Sustainable Bacterial Control of Hatching Eggshells Using Essential Oils.

Background: Decontamination of poultry surfaces through appropriate hygiene and sanitation measures can partially mitigate bacterial problems, as this process does not result in the complete elimination of bacteria. Thus, the remaining bacteria can persist and contaminate eggshells. Therefore, regardless of the rigor of the sanitary standards applied on farms, it is suggested that hatching eggs be subjected to the sanitization process. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of essential oil-based antibacterial agents in sanitizing eggs. Results: The results indicated that essential oils from

From lemongrass to cellulose nanocrystals: Synthesis, characterization, and application in postharvest quality control of cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum).

Developing natural and multifunctional edible coatings that preserve fruit quality and delay ripening while minimizing synthetic preservative use remains a critical challenge in postharvest technology. In this study, lemongrass straw, an abundant agricultural residue, was upcycled into cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) through alkaline-bleaching pretreatment and sulfuric acid hydrolysis, and employed as a natural stabilizer for clove essential oil (CEO)-based Pickering emulsions (CEO-PE). The CNCs exhibited rod-like morphology and high crystallinity, while the optimized CEO-PE showed a droplet siz

Zinc oxide nanoemulsions prevent kidney stone formation and protect renal function in rats.

Kidney stones have a high recurrence rate, with around 50% of patients encountering one within 10 years of treatment. Crud Cymbopogon Proximus (CP) was used in this work to develop a novel, eco-friendly, and non-toxic approach of ZnO nanoemulsions to assess the protective effects against ethylene glycol-induced renal stones and rat kidney tissue damage in male albino rats. ZnO@CP nanoemulsions were created using high-speed homogenization and the wet chemical precipitation technique. The properties of synthesized powder were characterized using ultraviolet (UV)–visible spectroscopy, Fourier tra

Review of Malaysian medicinal plants with potential wound healing activity.

Wound is defined as the damage to biological tissues including skin, mucous membranes and organ tissues. The acute wound heals in less than 4 weeks without complications, while a chronic wound takes longer than 6 weeks to heal. Wound healing occurs in 4 phases, namely, coagulation, inflammatory, proliferative and remodeling phases. Triclosan and benzalkonium chloride are commonly used as skin disinfectants in wound healing. However, they cause allergic contact dermatitis and antibiotic resistance. Medicinal plants are widely studied due to the limited availability of wound healing agents. The

Essential oils block cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 delta variant.

Aiming to fill a gap in the literature, we aimed to identify the most promising EOs blocking in vitro cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 delta variant without conferring human cytotoxicity and provide insights into the influence of their composition on these activities. Twelve EOs were characterized by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The antiviral and cytotoxicity activities were determined using the cell-based pseudoviral entry with SARS-CoV-2 delta pseudovirus and the XTT assay in HeLa cells expressing human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (HeLa ACE-2), respectively. Essential Oils and Their Components Control Behaviour of Yellow Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) Larvae.

Beetle Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) is a well-known pest of grain and flour in food stores and grocery shops. Recently, commercial cultivation of the insect was started for human food and animal feed. Behaviour control of this insect using natural repellents is promising both for grain protection and commercial cultivation. We analysed if natural products of plant origin, namely essential oils (EOs), could be used for this purpose. Behavioural tests were performed using EOs of six plants: thymus (Thymus vulgaris), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), spearmint (Mentha spicata),

Effect of essential oils on the antibacterial activity and technological properties of dark chocolate.

Salmonella outbreaks associated with chocolate consumption are periodically reported. To address this issue, essential oils (EOs) have been proposed to be effective against foodborne pathogens. In addition, EOs constituents appear to modify the lipid phase of the product, leading to an improvement in quality. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial potential of EOs from Thymus vulgaris EO (TvEO) and the combination of T. vulgaris and Cymbopogon citratus EO (TvCcEO) in dark chocolate against S. Typhimurium ATCC 14028, as well as their influence on the technological properties during s

Comparison of antifungal activity of essential oils of clove, lemongrass and thyme for natural preservation of dried apricots.

Currently, the majority of fresh apricots destined for the production of dried apricots undergo sulphur oxide fumigation before drying to protect the fruit against fungal spoilage. To eliminate the use of sulphite, packaging assisted with essential oil is a promising strategy to increase shelf-life of dried apricots since it does not impact its flavor characteristics. In this study, three essential oils were selected: clove, lemongrass and thyme. They were screened for antifungal activity against Eurotium spp. with different methods: micro- and macro-dilution and agar-diffusion. Growth/no-grow
