Social structure, infectious diseases, disasters, secularism, and cultural change in America.

Why do cultures change? The present work examined cultural change in eight cultural-level markers, or correlates, of individualism in the United States, all of which increased over the course of the 20th century: frequency of individualist themes in books, preference for uniqueness in baby naming, frequency of single-child relative to multichild families, frequency of single-generation relative to multigeneration households, percentage of adults and percentage of older adults living alone, small family size, and divorce rates (relative to marriage rates). We tested five key hypotheses regardin

Simulated microgravity triggers a membrane adaptation to stress in E. coli REL606.

Investigating the evolution of Escherichia coli in microgravity offers valuable insights into microbial adaptation to extreme environments. Here the effects of simulated microgravity (SµG) on gene expression and genome evolution of E. coli REL606, a strain evolved terrestrially for 35 years, is explored. The transcriptomic changes for glucose-limited and glucose-replete conditions over 24 h illustrate that SµG increased the expression of genes involved in stress response, biofilm, and metabolism. A greater number of differentially expressed genes related to the general stress response (GSR) an

DNA fingerprint changes in tuberculosis: reinfection, evolution, or laboratory error?

BACKGROUND: DNA fingerprint patterns of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains vary within individuals and between epidemiologically linked individuals because of pattern evolution, new infections, and laboratory error. We explored the importance of these factors. METHODS: Cultures from individuals in northern Malawi who had been diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) during 1996-2001 were fingerprinted with restriction fragment-length polymorphism (RFLP). Probable laboratory error was inferred by use of dates or isolated positive cultures. Pattern evolution was explored within and between individuals,

275 years since the epidemic of plague in Cluj: Dr. Alexandru Lenghel's contribution to its investigation.

Plague is one of the most impressive diseases in the cultural history of mankind. Its lethality has influenced the evolution of society and it is frequently represented in fine arts and literature. The principality of Transylvania was also affected by this infection, the plague having strongly impacted both economic and social development. Between 1738 and 1739 an important plague epidemic spread in Transylvania. The authors introduce and discuss a less known work on this epidemic, with focus on its impact on the city of Cluj - a book written in 1930 by Dr. Alexandru Lenghel, who later became

From seals to survival: "India's Cinderella stamp advocacy in the global tuberculosis eradication movement: A visual and historical examination".

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of humanity's oldest and deadliest infectious diseases, yet its history is not written solely in medical texts and epidemiological tables. An extraordinary parallel narrative exists in philately-through tuberculosis seals and Christmas seals-those documents global social conscience, public health advocacy, and collective responsibility. This article traces the evolution of TB seals from their inception in early twentieth-century Europe to their widespread global adoption and eventual indigenization in India. Emphasis is placed on the sequential development of desi

[Infant and early childhood mortality in Italy from the eighteenth to the twentieth century: long-term tendencies and regional differences].

From the beginning of national unification (1861) onwards, the process of the decline in infant mortality has been well-known and several explanatory hypotheses have been offered about the time differences in the decline on different territories. Using a still fragmentary and heterogeneous documentary data basis, this article has attempted to outline the evolution of the mortality of children as from the eighteenth century, stressing the permanence of territorial particularities in the long run. Before the beginning of the irreversible decline (as from the second half of the nineteenth century

Fever: the old and the new.

Early concepts of fever as a major feature of illness range from those of Hippocrates to those present in the Bible and have influenced cultural attitudes during several major European pandemics of both black plague and tuberculosis, the "white plague" of the early 19th century. Evolving ideas of thermoregulation and fever in the 19th century followed the first extensive use of the clinical thermometer by Wunderlich. Experimental studies on the pathogenesis of fever during the last 30 years suggest that fever and certain aspects of both immunoregulation and inflammation are produced by a singl

[Interpreting the pulse diagnosis diagrams and the pulse principles in Nan Jing in both Chinese and Japanese editions].

This paper systematically reviewed the evolvement and development of pulse diagnosis illustrations in the annotated versions of Nan Jing in both Chinese and Japanese editions. It compared and analysed the content and characteristics of the three pulse diagram systems - the Ding, the Hua and the Zhang in China with that in the annotated edition of Nan Jing in the Japanese edition in the Edo period of Japan. The paper demonstrated the core function of pulse diagrams in interpreting the theories of pulse in Nan Jing. It was found that the pulse diagram illustrations evolved through multiple dynas

Exploring the Role of Genetic Diversity and Cultural Norms in COVID-19 Vulnerability: A Global Analysis.

