BACKGROUND: The mental health consequences of exposure to childhood trauma have been little studied among adolescents in low-income and-middle-income countries (LMICs), despite a relatively high burden of trauma in LMIC populations. We investigated associations between trauma and adolescent psychiatric disorders in the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort, Brazil.
METHODS: In the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort, current psychiatric diagnoses (anxiety, mood, attention-hyperactivity, and conduct-oppositional disorders) were assessed at age 15 years (caregiver-report Development and Well-being Assessment), and a

Tendinopathies in the hand and wrist are common in athletes. This article reviews some of the common hand and wrist conditions, such as trigger digits, first dorsal compartment tendonitis, and extensor carpi ulnaris tendonitis. In addition, it reviews less commonly seen tendon conditions of the flexor carpi radialis and ulnaris, intersection syndrome, and extensor pollicis entrapment conditions. Diagnosis, nonoperative and operative treatment, and postoperative recommendations and return to play are also discussed.

Adults experiencing homelessness are disproportionately affected by mental health problems and the risk factors for them (i.e., adverse childhood experiences [ACEs], intimate partner violence [IPV], and cumulative trauma). However, little is known about whether there are sex/gender differences in the associations between ACEs, IPV, and cumulative trauma with mental health problems among this population. This study examined whether sex/gender moderated the association between (a) 10 widely studied ACEs or IPV or (b) cumulative trauma (i.e., cumulative ACEs, or cumulative ACEs and IPV) with ment

Knee injuries are one of the most common complaints in sports medicine. Magnetic resonance imaging is an essential adjunct to clinical evaluation for many traumatic injuries and overuse conditions. Given the heavy use of knee magnetic resonance imaging, developing faster magnetic resonance imaging acquisition methods and deployment in clinical practice would be valuable. In this article, we illustrate a spectrum of knee abnormalities from our clinical practice, utilizing a recently developed, publicly available sub-5-minute knee magnetic resonance imaging protocol with super-resolution image r

Volleyball is a very popular sport worldwide, and both the indoor and outdoor versions are played at the Olympics. The several different positions have unique associated injuries. Some positions require fast movements and reflexes; others require strength and power. Given the repetitive jumping and shoulder movements, some of the positions are susceptible to chronic overuse injuries. Others are related to landing awkwardly or taking powerful hits/blocks from the ball. Indoor volleyball, played on a firm surface, has more of an impact on players compared with beach volleyball played on sand. Th

INTRODUCTION: Breaking, often mislabeled as breakdancing in the media, is a dance style originating from the Bronx of New York in the early 1970s. A unique condition in this population is a form of alopecia known as "headspin hole," or "breakdancer overuse syndrome" of the scalp. This form of hair loss may show a variety of patterns based on the activities of the dancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between alopecia and breaking, the level of concern dancers have regarding hair loss, barriers to medical treatment, and how it affects their dancing.
METHODS: Thi

CONTEXT: Injury prevention programs are effective when implemented in team sports, but many recreational runners have less access to such focused interventions or peer support and often seek other sources to learn about injury reduction strategies.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore runners' motivations in attending a prehabilitation (prehab) for runners workshop, establish their comprehension of prehab, and identify barriers to ongoing engagement with injury prevention.
DESIGN: Qualitative study using focus groups.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Twenty-two runners participating in prehab fo

Both lower extremities and lower back are common sources of injury for cyclists. For providers to optimize care within this area of sports medicine, they need to understand the most common sources of injury in this population. Cycling presents a unique challenge: treating both the athlete and the complex relationship between rider and bicycle. Physicians should not replace the role of a professional bike fitter and should view these individuals as integral members of the team to alleviate current and prevent future injury. This article explores common lower extremity and lumbar back overuse in

Overuse-related musculoskeletal injuries mostly affect athletes, especially if involved in preseason conditioning, and military populations; they may also occur, however, when pathological or biological conditions render the musculoskeletal system inadequate to cope with a mechanical load, even if moderate. Within the MOVIDA (Motor function and Vitamin D: toolkit for risk Assessment and prediction) Project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Defence, a systematic review of the literature was conducted to support the development of a transportable toolkit (instrumentation, protocols and referenc

INTRODUCTION: Overuse injuries often start with a musculoskeletal complaint, which can progress over time to an injury. Little or no information is known about the development and severity of overuse injuries in military recruits. This study describes the musculoskeletal complaints in Dutch military recruits during their basic training and examines potential predictive factors for dropout due to injury.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, Dutch military recruits reported complaints of the lower body weekly using a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) pain score chart during their basic training.

Athletes are subject to traumatic and repetitive stress injuries at the elbow joint as a result of high levels of forces imparted across the elbow. Injuries can be acute to the point of tissue failure, or chronic as a result of repetitive overuse. Complete restoration of elbow function must be achieved to allow the athlete to return to their prior level of function. Systematic and progressive rehabilitation programs can help avoid overstressing healing tissues. Treatment programs are designed to restore full motion, muscular strength, endurance, and neuromuscular control. Multiphased rehabilit

Upper extremity tennis injuries are most commonly characterized as overuse injuries to the wrist, elbow, and shoulder. The complex anatomy of these structures and their interaction with biomechanical properties of tennis strokes contributes to the diagnostic challenges. A thorough understanding of tennis kinetics, in combination with the current literature surrounding diagnostic and treatment methods, will improve clinical decision-making.

Sport injuries are common in children and teenaggers, especially overuse injuries. Typical musculoskelotal disorders include apophyseal pains or avulsion, stess fractures, and also epiphyseal ostoochondritis. Some lesions are specific according the practice, such spine or wrist lesions. Prevention of sport injury should be the main priority as well for the parents than the coaches and children themselves. Proper education and preparation, specific training and streching are essential for all sports activities.

Chronic Achilles tendinopathy has been described as the most common overuse injury in sports medicine. Several treatment modalities such as activity modification, heel lifts, arch supports, stretching exercises, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, and eccentric loading are known as standard treatment mostly without proven evidence. After failed conservative therapy, invasive treatment may be considered. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been successfully used in soft-tissue pathologies like lateral epicondylitis, plantar fasciitis, tendinopathy of the shoulder and also in bone and ski

There is increasing attention to medical problems of musicians. Many studies find a high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in musicians, ranging from 73.4% to 87.7%, and string players have the highest prevalence of musculoskeletal problems. This paper examines the various positions and movements of the upper extremities in string players: 1) basic postures for holding instruments, 2) movements of left upper extremity: fingering, forearm posture, high position and vibrato, 3) movements of right upper extremity: bowing, bow angles, pizzicato and other bowing techniques. A spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon is associated with rheumatoid arthritis, fractures of the wrist, systemic or local steroids and repetitive, and excessive abnormal motion of the wrist joint. The authors encountered a case of a spontaneous rupture of the EPL tendon. The patient had no predisposing factors including trauma or steroid injection. Although the patient had a positive rheumatoid factor, he did not demonstrate other clinical or radiological findings of rheumatoid arthritis. During surgery, the EPL tendon was found to be ruptured at the extensor retina
