BACKGROUND: Cystostomy, endoscopic realignment, and emergency anastomosis are three methods used to treat bulbous urethral injury (BUI). The aim of the study is to determine the optimal management.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 328 male patients with blunt straddle injury to the perineum. In total, 304 patients were included in the analysis due to strict criteria. Among these 304 patients, 197 had partial urethral disruption diagnosed, and 107 had complete urethral disruption. Group placement of the patients was based on the extent of injury. Each group was further divided i

We report a rare case of vesico-urethral foreign body with urinary fistula. On March 12, 2002, a 53-year-old single men inserted a 3 m vinyl tube 6 mm in diameter into his urethra by himself for the purpose of masturbation, but he could not remove the tube. He cut his urethra by himself and tried to remove the tube. The next day he was admitted to our hospital, with complaints of urinary fistula and fever. Open surgical removal of foreign body, cystostomy and repair of bulbous portion of the urethra were performed. At 24 days postoperatively the cystostomy and urethral catheter were removed an

Total urinary incontinence developed secondary to incompetence of the urethral closing mechanism in 8 spinal cord injury patients who were on Foley catheter drainage (5 patients) or suprapubic cystostomy (3 patients). All patients had irreparable urethrocutaneous fistulas and 4 had urethroperineal erosion. Closure of the bladder neck with drainage via a suprapubic cystostomy tube was used to divert the urinary stream. Bladder neck closure was successful in alleviating total urethral urinary incontinence in all patients. However, suprapubic abdominal leakage developed in 2 patients. This proced

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association1998eng
Contrast radiographic visualization of the small ruminant and porcine lower urinary tract is an infrequently used modality for the evaluation and management of obstructive urolithiasis. The administration of contrast medium through a tube cystostomy catheter used to divert urine flow until the resolution of the obstruction may provide an easy method to evaluate the status of the urethral obstruction. Contrast fluoroscopy is utilized to monitor and visualize therapeutic flushing of the urethra. A review of 26 patients seen at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital suggested that among the rad

OBJECTIVE: To place a suprapubic tube without using specialized instruments. Suprapubic cystostomy is a straightforward urological procedure, which nevertheless may become complicated if the equipment needed to perform the operation is unavailable. Nowadays, in most operating rooms, control of urological instruments has been taken away from a small cadre of dedicated urology nurses, and instead is delegated to a central sterilization department or is even outsourced, leading to an increased rate of instrument misplacement or breakage. Disposable kits are useful, but may not be stocked at all f

INTRODUCTION: Silicone Foley catheters tend to become stiffer as size of the catheter increases. Whereas the tip of a size 12 French silicone, Foley catheter is soft and flexible, a size 24 French silicone, Foley catheter is distinctly stiff. Chronically inflamed neuropathic bladders are susceptible to perforation by the tip of a Foley catheter. We report a patient with multiple sclerosis and moderately severe chronic cystitis, in whom a size 22 French Foley catheter burrowed through the dome of urinary bladder.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old, Caucasian male suffering from multiple sclerosi

PURPOSE: We review our initial cases of continent cystostomy to assess long-term functional results and complications after a minimum of 15 years of followup.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1976 and 1984, 23 continent cystostomies were performed on 15 boys and 8 girls with neuropathic bladders. Mean patient age at surgery was 8 years and 4 months (range 3 to 16) and mean followup was 20 years (range 15 to 23). The neurological lesions were due to 21 myelomeningocele (2 associated with an imperforated anus in 21 cases), spinal neuroblastoma in 1 and complex genitourinary malformation associate

Cystostomy catheterization of urinary bladder is the commonest method of choice in the treatment of patients with prostatic adenoma complicated by pronounced intercurrent pathology. To avoid the necessity of male urinals the technique of intraurethral splinting was used in 5 patients with nitinol spiral introduced in the prostatic part of the urethra. Therefore, the urination was normalized in three of them (one person had cystostomy catheter). The long-term observation evidenced of spiral stable position and step-by-step rehabilitation of detrusor function. There was a case of spiral incrusta

Peritonitis following suprapubic catheter placement may result from inadvertent placement of the drain through the large and small bowel and bladder base. The author describes a case of infectious peritonitis which developed after suprapubic catheter removal. The patient, underwent suprapubic catheter placement after Burch Colposuspension for genuine stress incontinence. The catheter was removed with a full bladder after an uneventful postoperative course, but the patient subsequently developed acute infectious peritonitis due to extravasated urine from the cystostomy site. It was concluded th

We present the case of a 21 years-old male who suffered major multiple injuries as the result of a mine explosion occurred on 19/09/23 in Armenia. They included shrapnel wounds involving the penile urethra, the bladder, the rectum, the anal canal and the upper and lower extremities and multiple fractures of the pelvis. Initially he underwent a stabilizing surgery at the field hospital; he was then transferred to the Astghik Medical Center where a new emergency surgery was performed with the creation of a lateral colostomy and the placement of a midline cystostomy drainage. On 08/10/23, the pat