The COVID-19 disease outbreak is the deadliest viral pandemic our generation has experienced, and much uncertainty remains over the varying vulnerability of different populations to the virus. This study investigates whether long-term evolutionary processes, such as genetic diversity and culturally embedded behavioural norms, can help explain why countries experienced different levels of COVID-19 infections and mortalities. Using a sample of 133 countries, we find that populations with higher expected genetic heterozygosity and greater historical exposure to infectious diseases are associated

Extensive locomotor versatility across a global sample of hunter-gatherer societies.

Studies of hunter-gatherer locomotion inform a wide range of academic fields, from human behavioural ecology and hominin evolution to sports science and evolutionary health. Despite celebrated ethnographic examples of hunter-gatherer locomotor proficiency in running, climbing, swimming and diving, there has been limited systematic analysis of cross-cultural variation in hunter-gatherer locomotor versatility. We conducted a systematic cross-cultural analysis of hunter-gatherer locomotion, coding locomotor behaviour from over 900 ethnographic documents. Our results indicated that high levels of

Middle childhood and modern human origins.

The evolution of modern human life history has involved substantial changes in the overall length of the subadult period, the introduction of a novel early childhood stage, and many changes in the initiation, termination, and character of the other stages. The fossil record is explored for evidence of this evolutionary process, with a special emphasis on middle childhood, which many argue is equivalent to the juvenile stage of African apes. Although the "juvenile" and "middle childhood" stages appear to be the same from a broad comparative perspective, in that they begin with the eruption of t

Karyotypes and Sex Chromosomes in Two Australian Native Freshwater Fishes, Golden Perch (Macquaria ambigua) and Murray Cod (Maccullochella peelii) (Percichthyidae).

Karyotypic data from Australian native freshwater fishes are scarce, having been described from relatively few species. Golden perch (Macquaria ambigua) and Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii) are two large-bodied freshwater fish species native to Australia with significant indigenous, cultural, recreational and commercial value. The arid landscape over much of these fishes' range, coupled with the boom and bust hydrology of their habitat, means that these species have potential to provide useful evolutionary insights, such as karyotypes and sex chromosome evolution in vertebrates. Here we appl

Role playing in human evolution: from life to art, and everything in between.

Role playing is a central, but underappreciated, process in human evolution. It is a feature not only of the theatrical arts, but of everyday social interactions. While some role playing is limited to enacting various personas of the self (e.g., wife, accountant, mother), others involve an impersonation of people. The most basic form of impersonation is proto-acting, which refers to a transient engagement in character portrayal, such as when we quote a friend during a conversation. During proto-acting, we "act as" some other person. However, there are other means of acting in a similar manner

Speech adapts to differences in dentition within and across populations.

We test the hypothesis that a specific anatomical feature, the dental malocclusion associated with reduced dental wear, causes languages to adapt by relying more heavily on labiodental consonants. In contrast to previous work on this topic, we adopt a usage-based approach that directly examines the relative frequency of such labiodental sounds within phonetically transcribed word lists and texts from thousands of languages. Labiodentals are shown to be very infrequent in the languages of hunter gatherers, who tend to have edge-to-edge bites as opposed to the overbite and overjet observed in po

The prehistory of speech and language is revealed in brain damage.

The aim of this paper is to develop further the idea that symptoms that emerge in speech and language processing following brain damage can make a contribution to discussions of the early evolution of language. These diverse impairments are called aphasia, and this paper proposes that the recovery of a non-fluent aphasia syndrome following stroke could provide insights into the course of the pre-history of human language evolution. The observable symptoms emerge during recovery, crucially enabled by (dis)inhibition in parallel with a range of impairments in action processing (apraxias), includ

[Proteus mirabilis septic arthritis].

Acute septic arthritis is rare. It is associated with poor prognosis in terms of mortality and morbidity. We report the case of a 61-year old patient with spontaneous Proteus mirabilis septic arthritis. He suffered from complicated diabetes associated with positive blood cultures and synovial fluid cultures. Patient's evolution was favorable thanks to early diagnosis and initiation of adequate antibiotic therapy. Proteus mirabilis septic arthritis is rare. On that basis we conducted a literature review of cases of Proteus mirabilis pyogenic arthritis to highlight the risk factors, pathogenesis
