Orthodontic treatment of a transposed gigantic canine --a case report.

Cuspid gigantism or radicomegaly is a rare occurrence often associated with a hereditary, X-linked condition, called oculo-cardio-facio-dental (OFCD)syndrome. This syndrome is also characterized by atrial septal defects and/or ventricular septal defects, congenital cataracts and unusual facial characteristics.Confirmation of this syndrome is often provided by dentists or orthodontists when they diagnose an extremely large canine root length from the panoramic radiograph. The following case report shows a multidisciplinary approach to the dental treatment of a patient with OFCD syndrome and a c

Prevalence of crown trauma in free-ranging maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) in central Brazil.

Nineteen free-ranging maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) were captured in central Brazil from April through November 2003. Oral cavity examination revealed 34 teeth with crown trauma in twelve animals. Canine teeth were most commonly affected (44.2%), followed by premolar (29.4%) and incisor teeth (26.5%). Trauma to maxillary teeth (67.7%) was more frequent compared with mandibular teeth (32.3 %). The majority of dental fractures were located at the cuspid portion of the crown (56.0%). Slab fractures were the most frequent type (37.0%), followed by horizontal (24.0%), oblique (24.0%) and lon

A lesion of endodontic origin misdiagnosed as a globulomaxillary cyst.

This report presents a case of a lesion originating from a pulpless central incisor misdiagnosed as a globulomaxillary cyst. The initial diagnosis of globulomaxillary cyst was made solely from radiographs by observing an almond-shaped radiolucency between the lateral incisor and cuspid. No pulp testing was performed before surgical removal of the lesion. The final diagnosis of an endodontic lesion caused solely by a pulpless central incisor was complicated by the initial lack of a pulpal response from the lateral incisor next to the surgical site. By delaying the start of endodontic treatment,

Orthodontic extrusion and implant restoration to manage localized advanced bone loss: a clinical case review.

Restorative dentists must consider and respect the preferences of their patients when developing treatment plans. They must also communicate openly with both the patient and their interdisciplinary team regarding treatment objectives, particularly in challenging cases such as the one presented herein, in which the patient had severe recession above her upper laterals and cuspids, was congenitally missing molars, and had a history of full-mouth scaling and root planing as well as periodontal surgery in the maxillary arch. This case incorporated four phases of treatment--endodontics, orthodontic

Oral and craniofacial manifestations in a Hunter syndrome patient with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A case report.

We described herein the oral and craniofacial features of a 7-year-old boy, diagnosed in utero with mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II), who was treated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) at 70 days of age. The main oral clinical findings were the following: macroglossia, posterior cross-bite, crowding, pointed cuspid teeth, delayed tooth eruption, retained primary teeth, and enamel hypoplasia. The image examination showed: retention eruption, posterior primary teeth with short roots, absence of some permanent teeth, and stretching of the stylohyoid processes bilaterally. This p

An unfamiliar presentation of a lateral periodontal cyst.

Lateral periodontal cyst, developmental in origin, typically is observed in the cuspid-bicuspid region of the mandible and less frequently in the maxilla. It may arise initially as a dentigerous cyst developing by expansion of the follicle along the lateral surface of the crown which eventually comes to lie on the lateral aspect of the root if tooth eruption is normal. Alternatively, it may arise from the cell rests of malassez. The incidence of lateral periodontal cysts has been reported to be less than 1% and these cysts represent nearly 0.8% of all central cysts of the maxillary bone. Here

An Unusually Large Parakeratinised Odontogenic Keratocyst in the Maxilla With Extension Into the Floor of the Maxillary Sinus.

Parakeratinised odontogenic keratocyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst affecting the jaw with aggressive behaviour, rapid growth, extension into adjacent structures, and a high recurrence rate of 4.4% in either jaw. This cyst usually occurs in the molar-ramus region of the mandible. If it occurs in the maxilla, the cyst can traverse through the trabecular bone marrow spaces resulting in expansion more mediolaterally than in the buccolingual direction. Here, we present you a case of peripherally occurring parakeratinised variant of odontogenic keratocyst in a 20-year-old-male in relation to

The histomorphologic spectrum of the gingival cyst in the adult.

Gingival cysts with clinical manifestations are relatively uncommon lesions. The present study adds thirty-three new cases to the literature and analyzes their clinical and histologic features. The mandibular cuspid and first premolar region was found to be the most common location. The epithelial lining of the cysts was of several types. The most common type was a thin, flattened lining with or without localized thickenings (buds). Other types included nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium, keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, and parakeratinized epithelium with palisading basa

Two-unit cantilevered resin-bonded fixed partial denture as a substitute for a prosthodontic-orthodontic treatment plan: a 5-year case report.