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Acute abdomen after section cesarean (SC) is a case that can occur, and the diagnosis of the cause is very challenging. This case report describes the immediate diagnostic and management of unspecified abdominal pain on Day 13th post-SC, accompanied by complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old woman with a history of SC on the 13th day came to the Emergency Room (ER) with abdominal pain and decreased consciousness. Focused Assisted Sonography in Trauma (FAST) and Kidney Ureter Bladder (KUB) X-ray as a diagnostic tool was performed, followed by laparotomy as

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Laparoscopic ureteroneocystostomy with a vesicopsoas hitch has the advantages of a minimally invasive approach. The standardization and description of the technique are the main objectives of this video. We described this procedure in 10 steps, which could help to understand and perform this procedure.
METHODS: This video presents an approach to laparoscopic ureteroneocystostomy with a vesicopsoas hitch, which was clearly divided into 10 steps. The local institutional review board was consulted and ruled that approval was not required for this video article because the video

A total of 61 patients with lower urinary tract injuries were treated at Nara Medical University and its affiliated hospitals, between January 1985 and June 1995. There were 9 patients with bladder injuries and 52 patients with urethral injuries. The main cause of bladder injury was a traffic accident sustained in 4 patients (44.5%) and that of urethral injury was an occupational accident sustained in 27 cases (51.9%). The major associated injuries were a bone fracture seen in 45 patients (73.8%) and an intrascrotal hematoma seen in 28 patients (45.9%). Posterior urethral injuries associated w

The axillofemoral bypass graft, an extra-anatomic graft, connects the axillary artery to the femoral artery and is used in the treatment of significant aortoiliac occlusive disease in poor-risk patients. A common indication for axillofemoral bypass is a "hostile abdomen" (postoperative adhesions, neoplasms or radiation). Less frequent indications are aortic mycotic aneurysm, infected aortobifemoral bypass graft, aortoduodenal fistula, inflammatory aneurysm and extensive retroperitoneal fibrosis. Spinal cord injured patients with peripheral arterial disease have two problems: 1) lack of premoni

OBJECTIVE: Owing to the immature pelvis and the relative intra-abdominal position of the child's bladder, children with a posterior urethral injury differ from adults. We report our experience in the management of such injuries in male children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Children with suspected urethral injury underwent retrograde urethrography once their clinical condition was stable. Children with complete urethral injury underwent primary urethral realignment either endoscopically or by open surgical technique. Suprapubic cystostomy was performed in other children who were unfit to undergo pri

Endoscopic cystocysternostomy or cystoventriculostomy is the treatment of choice in patients with symptomatic intracranial arachnoid cysts. There are no objective diagnostic tests for reliable intraoperative evaluation of the effectiveness of performed stomies. The aim of this prospective open-label study is to demonstrate for the first time the usefulness of intraoperative cysternography performed with the low-field 0.15-T magnetic resonance imager Polestar N20 during endoscopic cysternostomies. The study was performed in patients operated for middle fossa arachnoid cysts (n = 10), suprasella

PURPOSE: We retrospectively reviewed the results of 3 types of initial management of pelvic fracture urethral disruption in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1980 to 1994, 35 boys 2 to 15 years old (mean age 8.1) with prostatomembranous urethral disruption were treated, including 17 who also had associated injuries. Immediate treatment included suprapubic cystostomy and delayed urethroplasty in 19 patients (group 1), urethral catheter alignment without traction and concomitant suprapubic cystostomy in 10 (group 2), and primary retropubic anastomotic urethroplasty in 6 (group 3).

INTRODUCTION: Phalloplasty in transgender men is frequently complicated by a neourethral stricture, precluding standard transurethral access for bladder tumor resection. We describe the first reported case of a transcystostomal bladder tumor resection in a transgender man after a radial forearm free flap (RFFF) phalloplasty.
MATERIALS AND SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: A 65-year-old transgender man, 23 years after an RFFF phalloplasty, presented with gross hematuria and a 15-mm posterior bladder tumor. A 7.95 Fr flexible ureteroscope reached the bladder but with markedly limited maneuverability. A two-s

Foreign bodies in the lower urinary system are relatively uncommon. The foreign body can cause significant discomfort, hematuria, or infection of the urinary system. Diagnosis is usually made by clinical examination and pelvic X-ray. The case we present is interesting in that the foreign body, that is the wire, coiled and made a knot within the bladder. We report a case of a 25-year-old male who presented with a history of dysuria after the insertion of a foreign body into the urethra. Examination showed a wire protruding from the urethra with no bleeding or discharge. X-ray showed a wire from
