Increasing Care Partners' Capacity for Supporting Individuals Living with Dementia Through Bravo Zulu: Achieving Excellence in Relationship-Centered Dementia Care.

The need for person- and relationship-centered care (PCC/RCC) in Alzheimer's disease and other dementias is well established. Recognizing the limitations of PCC in fully honoring the intricate interdependencies between care partners and persons living with dementia, a new training program called Bravo Zulu was developed. This comprehensive, 12-hour dementia training program aims to enhance personhood beliefs and self-efficacy among care partners, improving the experience of care and support for both people living with dementia and their care partners. Responses from 182 participants who comple

Mental Health Access in the United States.: A Cross-Ethnic Comparative Study.

The prevalence and impact of mental health challenges among racially and ethnically diverse populations have received growing attention in recent years. This study investigates the factors associated with mental health service utilization and unmet mental health care needs among minoritized adults in the United States. Drawing on data from the 2021-2022 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), an annual survey of the U.S. civilian, noninstitutionalized population that understands public health conditions, this study included a sample of Asian, Black/African American, and Hispanic participants

Multilingual Digital Search Behavior Reveals Cultural Disparities in Vitiligo Information Needs in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo can cause substantial psychosocial distress, including stigma, depression, and social exclusion. Cultural factors shape disease perception and information needs. Online search queries provide real-time indicators of unmet public interests. We investigated language- and culture-associated differences in vitiligo-related online information seeking in Germany to inform culturally competent dermatologic care. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study using anonymized data from the Google Ads Keyword Planner (October 2019-May 2023). Search terms related to viti

Stigma, medical mistrust, and perceived racism may affect PrEP awareness and uptake in black compared to white gay and bisexual men in Jackson, Mississippi and Boston, Massachusetts.

Gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) account for more than two thirds of new HIV infections in the U.S., with Black MSM experiencing the greatest burden. Antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can reduce MSM's vulnerability to HIV infection. Uptake of PrEP has been limited, particularly among racial and ethnic minority MSM. Four semi-structured focus groups with gay and bisexual men and other MSM at risk for HIV infection were convened in Boston and Jackson in late 2013. The analysis plan utilized a within-case, across-case approach to code and analyze emergin

Perceptions of the Black population on fertility care: A scoping review.

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), offer hope for people struggling with infertility. Studies demonstrate that disparities in access and experiences with fertility care exist among different racial groups, particularly affecting Black women. This scoping review aims to explore Black women's perceptions of fertility care and psychosocial barriers that they encounter when accessing care. This scoping review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) Checklist. Three databas

Developing a culturally adapted competency framework for community paramedicine practice in Saudi Arabia.

Community paramedicine (CP) has emerged globally as a model for extending healthcare access, but little evidence exists on how it can be adapted to the sociocultural and systemic context of Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to develop a culturally tailored competency framework for CP to inform education, practice, and policy. A qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with 15 experts from diverse regions and professional roles in Saudi Arabia was adopted. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify the core competencies. To complement the qualitative synthesis and explore structural pa

Multicultural Recommendations to Guide Stroke Care: A Document Review of International Stroke Guidelines.

Stroke disproportionately affects individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, often leading to poorer outcomes. Although stroke guidelines are essential for ensuring evidence-based care, the extent to which they incorporate cultural considerations remains unclear. This document review aims to systematically review international stroke guidelines for the inclusion of culture-related recommendations that support equitable stroke care. We conducted a document review of English-language international stroke guidelines published between June 2019 and May 2024, using a struct

Culture & risk taking in adolescents' behaviors.

Adolescents constitute the only segment of the population in the United States that has not seen a decrease in its mortality and morbidity over the last 4 decades. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified six risk-taking behaviors that place adolescents at risk: unintentional injuries and violence, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual behaviors, unhealthy dietary behaviors, and physical inactivity. This list is of particular concern for the increasingly diverse racial and ethnic youth of America who have been disproportionately affected by both morbidity and mor

From Awareness to Action: Co-Designing Culturally Safe and Equitable Rehabilitation in Canada - Protocol for the Two-Phase Ireach Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Inequities in access, engagement, and outcomes persist across outpatient rehabilitation services in Canada, disproportionately affecting Indigenous Peoples, newcomers and refugees, gender- and sexually-diverse individuals, and people with lower income. Although rehabilitation professionals report strong awareness of equity, diversity, inclusion, and cultural safety principles, a persistent gap remains between knowledge and day-to-day clinical practice. Existing resources largely focus on education without providing practical, clinic-level tools or aligned patient-facing supports to

Beginning with the end in mind: evaluating outcomes of cultural competence instruction in a doctor of physical therapy programme.

The education of physical therapists must prepare them for autonomous practice providing culturally appropriate care. Models are available to guide curricular changes for cultural competence but little is available on methods to assess the outcomes. This article describes two methods to measure outcomes of cultural competence instruction in physical therapy education. These methods are the integrated standardised patient examination (ISPE) and a refugee screening program. These outcomes will determine how cultural curricular changes will drive student learning. The ISPE assesses cultural compe

Language barriers in mental healthcare: A critical analysis.

In multicultural healthcare settings, language barriers pose significant challenges, particularly in mental health where nuanced communication is vital. This manuscript examines the impact of limited English proficiency (LEP) on mental healthcare in New Zealand, where a substantial portion of the population and healthcare workforce are foreign-born. Despite official recommendations, professional interpreter use remains low, compromising care quality for LEP patients. The paper explores interpreters' roles beyond interpretation, including cultural mediation, while noting limitations in interpre

Eating Disorders as a Public Health Challenge: A Case Study of Inclusive, Systems-Oriented Treatment in the US Southeast.

Eating disorders in the United States have increased substantially over the past 2 decades, with additional exacerbation during the COVID-19 pandemic. These conditions disproportionately affect adolescents, young adults, and sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations, reflecting the influence of stigma, discrimination, and broader social determinants of health. Given their complexity, high comorbidity, and elevated mortality risk, eating disorders represent a significant public health concern requiring a continuum of care that spans outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential, and inpat

Challenges for implementing culturally competent obstetric services in an Indigenous context in Mexico.

Obstetric healthcare for Indigenous women remains a severe problem in low-income countries with great cultural diversity and a colonial past. The work of health professionals to prevent complications leading to maternal deaths is paramount, yet in these contexts, they face significant challenges in implementing culturally competent services. This paper aims to present findings from an ethnographic study that attempted to document the experience of health professionals providing obstetric services in order to show the complex sociocultural contexts in which they perform their work.