In this case report, we describe the successful long-term treatment of a patient with dental agenesis. The initial treatment plan included an orthodontic phase to provide adequate space for replacing missing lateral incisors with implants. However, because of some complications encountered after 2 years of orthodontic treatment, a revised treatment plan was considered to achieve functional and esthetic goals. The patient was completely satisfied 5 years after being treated with two 2-unit cantilevered resin-bonded fixed partial dentures supported by the cuspids. This conservative treatment pla

[Semi-attached quad-helix appliance can expand the maxillary arches in patients with cleft lip and palate before alveolar bone grafting].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effect of semi-attached quad-helix appliance in expanding the narrow maxillary arches in patients with cleft lip and palate. METHODS: 15 cases with cleft lip and palate were selected and treated by semi-attached quad-helix appliance. Before, during, and after treatment, the dental arch width between cuspid, the first premolar and first molar were measured. RESULTS: The upper dental arches of all patients were expanded effectively in about five months. After orthodontic treatment, the upper dental arches were expanded, and the teeth were alined regularly, w

[Surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion: a retrospective study].

Transverse maxillary hypoplasia, in adolescents and adults, may be corrected by means of a 'surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion' (SARME). The results of 7 patients who were treated by means of a SARME, are presented. Attention is paid to the technique, the type of expansion, and the stability of the expansion of the maxilla 1-1.5 years after SARME. The mean expansion between the cuspids was 4.7 mm (sd 1.7) and between the first molars 5.6 mm (sd 3.2). The SARME technique appeared to give rise to a predictable result and a sufficient amount of expansion, although the sample is small a

Bone grafting for the alveolar cleft defect.

Seventy-five percent of all cleft lip and palate patients have osseous defects of the alveolus. Bone grafting of this defect normalizes facial and dental function. Failure to reconstruct the osseous deformity may result in oronasal fistula, fluid reflux, speech pathology, anteroposterior deficiency of the maxilla, transverse deficiency of the maxilla, lack of bone support for the incisors and cuspids, dental crowding, and facial asymmetry. Bone grafting unifies the maxilla and is best done after the majority of facial growth is complete and the secondary dentition is erupting. This is known as

Tooth ultrastructure of late triassic Haramiyidae.

Six molars of Haramiyidae from the French lower Rhaetic were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and by electron diffraction. Typical polished wear facets were located on the tops and on the occlusal bases of cuspids. Enamel was found to have had a structural pattern defined as "pre-prismatic", consisting of a repetitive pinnate orientation of the c-axes of apatite crystallites but without interprismatic material. Peritubular dentin was not found, but hydroxyapatite deposition in the dentinal tubular lumens was observed, whereas typical denticles with dentinal tubules an

Autogenous rib graft for reconstruction of alveolar bone defects in cleft patients. Long-term follow-up results.

In a retrospective study (mean follow-up 76 months), the use of a free autogenous rib graft for reconstruction of anterior residual bone defects in seventeen cleft patients is evaluated on a long term basis. The results show recurrence of a palatal oronasal fistula in 2 out of 17 patients. 6 patients had acceptable results, while 9 had good to excellent scores at all sites. The costal graft material does not prevent permanent upper cuspids from erupting into this bone, after its incorporation. It is concluded that autogenous rib bone is a good material for secondary bone grafting of the residu

[The question of root resorption. Is the risk of root resorption related to the typology of the face?].

The mechanisms involved in root resorption are of the same nature than those leading to bone resorption. The state of calcification and the local conditions in the microenvironment are responsible for the different responses of alveolar bone and root with regard to calcified matrix resorption. Root resorption is commonly observed in association with impacted cuspids, acute chronical trauma, inflammatory or idiopathic conditions. Root resorption is more frequent in females and is independent on facial typology or orthodontic technique. Critical conditions to root integrity are often associated

A pilot study of the clinical problem of regionally anesthetizing the pulp of an acutely inflamed mandibular molar.

The diplomates of the American Association of Endodontists were surveyed regarding difficulties in regionally anesthetizing acutely painful mandibular molar teeth. Frequently patients developed evidence of adequate regional block anesthesia but experienced pain when the dentist attempted access. A pilot projection was undertaken to determine if a scientific basis existed for this problem. With the animal under general anesthesia, the mandibular nerve of a cat was isolated and then regionally blocked. A stimulating electrode was implanted in a cuspid tooth and a receiving electrode in the corte

Calcification of glutaraldehyde-preserved porcine xenografts in young patients.

In a series of 568 patients with glutaraldehyde-preserved porcine xenografts followed for up to 3 1/2 years, calcification and stenosis of the xenograft has proved to be an important cause of valve failure. We have seen this complication only in children and adolescents. Seven of 54 patients under 16 years of age at the time of initial operation have required reoperation for calcification and prosthetic stenosis. Three patients who died had calcified, stenosed prosthesis at autopsy. The calcification has involved all of the cusps of the affected prostheses, and the calcified area often was enc
