Cronobacter sakazakii Infection in Early Postnatal Rats Impaired Contextual-Associated Learning: a Putative Role of C5a-Mediated NF-κβ and ASK1 Pathways.

This study was designed to test whether the Cronobacter sakazakii infection-impaired contextual learning and memory are mediated by the activation of the complement system; subsequent activation of inflammatory signals leads to alternations in serotonin transporter (SERT). To test this, rat pups (postnatal day, PND 15) were treated with either C. sakazakii (107 CFU) or Escherichia coli OP50 (107 CFU) or Luria bertani broth (100 μL) through oral gavage and allowed to stay with their mothers until PND 24. Experimental groups' rats were allowed to explore (PNDs 31-35) and then trained in contextu

The applicability of the SERS technique in food contamination testing - The detailed spectroscopic, chemometric, genetic, and comparative analysis of food-borne Cronobacter spp. strains.

Microorganisms assigned as Cronobacter are Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, bacteria widely distributed in nature, home environments, and hospitals. They can also be detected in foods, milk powder, and powdered infant formula (PIF). Additionally, as an opportunistic pathogen, Cronobacter may cause serious infections, sometimes leading to the death of neonates and infants. Thus, it is essential to test food products for the presence of Cronobacter spp. The currently used standard described in ISO 22964:2017 is a laborious method that could be easily replaced by surface-enhanced Raman sca

Protective Effects and Mechanism of a Novel Probiotic Strain Ligilactobacillus salivarius YL20 against Cronobacter sakazakii-Induced Necrotizing Enterocolitis In Vitro and In Vivo.

Exposure to probiotics in early life contributes to host intestinal development and prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Cronobacter sakazakii (C. sakazakii), an opportunistic pathogen, can cause NEC, bacteremia, and meningitis in neonates, but the research of probiotics against C. sakazakii is limited relative to other enteropathogens. Here, the protective effect and mechanism of a novel probiotic Ligilactobacillus salivarius (L. salivarius) YL20 isolated from breast milk on C. sakazakii-induced intestinal injury were explored by using two in vitro models, including an C. sakazakii-

A signal cascade amplification strategy based on RT-PCR triggering of a G-quadruplex DNAzyme for a novel electrochemical detection of viable Cronobacter sakazakii.

Cronobacter sakazakii is an important opportunistic food-borne pathogen, and it can cause severe diseases with main symptoms including neonatal meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sepsis. For the achievement of practical and convenient detection of viable C. sakazakii, a simple and robust strategy based on the cascade signal amplification of RT-PCR triggered G-quadruplex DNAzyme catalyzed reaction was firstly used to develop an effective and sensitive DNAzyme electrochemical assay. Without viable C. sakazakii in the samples there are no RT-PCR and DNAzyme products, which can cause a wea

Analysis of the cellulose synthase operon genes, bcsA, bcsB, and bcsC in Cronobacter species: Prevalence among species and their roles in biofilm formation and cell-cell aggregation.

Cronobacter species are emerging food-borne pathogens that cause severe sepsis, meningitis, and necrotizing entercolitis in neonates and infants. Bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella species produce extracellular cellulose which has been shown to be involved in rugosity, biofilm formation, and host colonization. In this study the distribution and prevalence of cellulose synthase operon genes (bcsABZC) were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis in 231 Cronobacter strains isolated from clinical, food, environmental, and unknown sources. Furthermore, bcsA a

Application of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and DNA sequencing-based SLST and MLST analysis for the identification of Cronobacter spp. isolated from environmental surveillance samples.

Cronobacter spp. are emerging infectious foodborne bacteria that can cause acute meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis in neonates and immunocompromised individuals. Although, little is known about its reservoirs or transmission routes, it has been linked to powdered infant formula worldwide. Three Cronobacter spp. (C. sakazakii, C. malonaticus, and C. turicensis) have been described as more virulent, and isolated frequently from infant meningitis cases. The estimated mortality rates are as high as 80% in infants. Thus, surveillance and typing of Cronobacter spp. isolated from food and envi

Inactivation of Emerging Opportunistic Foodborne Pathogens Cronobacter spp. and Arcobacter spp. on Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Products: Effects of Emerging Chemical and Physical Methods in Model and Real Food Systems-A Review.

The consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables is essential for a healthy diet as they contain a diverse composition of vitamins, minerals, fibre, and bioactive compounds. However, cross-contamination during harvest and post-harvest poses a high risk of microbial contamination. Therefore, handling fruit and vegetables during processing and contact with wet equipment and utensil surfaces is an ideal environment for microbial contamination and foodborne illness. Nevertheless, less attention has been paid to some emerging pathogens that are now increasingly recognised as transmissible to humans th
