Implicit learning of social information in contextual cueing.

Human attention is often guided by contextual cues that signal where or how to focus in complex environments. Research on object contextual cueing has largely emphasized spatial regularities, but it remains unclear whether socially meaningful information can also provide such guidance. Across three experiments using face stimuli, we examined whether social cues can serve as contextual cues independently of spatial arrangements. In all experiments, participants searched for a target face among distractor faces, with spatial configurations fully randomized on every trial, and contextual informat

Subungual hyperkeratosis as a diagnostic cue in crusted scabies.

Crusted scabies is a severe and uncommon variant of Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis infestation and typically arises in older adults with impaired cellular immunity. Secondary erythroderma and bacteremia are feared complications that may lead to increased morbidity. Herein, we report a case of crusted scabies with subungual involvement in a 65-year-old man with vascular dementia, schizophrenia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease presenting from an assisted living facility. At presentation, the patient was erythrodermic, alongside diffuse scaling with scattered excoriations and marked pal

Children see private correction as a cue to friendship.

Children use a number of cues to infer friendship. For instance, children believe that people who are similar, spend time together, and are loyal to each other are friends (Liberman & Shaw, 2019). Here, in two studies (total N = 524), we investigated whether 4- to 12-year-old children infer friendship using a novel cue: managing someone's reputation by correcting them in private. Children were asked whether an agent was better friends with a person they corrected in public, or one they corrected in private. Both younger (4- to 7-years-old) and older (8- to 12-years-old) children inferred stron

Development and validation of the food cue responsivity scale.

Food cues are ubiquitous in today's environment; however, there is heterogeneity as to the extent to which these cues impact eating behavior among individuals. This study examines the validity and reliability of the Food Cue Responsivity Scale (FCRS) to assess responsivity to distinct types of food cues. Items gathered from existing measures were combined in the FCRS to reflect two subdomains, uncontrolled eating behavior and cognitive rumination. The criterion validity of the FCRS was established using a paradigm that assesses psychophysiological responsivity to a craved food among adults wit

A pilot study of benzodiazepine cue-induced craving.

OBJECTIVES: The misuse of benzodiazepines is a growing concern due to increases in both access to these medications and their associated public health harms, most concerningly risk for overdose when combined with other substances. Although cue reactivity-the subjective and physiological response to cues or reminders of substance use-has been identified for most major classes of substances, it has yet to be studied with benzodiazepines. In this preliminary study, our objective was to assess whether images of benzodiazepines were associated with greater craving and anxiety than neutral images in

Astrocytes as cellular mediators of cue reactivity in addiction.

Relapse to addictive drug use remains a major medical problem worldwide. In rodents, glutamate release in the nucleus accumbens core triggers reinstated drug seeking in response to stress, and drug-associated cues and contexts. Glutamatergic dysregulation in addiction results in part from long-lasting adaptations in accumbens astroglia, including downregulation of the glutamate transporter GLT-1 and retraction from synapses after withdrawal from psychostimulants and opioids. While their capacity to clear glutamate is disrupted by drug use and withdrawal, accumbens astrocytes undergo rapid, tra

Touch as an auxiliary proprioceptive cue for movement control.

Recent studies extended the classical view that touch is mainly devoted to the perception of the external world. Perceptual tasks where the hand was stationary demonstrated that cutaneous stimuli from contact with objects provide the illusion of hand displacement. Here, we tested the hypothesis that touch provides auxiliary proprioceptive feedback for guiding actions. We used a well-established perceptual phenomenon to dissociate the estimates of reaching direction from touch and musculoskeletal proprioception. Participants slid their fingertip on a ridged plate to move toward a target without

VR cue-exposure treatment for bulimia nervosa.

Several approaches to the treatment of bulimia nervosa have proved effective, including cognitive-behavioral therapy; however, not all patients improve. It is therefore necessary to explore the possibilities of increasing the efficacy of such treatments. One way to attempt this is to incorporate new technologies. This review explores the possibility of developing a new, empirically validated procedure for the treatment of bulimia nervosa patients that involves cue exposure via virtual reality.

The dichoptiscope: an instrument for investigating cues to motion in depth.

A stereoscope displays 2-D images with binocular disparities (stereograms), which fuse to form a 3-D stereoscopic object. But a stereoscopic object creates a conflict between vergence and accommodation. Also, motion in depth of a stereoscopic object simulated solely from change in target vergence produces anomalous motion parallax and anomalous changes in perspective. We describe a new instrument, which overcomes these problems. We call it the dichoptiscope. It resembles a mirror stereoscope, but instead of stereograms, it displays identical 2-D or 3-D physical objects to each eye. When a pair

The effect of a retrieval cue on the return of spider fear.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Exposure therapy is often used as treatment for anxiety disorders. However, a change in context after exposure can result in fear renewal. This renewal can be attenuated by using retrieval cues stemming from the exposure context. The present study investigated the effect of such a cue in spider-fearful persons. METHODS: Thirty-three participants underwent an in vivo exposure session while wearing a bracelet (retrieval cue). After exposure, half of the participants continued to wear the bracelet at home until follow-up (cue groups); the other half handed over the bra

The influence of shape cues on the perception of lighting direction.

