of negative emotionality (dysregulated anger versus anxiety) in childhood are differentially associated with the development of chronic antisocial behavior. METHOD: Childhood dispositional features and conduct problems were assessed semiannually using parent- and teacher-report measures acro

Identifying Associated Factors for Illegal Acts among Patients with Gambling Disorder and ADHD.

Illegal behaviors have been reported in gambling disorder (GD) as well as in individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Likewise, ADHD symptomatology has been observed in patients with GD. We aimed to examine the association between ADHD symptomatology, personality traits and impulsivity in a sample of treatment-seeking patients with GD (n = 204) with and without a criminal report. The subjects were evaluated before starting treatment using different self-administered instruments. Among those who had committed an illegal act, two groups were made depending on whether or

To examine the social cognitive processes underlying the relationship of addiction and criminality, we administered the Addiction Severity Index-CF (ASI-CF) and the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) to 35 participants (11 women) who had been released recently from jail or prison. ASI-CF revealed highest lifetime drug use for alcohol, followed by cannabis, cocaine, and heroin, with an average of 42 lifetime arrests in this ex-offender sample.