Three scene properties determine the luminances in the image of a shaded object: the material reflectance, the illuminant position, and the object's shape. Because all three properties determine the image, one cannot solve for any one property without knowing the other two. Nevertheless, people perceive consistent 3D shape and consistent lighting in shaded images; they must therefore be making assumptions about the unknown properties. We conducted two psychophysical experiments to determine how viewers use shape information to estimate the lighting direction from shaded images. In the first ex

Bimanual recoupling by visual cueing in callosal disconnection.

The cerebral control of bimanual movements is not completely understood. We investigated a 59-year-old, right-handed man who presented with an acute bimanual coordination deficit. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion involving the entire corpus callosum, which was found on stereotactic biopsy to be an ischemic infarct. Paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation indicated that the patient had a lack of interhemispheric inhibition, while intracortical inhibition in motor cortex of either side was normal. Functional magnetic resonance imaging showed activation of the left SMA, the bilat

Cue reactivity as a predictor of outcome with bulimia nervosa.

The present study sought to evaluate specific hypotheses concerning the relation between cue reactivity and outcome among women with bulimia nervosa. Participants were 135 women aged between 17 and 45 years with a current, primary diagnosis of bulimia nervosa who participated in a randomized clinical trial evaluating the additive efficacy of exposure and nonexposure-based behavior therapy, to a core of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Physiological, self-report, and behavioral measures of cue reactivity to individualized high-risk binge foods were obtained at pretreatment and posttreatment. P

Gravitational acceleration as a cue for absolute size and distance?

When an object's motion is influenced by gravity, as in the rise and fall of a thrown ball, the vertical component of acceleration is roughly constant at 9.8 m/sec2. In principle, an observer could use this information to estimate the absolute size and distance of the object (Saxberg, 1987a; Watson, Banks, von Hofsten, & Royden, 1992). In five experiments, we examined people's ability to utilize the size and distance information provided by gravitational acceleration. Observers viewed computer simulations of an object rising and falling on a trajectory aligned with the gravitational vector. Th

[Function of ECS as a cue in retrograde amnesia in the rat].

Two experiments were performed with rats to examine whether electroconvulsive shock (ECS), which is known to produce retrograde amnesia (RA), would serve as a dominant cue in the training trial. In Experiment I, after 6, 1, or 0 ECS preexposures , rats were received ECS immediately following one-trial passive avoidance training in a step through apparatus. Twenty-four h later, six ECS preexposure group showed a higher level of retention performance. Thus, the effects of ECS on RA were shown to be attenuated by the preexposure to ECS. In Experiment II, it was shown that ECS acquired a considera

Ensemble processing can be influenced by attentional cueing.

At any given moment, the human visual system encounters a wealth of sensory information that far exceeds the processing capacity of cognitive mechanisms such as visual attention and visual working memory. To overcome these capacity limitations, our visual system uses both ensemble perception and selective attention to navigate our visual environment. The goal of the current study is to explore potential interactions between these two adaptive cognitive processes. That is, we investigated whether spatial attention plays a role in forming ensemble representations. Specifically, we utilized a spa

The effect of vection on the use of optic flow cues.

When we move objects move past us in a relative pattern of motion referred to as optic flow. Modulations in optic flow can impact both our perception of self-motion (e.g. perceived distance travelled) and our feeling of self-motion, referred to as vection (e.g. speed of self-motion). The perception and feeling of self-motion have so far been studied independently, leaving open whether and how the two relate to each other. In the current study, stationary participants performed a self-motion task in virtual reality where they moved to previously indicated distances using constant velocity optic

Chromatic cues for the sign of defocus in the peripheral retina.

Detecting optical defocus at the retina is crucial for accurate accommodation and emmetropization. However, the optical characteristics of ocular defocus are not fully understood. To bridge this knowledge gap, we simulated polychromatic retinal image quality by considering both the monochromatic wavefront aberrations and chromatic aberrations of the eye, both in the fovea and the periphery (nasal visual field). Our study revealed two main findings: (1) chromatic and monochromatic aberrations interact to provide a signal to the retina (chromatic optical anisotropy) to discern positive from nega

The role of cue utilization in the detection of phishing emails.

This study was designed to examine the roles of cue utilization, phishing features and time pressure in the detection of phishing emails. During two experiments, participants completed an email sorting task containing both phishing and genuine emails. Participants were allocated to either a high or low time pressure condition. Performance was assessed via detection sensitivity and response bias. Participants were classified with either higher or lower cue utilization and completed a measure of phishing knowledge. When participants were blind to the nature of the study (N = 191), participants w
